You may have heard the buzz that you should be using red light therapy in your skincare routine. But is it really worth the hype? Does it really work?? Let’s dive in so you can determine if it’s something that you want to add to your routine…
What is Red Light Therapy?
Red light therapy is a treatment used in skincare that stimulates cellular activity to help regenerate and heal the skin. They can be used in wands, masks, or boxes. You can use them with an aesthetician, dermatologist, or in the comfort of your own home.
What are the Pros of Red Light Therapy?
There are a lot of pros of red light therapy! Here are just some of the possible benefits of incorporating this into your skincare routine:
- It can increase blood flow.
- It can help reduce inflammation.
- It can help reduce acne.
- It can help reduce scarring.
- It can help reduce wrinkles.
- It can help reduce the appearance of pigmentation.

What are the Cons of Red Light Therapy?
As with anything, there can be some cons with using red light therapy:
- The light can damage your eyes if not used properly.
- It can cause irritation on sensitive skin.
- It can be an investment purchasing a red light therapy unit.
You need to weigh the pros and cons to see if it’s worth it for you.
How to Prep Your Skin
The best way to prep the skin for red light therapy is to wash your face. The double cleansing method is best so your skin is extra clean. Use an oil cleanser first to remove makeup, dirt, sweat, oil, and dust. Then do a second cleanse with a gel cleanser to truly clean your face.
Once your skin is clean, use the red light therapy unit as directed.
Once your time with the light is complete, finish your skincare routine with your toner, serum, eye cream, and moisturizer.
Where Do You Add it Into Your Skincare Routine?
The best place to add red light therapy into your skincare routine is after cleansing. This allows the light to penetrate clean skin. You can finish the rest of your skincare routine after your time with the light.
What is the Best Red Light Therapy Device?
There are several different kinds of red lights units on the market. There are wands, masks, and boxes. It really depends on your budget and on your preference.
