The Ultimate Guide to Finding Your Perfect Cleanser

There are so many facial cleansers on the market. How do you know which cleanser is the right one for your skin type? Let’s break it down so you can find your perfect cleanser for your skin!

How to Find the Right Cleanser for Your Skin Type

In general, oil cleansers are good for dry to normal skin types. Gel cleansers are good for oily to normal skin types. Here’s a quick cheat sheet of what type of cleanser is good for your skin type:

  • Dry skin- oil cleanser
  • Oily skin- gel cleanser
  • Normal skin- oil or gel cleansers
  • Combo skin- oil or gel cleansers

Oil vs Purifying Cleanser

What is the difference between an oil cleanser versus a purifying gel cleanser? An oil cleanser is more gentle on the skin and is extremely hydrating. A gel cleanser is more drying on the skin but still does a great job at refreshing and refining your pores.

My all time favorite oil cleanser that personally use and recommend to all my clients is the Arbequina Cleansing Oil. And my favorite gel cleanser that I personally use and recommend to all my clients is the Purifying Cleansing Gel. Why are they so good? They meet EU standards, contain no added water, and are soothing and effective for truly cleaning the face without striping it.

How do you use an oil cleanser?

An oil cleanser works best with dry hands and a dry face. It is also a great makeup remover! Put a few squirts of the oil cleanser into the palm of your hand and rub your dry hands together. Apply the oil cleanser onto your face and rub it into your skin. It will feel silky smooth.

If you have never used an oil cleanser before, it may feel weird at first. It doesn’t suds up at all and it feels kinda greasy. But the oil acts as a great hydrating makeup remover and cleans your face really well. It’s key to use warm water AND a clean washcloth to remove the cleanser. If you don’t use a cloth, the the oil will remain on your face and your skin will still feel greasy.

How do you use a gel cleanser?

A gel cleanser works best with a little water. Put a few squirts into the palm of your hands, add a little water, and rub your hands together to get some good suds. Then wash your face with warm water and a clean washcloth.

Is Double Cleansing Worth It?

You may have heard the benefits of washing your hair with shampoo twice. The first wash gets rid of the product buildup and oils and the second wash really washes the hair. The same is true for your face! The first cleanse gets rid of the sweat, oil, grim, makeup, and pollutants and the second cleanse truly cleans your face.

I think the best combo for most skin types is to use an oil cleanser as your first cleanse and then a gel cleanser for your second cleanse. It’s the perfect combination of hydrating and purifying. This combo works great on all skin types because using the two different cleansers is the perfect mix of hydrating and purifying.
