Acne in your 40s? What exactly is Hormonal Acne?

It really isn’t fair. Acne in your 40s!! We’ve been there, done that! Why do we have to go through it again?! Let’s unpack what hormonal acne is and how we can combat it so our skin is healthy and happy in our 40s and beyond!

What is Hormonal Acne?

Hormonal acne occurs when our hormones are fluctuating in our bodies. Those fluctuating hormones increase testosterone levels and this can result in more sebum (oil) production, clogged pores, and blemishes.

What Causes Hormonal Acne?

When we’re in our 40s, we’re getting close to menopause and our bodies transition into perimenopause. During this period, our estrogen and progesterone levels decline. We might notice changes in our mood, an irregular period, a heavier or lighter period, or hot flashes.

With all these changes going on in our body, our skin will respond differently and it can cause hormonal acne or more blemishes than you’re used to.

How Can You Combat Hormonal Acne?

It can be really frustrating watching your skin go through a crazy cycle! Here are some tips to help combat hormonal acne so your skin is happy:

  • Get your hormones checked and learn how to manage them. Get your body healthy on the inside and it will show on the outside! (check out my post about how Mixhers has helped me!)
  • Eat a balanced diet. Incorporate whole foods and avoid processed foods, sugary foods, sugary drinks, and caffeine.
  • Change your pillowcase and towel often.
  • Use gentle skincare.

What Skincare Should You Use for Hormonal Acne in Your 40s?

It’s important to have a simple and consistent skincare routine as you battle hormonal acne. Use gentle skincare products that aren’t too harsh and abrasive for the skin. Avoid products that contain actives like prescription retinols and vitamin c until your skin is calm again. Maintain a simple skincare routine of double cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. Do a blemish mask weekly to give your skin extra TLC.

Also, consider using skincare that has hemp extract in it. This can be really soothing and calming for the skin.

  • Gel cleanser (2nd cleanse)
  • Toner
  • Mask (once a week)
