How to Use Eyeliner to Enhance Your Eyes
With makeup, there are no rules. But as a makeup artist, I will tell you that there are better ways to apply makeup so that you look your best and most flattering. When it comes to eyeliner, there are some women that have passionate opinions! There are some women that have been lining their eyes the same way for DECADES! I think one of the quickest ways to age yourself is to fully line your eye with black liner. Not flattering. It’s dark and heavy. And the women who do that will tell you that they feel naked without their liner on. Of course they do! They’ve been wearing a black line all around their eyes for years and they don’t feel like themselves if they don’t have it. But, there is a better way! You can still wear liner without it looking so bold.
How can you apply liner to help enhance your eyes?? Here’s how I think is a flattering way to wear it at any age, especially for women over 40:
- Whatever type of liner you choose to use, follow the lower lash line and continue the line up.
- Then connect the line to your upper lashes.
- Focus only on the outer 1/3 of your lash line.
- Line the 1/3 of your lower lash line too.
- Take an eyeliner brush and smudge the line so it’s soft. This will allow you to smear any mistakes you make.
Below are some eyeliner tutorials and tips to help you master the lined look! As with everything, practice makes perfect! Play around with it and see what technique and products you like best.
Colored Eyeliner
Is it ok to wear colored liner? Yes! Wearing colored eyeliner other than black can do two things: it can bring out your eye color and it can soften your eye. What are some liner colors that you can wear?
- Blue
- Purple
- Charcoal
- Brown
- Green
It might seem really bold to wear blue, purple, or green, but when paired with the right eyeshadow, applied correctly, and worn with the right eye color, it can really brighten your eyes!
Best Eyeliners
What are the best eyeliners to use?? It really is a matter of preference and budget. If you want bold, go for liquid liner. But you must have a steady hand and good eyes so your line is perfect! If you want waterproof, go for a waterproof pencil. If you want soft, then use an eyeshadow (powder) as your liner. You can turn any eyeshadow into eyeliner by spraying an eyeliner brush with setting spray. Your options are endless!
