Do you struggle with hyperpigmentation? You’re not alone! So many women have a little to a lot of discoloration on their skin and it can be frustrating and cause us to be self conscious. But have no fear! There are ways to combat it and get your skin looking and feeling amazing again!
What is hyperpigmentation?
It’s a big word…I know. So what exactly does it mean? Hyperpigmentation is basically discoloration of the skin. Hyper means to have more of something. So when you have hyperpigmentation on your skin, you have more pigment, meaning darker spots.
Hyperpigmentation can come in different forms: age spots, sun spots, melasma (aka pregnancy mask), and even freckles. Sometimes those spots aren’t noticeable to anyone other than ourselves. We’re our own worst critics! But sometimes those spots can be distracting and can cause ourselves to be self conscious and have a lack of confidence.
Can olive oil directly reduce hyperpigmentation?
Olive oil isn’t really known to help reduce signs of hyperpigmentation. But it can prevent sun damage, can prevent the signs of aging, and it has other health benefits for the skin.
How does olive oil benefit the skin?
Olive oil has been proven to help with the following:
- Provide hydration to the skin
- Neutralize free radicals so your skin ages better
- Encourages new cell growth and exfoliates the skin
- Can treat some skin rashes with its antifungal, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties
How can you treat hyperpigmentation?
Although olive oil doesn’t usually treat hyperpigmentation, olive leaf elixir contains a powerful ingredient called hydroxytyrosol and is one of the most powerful antioxidant compounds. It can help reduce inflammation, acne, redness, dark circles, fine lines & wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation.
Skincare products that have hydroxytyrosol in their ingredients can help reduce the signs of hyperpigmentation. Great skincare options for hyperpigmentation and discoloration are: retinols, vitamin c, and chemical exfoliators. When you combine hydroxytyrosol into those products, you’ve got a killer combination!
Here are some skincare products that are fabulous for hyperpigmentation:
- F87 CORRECTIVE KAHAI ELIXIR is great for all skin types and is known for giving the skin luminosity, finer pores, hydration, elasticity, firmness, and anti-pigmentation. Contains 3.8% Kahai Oil and contains the highest amount of retinol out of these products. (This is my personal favorite retinol!)
- F82 GREEN RETINOL FACE ELIXIR combines Hydroxytyrosol with Green Retinol (Bakuchiol = alternative retinol) and Vitamin A rich Kahai Oil. The Bakuchiol remedies fine lines and reduces the appearance of pores, while the Hydroytyrosol, together with the Kahai Oil, minimizes redness, counteracts pigmentation and protects against oxidative damage. Bakuchiol also stimulates collagen formation, actively counteracting skin aging. It contains 2.5% Bakuchiol + 1% Kahai Oil and is the gentlest form of retinol out of these options. (This option is best for sensitive skin.)
- F65 CORRECTIVE MIDNIGHT ELIXIR is combines retinol (fish sourced), arbequina and kahai oil with the patented “hyaluron in oil complex” and the regenerating super olive tree antioxidant hydroxytyrosol. This regenerates and tightens the skin overnight, reduces wrinkles and enhances the luminosity of the skin while you sleep. Apply this retinol at night only because it is photosensitive. This contains 2% retinol from fish liver + hyaluron + 2.5% Kahai Oil.
- F81 AHA + HT Serum Face This is a chemical exfoiliator and it has glycolic acid & lactic acid to help exfoliate the skin’s surface and help promote cell turnover. This is a chemical exfoliant that helps dissolve and loosen the bonds between dead skin cells and oils to help you achieve radiant and smooth skin.
- F83 HT + Vitamin C Serum has 1300% increased antioxidant power to simple vitamin C. Not only does it neutralize free radicals on the upper layer of the skin to prevent the effects of ozone damage on the skin but it also helps brighten the skin, reducing the signs of hyperpigmentation.

But how do you use these products? Let me break it down for you:
- Vitamin C- After rinsing your face in the morning and applying toner, apply about 4 drops of the Vitamin C serum onto your face. Rub it in evenly to your skin and let it soak and absorb into your skin for a good 5-10 minutes. Then you can proceed with your eye cream and moisturizer.
- Retinol- This is best applied at night. After cleansing and toning, you can apply 3-4 drops of retinol to your face alone or add it to your serum. Evenly rub it into your skin and follow up with your eye cream and moisturizer. Start by using this once a week and build it up using it more often. Every other day is great.
- AHA Chemical Exfoliator- This is an amazing product but too much of it can really wreck your skin barrier. Only use it once a week at first and build up to using it 1-3 times a week. This is a serum so you apply it after cleansing and toning your face. Apply about 4 drops on your face and evenly rub it into your skin. Follow up with your eye cream and moisturizer. It’s best to use this at night, on the days you do not use retinol.
