If you want to build an intentional closet and invest in high quality clothes, then you need to learn how to make them last! After spending the money on clothes that you want to be timeless and have for years, you don’t want to ruin them. So here’s how to get your clothes to last longer so you’ll be able to love them for years!
Don’t Wash Your Clothes Often
I know, I know! This may sound really gross, but trust me, it’s not! You do not need to wash your clothes after every wear. You don’t. Yes, please wash your underwear and socks after every use. But your shirts, pants, sweaters, dresses, jackets, and other pieces of clothing do not need to be washed every time you wear them. You only need to wash them if they are dirty, smelly, stained, or stretched out. Otherwise, keep wearing them!
Hang Dry Your Clothes
I’ve lived in New Zealand and Italy and have traveled all over the world. Dryers are hard to come by. Sometimes it can be really inconvenient, but my clothes are happier when I hang dry them! Using a dryer wears down your clothing quicker. It breaks the fabric down. If you hang dry your clothes, it will increase their lifespan and won’t be as hard on them.
Don’t Hang Your Sweaters
If you have sweaters in your closet, don’t hang them. Hanging them on hangers will stretch them out. So instead, nicely fold them and keep them in a drawer or box or shelf. This will ensure that your sweaters will last longer!
Wear an apron
When you’re in the kitchen, wear an apron! You don’t want oil splashes and sauces to stain your nice clothing. An apron will protect your clothing and keep them clean.
Wear Clothes for Appropriate Activities
If you know you’re going to be doing an outdoor activity like hiking, then it’s best that you don’t wear your expensive suede booties and sleek leather jacket. Be smart and wear clothes that are appropriate for the activity you’ll be doing. Save your exercise wear for exercise and your fancy pieces for nights out. Be smart about it.
By just taking a few steps and making a few changes, you can get your clothes to have a longer lifespan. Take good care of them and they will work long and hard for you!
