5 Skincare Habits to Start

There are lots of skincare tips and tricks out there. But it can get so overwhelming knowing what to try and what to buy. Here are 5 skincare habits to start this year that will help you get healthier, happier, and glowier skin!

  • Establish a Daily Skincare Routine
  • Do Facial Massage with Gua Sha
  • Get Healthy Skin with Red Light Therapy
  • Achieve Smoother Skin by Exfoliating
  • Drink More Water

Establish a Daily Skincare Routine

It is crucial to have a daily skincare routine that you do consistently if you want to have healthy skin. You can start with a basic nightly routine or jump into a more involved skincare routine to achieve glass skin. Whatever you decide is best for your level or experience, patience, and time, the important thing is to stick to it!! Commit to doing your skincare routine EVERY NIGHT! Never go to bed without washing your face from this day forward. You can do it!!

If you want to start really simple, then stick to these steps:

  • Cleanse (first and second cleanse)
  • Tone
  • Moisturize

That’s it! When you keep things simple, you’re more likely to do it! Following those simple steps will help you have healthy and happy skin.

Basic Nightly Skincare Routine

Cleanse

After a full day of makeup-wearing, the first thing you want to do in your nightly skincare routine is remove your makeup or the other buildup! You want a fresh face to clean. Just like a hair stylist will tell you that it’s important to wash your hair twice each time you wash your hair, as an aesthetician I’m telling you that you need to double cleanse your face. The first cleanse will remove the makeup and buildup and the second cleanse will really clean your face.

For your first cleanse, use an oil cleanser to wash your face. An oil cleanser will help remove your makeup and clean your pores. Rub in circular motions making sure to clean the nooks and crannies of your face. Be gentle but thorough. Remove the cleanser and your product buildup with a clean microfiber cloth (use a new one each day!).

Next, cleanse your face again! You can use the same oil cleanser or you can use a gel cleanser. Gently rub the cleanser into your face and rinse with the microfiber cloth.

Tone

This step is often neglected in the skin care routine, but it shouldn’t be! Toning helps restore your skin’s natural pH level, reduces redness, refreshes, and acts as a second cleansing process.

There are 3 ways you can apply toner:

  • Spritz your face directly with toner and let it air dry.
  • Take a cotton pad and spray it a few times with your toner. Then gently rub your face with the cotton pad, making sure to get your whole face.
  • Spray your hands with toner and pat it onto your face.

Moisturize

This step is so refreshing! Take a moisturizer and apply it to your face. Dab some of the product all over your face and rub it in thoroughly. Make sure to be gentle under your eyes because this skin is very sensitive.

Do Facial Massage with Gua Sha

Another step you can incorporate into your skincare routine this year is gua sha facial massage! Gua Sha is an ancient and traditional Chinese skin care practice that helps circulate blood flow, detoxify through lymphatic drainage, reduce puffiness and fine lines, and sculpts the face.

As we age, our skin changes. We get more wrinkles, puffiness, and excess skin. Gua sha facial massages can help eliminate those signs of aging when done consistently.

I like to use an oil cleanser in the morning to help the gua sha tool easily glide over my skin. Then I rinse my face with warm water and a wash cloth. It feels so good and it helps depuff my face from a night of sleep!

There are many benefits to using Gua Sha consistently and carefully. Gua Sha:

  • Relieves pressure and tension in your face, much like yoga helps your body relax.
  • Helps circulate blood flow.
  • Detoxifies through lymphatic drainage.
  • Reduces puffiness and fine lines.
  • Sculpts your face.

Gua Sha Benefits

There are a lot of Gua Sha tools on the market! Some are made from rose quartz, some are made from other stones, some are made from metal. I think the Wildling Gua Sha tools are perfect to add into your daily skin care routine. Their quality is top notch and they have created an extensive library of tutorials to learn from on YouTube. I use the Empress Stone every morning as part of my skincare routine. My face feels fresh and relaxed. I especially love using the tool to sculpt my jaw to reduce jowls along my jawline.

Get Healthy Skin with Red Light Therapy

Red light therapy is a skincare tool that is rising in popularity. Women are loving the benefits they’re seeing. Some of the benefits of red light therapy include:

  • It can reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • It can reduce the signs of hyperpigmentation
  • It can promote healthier, younger-looking skin
  • It can decrease puffiness and inflammation
  • It can increase firmness
  • It can increase blood flow

Use a red light mask, wand, or device daily for about 10 minutes to see results. It’s a great thing to pop on and read a book or relax while you give your skin a little extra TLC.

Achieve Smoother Skin by Exfoliating

This step is my favorite because you see and feel instant results! Over time, our skin builds up product, skin, and elements that adds texture to our skin. It’s important to exfoliate 1-2 times a week to help slough off the dead skin cells to help cell turnover and to achieve healthy skin.

Here are some benefits from exfoliating regularly:

  • It removes dead skin cells.
  • It improves the efficacy of other skincare products like serums, oils, and moisturizers.
  • It evens out your skin tone.
  • It helps unclog pores.
  • It stimulates blood flow.
  • It improves collagen production.

There are several types of exfoliators: physical, enzyme, and chemical.

  • physical exfoliator has granules that physically scrub your skin’s surface.
  • An enzyme exfoliator focuses on the top layers of the epidermis. Enzymes can boost your skin’s natural ability to break down skin cells.
  • chemical exfoliator goes beyond the top layers of the skin and uses chemicals like AHAs (alpha-hydroxy acids) or BHAs (beta hydroxy acids) to help dissolve and loosen the bonds between dead skin cells and oils.

Drink More Water

And the easiest and cheapest option of all is to drink more water! Hydrating your body helps your skin too! Drinking at least 8 cups of water daily will help hydrate your skin and make it look soft and supple. Keep a water bottle nearby to help remind you to drink, drink, drink!

These are simple but powerful steps to help you achieve glowing skin all year long. Need other ways to help boost your confidence? Read my book Meant for More! Or see what other services I offer as a beauty coach. I want you to feel and look good so you can do good!
