Let me tell you about the time I showed up to a beautiful rooftop dinner in Positano wearing the same linen dress I had been sightseeing in all day. Was it ideal? No. Was it still a great outfit because I had packed intentionally and that dress could genuinely do both? Yes. And that is the entire philosophy behind this post.

After traveling to over 40 countries and spending years living in Italy and New Zealand, I’ve learned exactly what works and what absolutely does not when it comes to packing clothes for a trip. I’ve sweated through the wrong fabrics in the wrong heat. I’ve limped through ancient cobblestone streets in adorable but completely impractical shoes. I’ve checked bags full of outfits I never wore and come home wishing I had packed half as much and twice as intentionally.

So here it is…my complete guide to the best travel outfits for women over 40, organized by travel scenario so you know exactly what to wear for every moment of your trip. We’re talking airport outfits, sightseeing looks, dinner outfits, beach and resort days, active adventure days, and even a working-while-traveling outfit for all my fellow women who never fully unplug.

Every outfit formula is practical, polished, and packable. Every piece earns its spot in your carry-on. And all my actual product favorites are linked throughout because I know you are going to ask anyway. Let’s get into it!

How to Build the Perfect Travel Wardrobe for Women Over 40

Here’s what I want you to remember as you start pulling things out of your closet and wondering what actually makes the cut: the best travel outfit is the one you feel amazing in and can wear more than once. Period.

The best travel outfits for women over 40 are not about packing more. They’re about packing smarter…choosing pieces that do double duty, fabrics that actually behave in heat and humidity, and shoes you could wear all day without thinking about them. When your outfits work that hard for you, traveling becomes effortless. And effortless is exactly how travel should feel.

I’ve linked everything I recommend in the shop section below…all my Quince favorites, my WoolX pieces (use code JOELLEN10 for 10% off), my Sapahn bags (use code JOELLEN15 for 15% off), and my full Amazon and LTK storefronts. Everything you see me wearing in my travel content lives in one of those places.

And if you want to see how all of these pieces actually pack into a carry-on…I’ve linked my full Europe packing video and my outfit capsule video below. Because seeing it is always more helpful than reading it.

Pack light. Dress intentionally. Show up fully. You were made for this kind of beautiful.

The Golden Rules of Packing Outfits for Women Over 40

After over 40 countries and four years living abroad, here are the packing rules I genuinely live by:

  • Every piece needs to work with at least three other things in your bag. If it only goes with one outfit, leave it home.
  • Quality beats quantity every single time. One beautiful linen dress you feel amazing in is worth more than five mediocre pieces you feel okay in.
  • Comfort is non-negotiable. If you wouldn’t walk five miles in it at home, you will not magically want to walk five miles in it in Florence. Pack things you can actually move in.
  • Wrinkle-resistant fabrics are your best friends. Linen, merino wool, and jersey knits travel beautifully. Silk and cotton poplin do not.
  • Shoes deserve as much thought as clothes. Two great pairs will take you further than five okay pairs. Pack accordingly.

And the rule I wish someone had told me before my first trip to Italy: pack half of what you think you need. You will still have too much. And you’ll thank yourself every single time you have to carry it up a flight of stairs.

The Best Fabrics for Travel — What to Look For and What to Avoid

Fabric choice is everything when you’re traveling, especially in hot weather. Here’s my honest breakdown:

✅ PACK THESE:

  • Linen: breathable, beautiful, gets better with wear. My number one travel fabric for hot weather destinations.
  • Merino wool: sounds counterintuitive but merino regulates temperature, resists odor, and packs down tiny. I love WoolX for this. Use code JOELLEN10 for 10% off! [add WoolX link]
  • Cotton jersey: comfortable, packable, and works for everything from sightseeing to casual dinners.
  • Bamboo blends: lightweight, breathable, and incredibly soft against skin.

❌ LEAVE THESE HOME:

  • Heavy denim: it doesn’t breathe, it doesn’t pack small, and it takes forever to dry. Hard pass.
  • Thick polyester: you’ll sweat in ways you didn’t know were possible.
  • Anything that wrinkles at the thought of being folded…silk charmeuse, cotton poplin, stiff blazers. Not worth the stress.
  • Anything that only works in one outfit…see golden rules above.

The Quince linen pieces are some of my absolute favorites for travel…quality feels, beautiful look, and incredibly affordable.

The Airport Outfit — Comfortable, Pulled Together, and TSA Ready

Can we talk about the airport outfit for a second? Because I’ve seen women show up to the airport in full pajamas and I’ve seen women show up in heels and a blazer and neither extreme is serving anyone.

The goal of the airport outfit is this: comfortable enough to sleep in on a long flight, put together enough to feel like yourself when you land, and easy enough to get through security without doing a full costume change at the conveyor belt. It’s a very specific brief and once you nail it, travel days become so much more enjoyable.

After years of long-haul flights…including some with four kids in tow…here’s exactly what I reach for every single time.

The Airport Outfit Formula

The formula that never fails me:

  • One comfortable base layer: a soft tee, a fitted tank, or a lightweight long-sleeve depending on the season. Something you could sleep in but would not be embarrassed to be photographed in.
  • One easy bottom: wide leg pants, joggers that look polished, or a comfortable maxi skirt. Nothing tight or restrictive. You’ll thank yourself at hour six.
  • One layer: a cardigan, denim jacket, or lightweight zip. Planes are cold. Always.
  • A crossbody bag or tote that fits under the seat: your personal item should be organized enough that you can find your passport, earbuds, and snacks without unpacking the whole thing at security.

My airport outfit staples:

Travel Outfit

The Best Travel Shoes for the Airport

Slip-ons. Or easy to put on and take off. This is not negotiable.

You’ll thank me when you are at security and the woman in front of you is untying knee-high lace-up boots while the line backs up behind her. Slip-on sneakers or loafers that look put together and feel like clouds are a great airport shoe. Make sure they are shoes you can actually walk long distances in…airport terminals are deceptively large and delays are always possible.

The Sightseeing Outfit — Look Good on Your Feet All Day

Sightseeing days are where most packing lists fall apart. You think you want to look cute and you pack something that looks great for the first twenty minutes and then reality hits…the heat, the walking, the cobblestones, the four-hour museum, the spontaneous lunch at a café you weren’t planning for…and suddenly that outfit that looked adorable in your hotel mirror is working very hard against you.

I’ve been there. I wore the wrong shoes to the Vatican once and it wasn’t fun.

The perfect sightseeing outfit for women over 40 is comfortable enough to walk for hours, polished enough to pop into a café or a church without feeling underdressed, and simple enough that it doesn’t require constant adjusting. Here is the formula.

The Sightseeing Outfit Formula

The formula I use for every sightseeing day:

  • A lightweight dress or linen trousers + a simple top: this combination is endlessly versatile, looks polished without trying, and transitions from morning sightseeing to afternoon gelato to evening aperitivo without skipping a beat.
  • A scarf or sarong in your bag: for church visits, an unexpected beach, or just adding a layer of style to a simple outfit. It weighs almost nothing and does five jobs.
  • A crossbody bag: hands free, secure, and stylish. Essential.
  • SPF and a lip with some color: because looking polished on a sightseeing day is more about skin and a little makeup than anything else.

My sightseeing day staples:

Sightseeing Travel Outfit

Sightseeing Travel Outfit

Sightseeing Shoes — The Most Important Decision You Will Make

I’ll say this once and then I’ll say it again because it needs to be said twice: your sightseeing shoes will make or break your trip.

I’ve walked the streets of Rome, Florence, Venice, Athens, and dozens of other cities on ancient, uneven, cobblestone surfaces that are beautiful and absolutely ruthless on your feet. I lived in Italy for two years. I know things.

Here’s what you actually need for sightseeing: leather walking sandals with arch support for warm weather destinations, comfortable supportive sneakers for longer days and cooler climates, and enough sense to leave the cute-but-painful options at home.

Invest in a great pair of leather sandals. They’ll look beautiful, feel good, and go with everything in your bag. It is one of the best travel purchases you will ever make.

My sightseeing shoe picks:

The Travel Dinner Outfit — Polished Without Overpacking

Dinner outfits are where I see women overpack the most. They bring three different dresses “just for evenings” and then wear the same maxi dress they wore for sightseeing to every dinner anyway because it looked great and felt comfortable and honestly nobody at that rooftop restaurant in Florence was judging.

True story. I did this. Zero regrets.

The key to the perfect travel dinner outfit isn’t having a separate “dinner wardrobe”…it’s choosing pieces during the day that transition beautifully to evening with minimal effort. A good accessory, a good bag, and a lip color change can take a linen dress from a morning museum to a candlelit dinner without a single outfit change. That is the goal.

The Travel Dinner Outfit Formula

The travel dinner outfit formula is simpler than you think:

  • One elevated piece that transitions from day to evening: a maxi dress, a wrap dress, or a silk-blend top with linen trousers. Something that looks intentionally dressed up even if you wore it all day.
  • Swap your day bag for something smaller and more evening-appropriate.
  • Add a little jewelry: one pair of earrings changes everything.
  • Do a quick lip refresh: a lip liner and gloss takes two minutes and immediately makes any outfit feel more done.
  • Flat dressy sandals: beautiful, Italian street-approved, and guaranteed to last the whole dinner without turning into a problem.

My dinner outfit favorites:

The Bag That Elevates Every Dinner Outfit

Here’s something I learned from two years of living in Italy: Italians notice your bag. And one quality leather bag will do more for your evening outfit than three mediocre ones ever could.

I’m a huge fan of Sapahn bags for travel. They’re beautiful, quality leather, the perfect size for an evening out, and the kind of bag that works with everything from a casual lunch to a candlelit dinner. They’re the kind of purchase you make once and use for years. And you can change the look of the bag by simply changing out the bag strap. Bring one purse but get 4 different bags! Save 15% with this discount code: JOELLEN15

A small leather crossbody or a simple clutch is all you need for an evening out…your phone, your card, your lip gloss, and your room key. Everything else can stay at the hotel.

Sapahn Favorites

The Beach and Resort Outfit — Effortless and Elegant

Beach days are some of my favorite days to dress for because the formula is genuinely simple and the margin for error is very small. You need a swimsuit that fits and flatters, a coverup that takes you from sand to street, sandals that can handle both, and a bag that can get sandy without you losing sleep over it.

That’s it. Four pieces. Maximum.

After years of beach days across multiple countries…the Amalfi Coast, Maui, Mexico, the Greek islands, New Zealand, and plenty of Arizona lakeside days closer to home…here’s the beach and resort outfit formula I always come back to.

The Beach Outfit Formula

The four-piece beach formula that works every time:

  • A swimsuit that makes you feel great: not the one you have been meaning to replace for three summers. The one that actually fits and makes you feel confident. For beach days abroad you will be living in your swimsuit so this matters.
  • A versatile coverup: a lightweight maxi dress, a linen button-down, or a sarong that works as both a coverup and a wrap. Ideally something that looks cute enough to walk into a beachside café without feeling like you forgot to get dressed.
  • Comfortable flat sandals: nothing you love too much to get sandy.
  • A beach bag: a tote or a straw bag that holds your sunscreen, your book, your water bottle, and your smaller crossbody for when you leave the beach and need to transition.

My beach outfit favorites:

Beach Outfit

Beach to Lunch — How to Transition Without Changing

The beach to lunch transition is one of the great art forms of vacation dressing and it is simpler than most women make it.

Throw your button-down or dress coverup over your swimsuit. Switch your beach sandals for your slightly nicer flat sandals if you have them. Tie your hair up or shake it out depending on how you feel. Add a pair of sunglasses and your crossbody bag. That’s it. You’re ready for lunch.

The trick is having a coverup that genuinely looks like an outfit rather than something you grabbed on the way off the beach. A beautiful white linen button-down worn open over a swimsuit with flat sandals looks completely intentional. A faded beach coverup does not. The investment in one beautiful coverup pays off every single beach day of the trip.

The Active Day Outfit — For Hiking, Walking Tours, and Adventure

Not every travel day is a leisurely stroll through a piazza. Some of them involve hiking to the top of Arizona’s highest peak at 12,633 feet. Some involve via ferrata courses on the side of a Swiss mountain. Some are long walking tours where you cover eight miles before lunch and wonder what you were thinking when you agreed to this.

I’ve done all of these things. Sometimes on the same trip. And what I wear on those days matters significantly more than what I wear on a lazy beach day.

Active travel days require clothing that actually performs…that moves with your body, regulates your temperature, dries quickly if you sweat, and does not fall apart on a mountainside. Here is exactly what I reach for.

The Active Day Outfit Formula

The formula for any active travel day:

  • A performance base layer: a sports bra and biker shorts, or a fitted athletic tee and leggings. Something that moves well, wicks moisture, and does not chafe over miles of terrain.
  • A lightweight layer for changing temperatures: if you’re hiking at elevation, temperatures drop fast. A packable quarter-zip or windbreaker that stuffs into your pack is worth every inch of bag space.
  • Performance socks: do not underestimate the power of a good sock on a long hiking day.
  • The right shoes for the activity: more on that below.

I am obsessed with WoolX for active travel days. Merino wool sounds like the last thing you’d want to work out in but it is genuinely the most temperature-regulating, odor-resistant, comfortable activewear I have found. The sports bra and biker shorts are my go-to for hiking days. Use code JOELLEN10 for 10% off!

My active day favorites:

Active Day Outfit

The Best Shoes for Active Travel Days

The shoes you wear on an active travel day can genuinely make or break the experience. I learned this hiking Mt. Humphreys in Arizona…at 12,633 feet the terrain is rocky, uneven, and absolutely unforgiving. And when I was in Switzerland doing a via ferrata course on the side of a mountain, I was incredibly grateful I had packed proper shoes.

For active travel days you need genuine support. Not fashion sneakers dressed up as athletic shoes. Real support, real grip, real protection.

Trail running shoes or light hiking shoes are ideal for most active travel scenarios…they handle everything from long walking tours on uneven city streets to actual trail hiking without requiring you to pack an additional pair of dedicated hiking boots.

If you’re doing serious hiking with elevation gain, consider packing actual hiking boots or trail shoes with ankle support. Your knees will thank you at the end of the day.

These are the hiking shoes I have and love!

Packing for a trip is exciting…until you realize you’ve forgotten your toothbrush, face wash, or your favorite moisturizer.

After traveling to more than 40 countries…and spending two years living in Italy and two years in New Zealand…I’ve learned that a well-packed toiletry bag can make every trip smoother. The goal isn’t to bring your entire bathroom with you. It’s to pack the essentials that help you feel clean, comfortable, and confident wherever you’re headed.

Whether you’re planning a weekend getaway, a beach vacation, or a three-week Europe adventure with only a carry-on, this travel toiletries checklist will help you pack smarter, stay organized, and avoid those expensive last-minute airport purchases. Let’s make sure you never forget the essentials again!

Why Every Woman Needs a Dedicated Travel Toiletry Bag

When I travel, I take a lot of pictures and videos to document all the memories. And I want to look good in that footage when I look back on it! So it’s crucial that I bring my favorite skincare and makeup products so I can look and feel my best, no matter where I am!

When you’re visiting somewhere new, it can be overwhelming. Having your favorite daily essentials keeps you calm and confident and feeling like yourself.

Daily Toiletry Essentials

There are just some essentials that you should not go without! Thankfully, if you happen to forget something, these simple essentials can be found most places around the world…maybe not the exact same as what you’re used to but you’ll definitely have your needs met. And learn to adapt! But here’s a checklist you can use to help you pack what you need!

  • toothbrush
  • toothpaste
  • floss
  • deodorant
  • razor
  • shampoo + conditioner
  • body wash

Skincare Essentials I Never Travel Without

As a licensed esthetician, I can’t NOT bring my favorite skincare products. I’ve done enough traveling and have sacrificed bringing my favorites in the past and my skin always suffers. But not anymore! As a woman over 40, my skincare is the most important thing I pack.

But instead of packing all my full size bottles, taking up too much space and weight, I put my favorites in smaller travel size containers. Here are my skincare travel essentials:

For a simple skin routine, you’ll definitely want to pack:

My Travel Makeup Essentials

There’s nothing worse than having some of your favorite makeup products break or spill in your luggage! It makes a mess and then you also can’t use it. I prefer traveling with cream makeup because it’s TSA approved, won’t spill, and you can bring it with you in your carry-on.

These are my preferred makeup products to travel as a makeup artist with because they’re easy to pack and help me look my best:

Or…you can make it super easy and use the one compact makeup system that is amazing!!

Haircare Essentials

Health & First Aid Essentials

Along with packing clothing, skincare, and makeup, there are some other essentials that you don’t want to forget when you’re traveling abroad! There’s nothing worse being in a foreign country and not having what you need when you need it! Here’s a list of things that are important to pack:

First Aid:

  • Bandaids
  • Neosporin
  • Moleskin
  • Bugspray
  • Bug bite ointment
  • Ace bandage
  • Mask
  • Rubber gloves

Medicine:

  • Anti-diarrea medicine
  • Pepto Bismol
  • Charcoal pills (this is so so good for upset tummies when you’re eating new foods)
  • Probiotics (this is also a life saver! I take this daily when I travel to help me digest things better and have a happy gut)
  • Zofran (I always have this on hand! I get a prescription from my doctor before we travel anywhere)
  • Antibiotics (I always have this on hand! I get a prescription from my doctor before we travel anywhere. I’ve been traveling when I needed it and had to go to the ER to get treatment. Always be prepared!)
  • Tylenol
  • Advil
  • NyQuil and DayQuil pills
  • Cough drops
  • Motion sickness medicine (Bonine, Dramamine, or Meclizine)

Laundry:

Some of these may seem overkill, but trust me. I packed all of these things and ended up using quite a few of them! And there have been times when I wish I had something and I didn’t.

Travel Bags:

The bags you pack matter!! You don’t want to be lugging suitcases through airports and streets that have weak wheels and cheap plastic. You want something reliable, comfortable, that holds a ton! Here are the bags I always travel with:

My Favorite Travel Bags

Toiletries That Save Space

The key to being able to pack all your favorite toiletries is to buy travel size containers or travel size products. Purchasing small containers (silicon, plastic, or glass) can help you pack more but not pack the bulk. Squeeze, pour, or dropper your favorite liquids, creams, serums, gels, lotions, oils, and shampoos into smaller jars so you don’t have to choose between your favorites! You don’t have to sacrifice for space.

My Favorite Travel Organization Tips

If you want to pack lightly, it’s key to have some great organizing items! Here are some things that just make life easier, keep your things safe and secure, and help keep your liquids from spilling:

Final Packing Checklist

You can use this packing checklist to cross things off as you pack so you don’t forget any of the essentials!

  • toothbrush
  • toothpaste
  • floss
  • deodorant
  • face wash
  • moisturizer
  • sunscreen
  • razor
  • hair brush
  • hair ties
  • shampoo + conditioner
  • body wash
  • medication
  • travel wipes
  • makeup

The Ultimate Travel Toiletries Checklist for Women (Carry-On Friendly)

FAQ

  • What toiletries should every woman pack for a trip? Every woman should pack daily hygiene items like a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, skincare products, makeup essentials, medications, and a small first-aid kit. I also recommend bringing SPF, lip balm, and a few travel-size beauty products you use every day.
  • Can I bring toiletries in my carry-on? Yes! Most airlines follow the 3-1-1 rule, meaning liquids, gels, and creams should be in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 mL) or smaller and fit inside one quart-sized clear bag. Check your airline’s guidelines before traveling.
  • How do I save space when packing toiletries? Use travel-size containers, refillable bottles, and products that serve multiple purposes. I also love keeping a dedicated travel toiletry bag packed year-round so I’m always ready for my next trip.
  • Should I pack full-size or travel-size skincare? For most trips, travel-size products are all you’ll need. They’re lighter, save valuable suitcase space, and are perfect for carry-on travel. If you’re traveling for several weeks, refillable containers let you bring your favorite products without packing bulky bottles.
  • What’s the best toiletry bag for travel? Look for one that’s lightweight, water-resistant, and has multiple compartments. I especially love hanging toiletry bags because they keep everything organized and make it easy to access products in small hotel bathrooms. Travel experts consistently recommend compartmentalized or hanging bags for convenience and organization.

Packing your toiletries doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Once you create a travel kit with your favorite essentials, getting ready for your next adventure becomes so much easier.

I’ve found that traveling light isn’t about packing less…it’s about packing intentionally. Bring the products you truly love, simplify your routine, and leave a little room in your suitcase for the memories (and maybe a few souvenirs!).

Whether you’re heading to Europe, the beach, or a weekend getaway, I hope this travel toiletries checklist helps you pack with confidence so you can spend less time worrying about what you forgot and more time enjoying the adventure ahead.

Italy is my happy place. I say that as someone who has visited over 40 countries and spent two years living there with my family. I know the way the light hits the Colosseum in the late afternoon. I know how it feels to wander through a Florentine market before the tourists arrive. I know the particular kind of beauty that exists on a Venetian canal at dusk, and the way an Amalfi cliff road makes your heart stop in the best possible way.

I also know exactly what happens when you show up in Italy in the wrong shoes. Packing for Italy is a skill. Not because Italy is complicated, but because it rewards the woman who arrives prepared and punishes the one who did not think through her footwear before boarding her flight. Italy is cobblestones and cathedrals and outdoor markets and candlelit dinners and scorching summer heat and the most stylish people you’ve ever walked past in your life. It’s a lot, and it’s glorious.

Knowing what to pack for Italy in summer as a woman over 40 means building a wardrobe that’s effortlessly chic, completely comfortable, and practical enough to take you from a morning at a museum to an afternoon gelato to an evening at a rooftop restaurant without a single outfit change you are not excited about. That’s what this guide is for.

I did Italy carry-on only as part of our three-week Europe trip, and everything I’m recommending here has been worn on actual Italian streets, through actual Italian heat, past actual Italians who very much noticed what everyone around them was wearing. Consider this your insider guide from someone who lived it. Let’s get on with what to pack for Italy in summer!

What to Know About Italy in Summer Before You Pack

Before you start pulling things out of your closet, there are a few things worth knowing about Italy in summer that will make every single packing decision easier. Italy is not a one-size-fits-all destination. The climate, terrain, culture, and fashion expectations vary enough that showing up unprepared is how women end up wilting in the wrong fabrics, limping in the wrong shoes, and turned away at the door of a church they’ve been dreaming of visiting for years.

Italy in summer is hot. Not Switzerland hot where you could escape to a cooler mountain elevation. Straight up Mediterranean, relentless, beautiful summer heat. Cities like Rome and Florence can feel like walking through an oven in July and August. Even the more temperate northern cities like Venice and Milan get pretty warm. Understanding the heat is the most important thing you can do before you know what to pack for Italy in summer.

The other thing to understand is Italian culture around fashion and appearance. Italians take how they look seriously. Looking put together is a sign of respect for yourself and the people around you. Showing up in sloppy tourist clothing won’t get you arrested, but it’ll make you stick out like a sore thumb. Even something as simple as choosing a linen dress over athletic shorts changes the entire experience of walking through a piazza.

And then there are the shoes. The cobblestone streets of Rome, Florence, Venice, and virtually every Italian village are ancient, uneven, and completely uninterested in your comfort. The wrong shoes in Italy don’t just hurt…they end trips early. I say this as someone who walked those streets for two years. Plan your footwear before you plan anything else.

How Hot Does Italy Get in Summer?

Italy in summer is hot…and if you are coming from a moderate climate, it can catch you completely off guard. Average temperatures in July and August in central and southern Italy sit between 85 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit (29 to 38 degrees Celsius), with Rome and Sicily regularly hitting even higher. Northern cities like Milan and Venice are somewhat cooler, but still warm enough that heavy fabrics and dark colors become genuinely uncomfortable within minutes of being outside.

The heat in Italy is dry in some regions and more humid near the coast, which affects how your skin, your makeup, and your clothing perform. Coastal areas like the Amalfi Coast, Cinque Terre, and Venice can feel sticky and warm in a way that makes lightweight, breathable fabrics non-negotiable. Inland cities like Rome and Florence are drier and often hotter, with heat that radiates off ancient stone and marble in a way that makes you feel it even in the shade.

The practical takeaway for packing: choose the most breathable, lightest fabrics you own. Linen is your best friend in Italy. Cotton is your second best friend. Everything else is a gamble.

One thing I loved about Italian summers even in the heat was the evenings. As the sun sets and the temperature drops even a few degrees, the entire country seems to come alive. Evening passeggiata (strolls), outdoor dining, aperitivo on a terrace…these are the moments Italy was made for. A light layer for evening is worth packing even in peak summer because the evenings are when you will most want to be comfortable and beautiful at the same time.

What Is the Dress Code for Italian Churches and Sacred Sites?

This is the question that catches the most visitors off guard…and it matters in Italy where some of the world’s most extraordinary churches, basilicas, and cathedrals are also active places of worship with strict dress requirements.

The general rule across most Italian churches and sacred sites is this: covered shoulders and covered knees are required for both men and women. No sleeveless tops, tank tops, spaghetti straps, shorts, or short skirts. This applies to the Vatican and St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, the Duomo in Florence, St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, and most churches throughout the country. They mean it. Guards at the entrance will turn you away, and there’s no borrowing a covering on site the way some tourist destinations offer wraps at the door.

When packing for Italy this summer, the easiest solution is to always have a lightweight scarf or sarong in your bag when sightseeing. It takes up almost no space, weighs almost nothing, wraps around your shoulders or waist in seconds, and solves every church entry situation without requiring you to change your outfit or miss an experience you have been looking forward to.

A linen button-down shirt over a tank top also works great as both a sun protection layer and a church-ready cover. One item doing two jobs is the strategy for smart Italy packing.

Don’t let the dress code stress you out. With one scarf in your day bag you’re prepared for every church, every cathedral, and every beautiful ancient building that was there long before the tourists arrived.

Can You Do Italy Carry-On Only?

Yes…and Italy in summer is actually one of the most carry-on friendly destinations in Europe because the heat means lighter, smaller clothing that packs down beautifully. Linen dresses, lightweight tops, and thin cotton pieces take up a fraction of the space of the heavier clothing you might pack for cooler destinations.

I did Italy as part of our three-week Europe trip with one carry-on suitcase and one personal item and never once felt like I was missing something. The key is a capsule wardrobe built around a color palette so everything mixes and matches, limiting yourself to two or three pairs of shoes (which are always the bulkiest item), and using travel-size containers for your skincare rather than full bottles.

The other practical benefit of carry-on only in Italy specifically is navigating the country itself. Italian train stations, cobblestone streets, and historic city centers were not designed for large rolling suitcases. Getting a carry-on up a flight of stairs in a Venetian building, through the turnstiles of a Roman metro, or across the uneven stones of a Florentine piazza is so much easier than dragging a checked bag through the same journey. Pack light and Italy becomes pure joy. Pack heavy and every transition becomes a workout.

What to Pack for Italy in Summer — The Complete Women Over 40 Capsule Wardrobe

I’ve rounded up what I packed and what would be great things for you to pack on your summer trip to Italy. Think, less is more. Quality over quantity. And don’t underestimate the power of a good accessory!

Clothes — What to Wear in Italy in Summer

When I pack for Italy, I think about three things: the heat, the activities, and the culture. I also pick a color palette…usually neutrals with one or two accent colors…and build every piece around it so I can mix and match without thinking about it.

Here’s what I would pack for an Italy summer trip:

  • Dresses (2-3 — these do all the heavy lifting in an Italy wardrobe)
  • Lightweight maxi skirt (perfect for churches, evening dinners, and sightseeing)
  • Lightweight tops (white and neutral — they go with everything and look effortlessly Italian)
  • Linen or cotton trousers (one neutral pair covers you for smart casual dining and cooler days)
  • Jean skirt (versatile, packs small, looks polished with a simple top)
  • Light cardigan or linen button-down (for church visits and cooler evenings)
  • One slightly dressier outfit for a special evening out

The golden rule for Italy: choose quality basics over quantity. Two beautiful linen dresses worn multiple ways will serve you better than eight mediocre pieces that only work with one thing. Italians do not wear a lot…they wear a little, very well.

Shoes — The Best Shoes for Italy in Summer

I cannot stress this enough. Shoes in Italy are everything. The cobblestone streets are ancient and uneven and they will expose every weakness in your footwear within the first twenty minutes of sightseeing. I’ve watched women limp through the Roman Forum in heels. I’ve seen sandals with thin soles give up entirely on a Florentine street. I lived in Italy for two years and I learned this the hard way before I learned it the right way.

Here’s what you need for Italy in summer:

  • Leather walking sandals with arch support…your most important investment. These go with every dress, every outfit, and every occasion from a morning museum visit to an evening aperitivo. Spend what you need to spend on a good pair. You’ll wear them every single day.
  • Comfortable sneakers…for longer walking days, day trips, and any time you know you will be on your feet for hours. Look for ones that look put together enough to wear with casual dresses.
  • One pair of flat dressy sandals…for nicer evenings and situations where you want to look a little more polished without adding heel height.

That’s three pairs. That’s all you need. Italy in summer does not require more than this.

And please…leave the heels at home. I know. I love heels too. But Italian cobblestones are not heels-compatible and you will not enjoy a single step. Flat leather sandals look just as beautiful and you will actually enjoy walking in them.

Accessories That Elevate Simple Outfits in Italy

If there’s one country in the world where accessories make the difference between looking like a tourist and looking like you belong, it’s Italy. Italians understand that a simple outfit elevated by the right accessories is definitely more chic than an overcomplicated look. A beautiful scarf, a quality leather bag, a pair of classic sunglasses…these are the details that take a linen dress from adequate to effortless.

Here’s what I would bring:

  • A silk or lightweight scarf — non-negotiable in Italy. It covers your shoulders at churches, ties around your bag as decoration, wraps around your waist as a skirt over a swimsuit, and adds color to a neutral outfit. One scarf doing five jobs.
  • A quality leather or leather-look crossbody bag — Italians love their bags and they notice yours. A quality bag elevates every outfit and keeps your hands free for gelato, which you will be eating constantly. A crossbody is also the safest option in crowded tourist areas.
  • Classic sunglasses — Italy has some of the most beautiful light in the world and you’ll be squinting through all of it without a good pair.
  • A wide-brimmed hat or baseball hat — the Italian summer sun is intense and a hat is both practical and stylish.
  • Minimal jewelry — a few quality pieces worn consistently look more Italian than lots of jewelry that changes every day.

What NOT to Pack for Italy in Summer

Sometimes the most valuable packing advice is knowing what to leave at home. Italy specifically has a few non-negotiable items to leave behind.

  • Heels. This comes first because it matters most. Italy’s cobblestone streets, ancient pavement, and uneven historic surfaces make heels genuinely impractical and uncomfortable. Even women who consider themselves very capable in heels have been humbled by the streets of Rome and Florence. Flat leather sandals look just as beautiful and will change your entire trip experience.
  • Anything white that you care about. Italian street food is incredible and also relentless in its ability to find your clothing. Gelato, pasta, espresso, arancini…Italy will test every white item you own. If you bring white, bring it knowing it might come home with a souvenir.
  • Heavy fabrics. Denim, thick cotton, polyester blends…anything that traps heat will become unwearable within minutes of stepping outside in July or August. Leave it all at home and embrace linen completely.
  • A fanny pack worn on your front. I know they’re practical and popular but in Italy they mark you immediately as a tourist in a way that makes you a target for pickpockets in crowded areas. A crossbody bag worn close to your body is both safer and more stylish.
  • Full-size beauty products. Use travel containers, comply with TSA rules, and save the bag space. Italy has excellent pharmacies and beauty shops if you run out of something.
  • Too many things in general. The golden rule I learned from two years of living in Italy: you’ll buy things there. Leave room in your bag for what Italy offers…leather goods, beautiful ceramics, local products that you will want to bring home. Pack light going in so you have space coming out.

My Best Packing Tips for Italy — What Two Years of Living There Taught Me

I’m not going to give you generic packing advice. I lived in Italy for two years with my husband and four children and I’ve visited many times. Here’s what I actually learned.

Italians dress with intention. There’s a concept in Italian culture called la bella figura…literally “the beautiful figure” or making a good impression. It’s not about vanity. It’s about presenting yourself with care and respect. When you make an effort with how you look in Italy, people respond to you differently. Doors open a little easier. Interactions are a little warmer. Dress with intention and Italy welcomes you completely.

Quality over quantity is the Italian way. One beautiful linen dress worn three times beats five mediocre ones worn once each. Choose pieces you genuinely love and you will reach for them every single day without thinking about it.

Your bag is a statement. I mentioned this in the accessories section but it bears repeating. Italians notice bags. A quality leather crossbody or tote elevates every outfit you own and lasts for many more trips. It is worth the investment. Check out my favorite leather purses for travel…I love Sapahn and Quince for beautiful bags that work beautifully in Italy.

Comfortable shoes are not a compromise. The best-dressed women in Italy are almost always wearing beautiful flat leather sandals or stylish sneakers. Heels are for specific occasions, not for navigating a city. Invest in leather sandals that look beautiful and feel like nothing and you will thank yourself every single day of your trip.

Do not overpack. I know everyone says this. But I’m saying it specifically about Italy because Italy has beautiful shopping. Leave room for what you’ll find there. A leather wallet from Florence, a ceramic bowl from the Amalfi Coast, a silk scarf from a market stall in Rome. These are the things you will still have in twenty years. Leave space for them.

Frequently Asked Questions — What to Pack for Italy in Summer

  • What should women over 40 wear in Italy during the summer? The key is choosing lightweight, breathable clothing that feels polished but comfortable. Linen dresses, cotton tops, flowy skirts, linen trousers, and comfortable walking shoes will take you almost anywhere in Italy. Instead of packing lots of outfits, focus on a capsule wardrobe with pieces that mix and match easily. Italians tend to dress with intention, so simple, well-fitting basics often look more appropriate than overly casual athletic wear.
  • Can you wear shorts in Italy? Absolutely! You’ll see both locals and tourists wearing shorts during the hot summer months. However, if you plan to visit churches or religious sites, shorts that expose your knees may prevent you from entering. For sightseeing days, I prefer dresses, skirts, or lightweight linen pants because they’re comfortable in the heat and make it easy to visit churches without needing to change clothes.
  • What shoes should I pack for Italy? If there’s one place not to sacrifice comfort, it’s Italy. Between the cobblestone streets, uneven sidewalks, hills, and countless hours of walking, supportive shoes are essential. I recommend bringing a comfortable pair of fashion sneakers for sightseeing, a pair of versatile sandals for warmer days and evenings, and, if your itinerary includes nicer dinners, one dressier option that’s still comfortable enough to walk in. Whatever you choose, make sure you’ve worn them before your trip…Italy is not the place to break in new shoes.
  • Is it okay to wear sneakers in Italy? Yes! Comfortable white or neutral-colored sneakers are common throughout Italy and pair beautifully with dresses, skirts, jeans, or linen trousers. They strike the perfect balance between comfort and style, making them one of the best shoes you can pack for a summer trip.
  • How many outfits do I need for a week in Italy? If you’re packing carry-on only, you can comfortably travel for a week with around seven to ten interchangeable outfits. The secret isn’t packing more clothes…it’s packing smarter. Choose a simple color palette so every top works with every bottom, and you’ll have far more outfit combinations than you expect.
  • Do I need a jacket in Italy during the summer? Probably not a heavy one. Summer days are typically very warm, but evenings can cool down, especially if you’re dining outdoors or traveling in northern Italy. A lightweight cardigan, linen button-down, or thin jacket is usually all you’ll need. It also comes in handy for entering churches where you’ll need to cover your shoulders.
  • Should I bring a scarf to Italy? Yes! In fact, I think it’s one of the smartest things you can pack. A lightweight scarf takes up almost no room in your suitcase and can be used to cover your shoulders when visiting churches, add warmth on cooler evenings, or instantly elevate a simple outfit. It’s one of the hardest-working accessories in my suitcase.
  • Can I pack carry-on only for Italy? Definitely! In fact, I highly recommend it. Traveling with only a carry-on makes navigating train stations, airports, stairs, and cobblestone streets so much easier. I traveled through Italy with just a carry-on during our three-week Europe trip and never felt like I was missing anything. A thoughtfully planned capsule wardrobe is much more valuable than an overstuffed suitcase.
  • What should I avoid wearing in Italy? You don’t need to completely change your personal style, but I’d avoid clothing that’s overly casual for sightseeing, such as worn-out athletic shorts, oversized graphic T-shirts, or flip-flops for all-day walking. Italians generally appreciate dressing neatly, and you’ll likely feel more confident exploring beautiful cities when your outfit reflects the surroundings. In some destinations, wearing only beachwear away from the beach can even result in fines, so it’s best to cover up when walking through towns or visiting restaurants and shops.

Italy gets into your soul in a way that’s hard to explain unless you’ve been there. The food, the art, the history, the way light falls on ancient stone in the late afternoon…it’s a country that reminds you that beauty is worth paying attention to. That life is worth showing up for fully. That you were not made to rush through things.

Getting your packing right means you arrive in Italy free to actually be in Italy. No blisters from the wrong shoes, no overheating in the wrong fabrics, no turned away at church doors in the wrong outfit. Knowing what to pack for Italy in summer means you can say yes to everything the country offers.

Pack light. Pack Italian. Pack for the woman who is fully, completely present for every beautiful moment.

If you want to see exactly how I packed for our three weeks in Europe including Italy…every outfit, every beauty product, and what I would do differently…I’ve linked all my packing and travel videos above. And if you want a skincare routine that keeps your skin glowing from the cobblestones of Rome to the cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, fill out my free skin questionnaire and I will personally build you a custom routine.

Go to Italy. Eat the pasta. Walk until your feet are tired and your heart is full. You were made for this kind of beautiful.

Switzerland has been one of the most beautiful places I have ever visited in my life. And I’ve been to a lot of places! The mountains are impossibly green and dramatic. The air is clean and cool even in summer. The villages look like they were painted by for a fairytale. We spent time there on our three-week Europe trip and I still think about it almost every single day.

But here’s the thing about packing for Switzerland in summer that caught me off guard…it’s completely different from packing for anywhere else in Europe. Switzerland is not one climate. It’s not one type of terrain. You can be in a chic lakeside city like Lucerne in the morning, perfectly warm in a linen dress and sandals, and hiking up a mountain trail in the afternoon wishing you had brought a proper jacket. The range of what you need is wider than almost any other summer destination I have visited.

Getting your Switzerland packing list for summer right means understanding that dual nature of the country…the elegant European city side and the wild, breathtaking Alpine side…and packing for both without doubling the size of your bag. For women over 40 who want to look stylish, feel comfortable, and not spend their trip wishing they had packed differently, this guide is everything I would tell you before you go.

I also want to be upfront: I did Switzerland carry-on only as part of our three-week Europe trip…one carry-on suitcase, one personal item, no checked bags. Everything I’m recommending here has been tested on cobblestone streets, mountain paths, via ferrata courses, and yes, while paragliding. So you can trust that these suggestions are real, not theoretical.

Let’s pack for Switzerland.

What to Know About Switzerland in Summer Before You Pack

Packing for Switzerland in the summer is a little different than packing for your typical warm-weather vacation. One day you might be strolling through a charming lakeside town in a T-shirt and sneakers, and the next you could be riding a cable car to a snow-covered mountain where you’ll be reaching for a jacket.

The biggest thing to remember is this:

Dress in layers.

Summer temperatures vary dramatically depending on your elevation. Cities like Zurich, Lucerne, and Interlaken can be pleasantly warm during the day, while mountain destinations like Jungfraujoch, the Matterhorn, or Schilthorn can be 20–30°F cooler…even in July and August. Afternoon rain showers and brisk mountain winds are also common, so a lightweight waterproof jacket is one of the smartest things you can pack.

Another thing that surprised me was just how much walking we did. Between trails, cobblestone streets, scenic viewpoints, and charming villages, comfortable shoes quickly became my most-worn item. I was grateful I packed supportive sneakers that looked cute enough to wear with everything from activewear to casual dresses.

And don’t underestimate the Alpine sun. Even though temperatures may feel cooler in the mountains, the higher elevation means the sun’s rays are much stronger. A hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a lightweight layer are must-haves for long days outdoors.

Resist the urge to overpack! Switzerland is one of those destinations where a simple capsule wardrobe works beautifully. Neutral basics that mix and match, a few lightweight layers, and comfortable walking shoes will take you almost anywhere…from hiking in the Alps to enjoying dinner by the lake. I lived out of a suitcase for weeks while traveling through Europe, and I can honestly say I wore the same favorite pieces again and again. Packing less made navigating towns, hotels, and airports so much easier, and I never felt like I was missing anything.

When it comes to Switzerland in summer, versatility is far more important than quantity.

How Warm Does Switzerland Get in Summer?

Switzerland in summer is warm and sunny in the cities and valleys…typically between 70 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit (21 to 29 degrees Celsius) in July and August at lower elevations. However, temperatures drop significantly as you gain altitude. In the Alps, even on a warm summer day, temperatures can be 20 to 30 degrees cooler than in the cities below and weather can change quickly, with sunshine giving way to clouds, wind, or even rain within an hour. This temperature range is the defining challenge of packing for Switzerland in summer and the reason a good layering strategy is essential regardless of how warm your trip starts.

We visited Switzerland at the end of May and beginning of June, so it wasn’t quite summer. But we experienced lovely warm and sunny days and cooler evenings. But the weather can change quickly! We were on a hike around a lake when we noticed storm clouds rolling in. By the time we reached the gondola to take us back down the mountain, it had turned into hail and rain and everyone around us were drenched. But we weren’t because we packed rain jackets!

Packing for Both Cities and Mountain Regions…Why Switzerland Needs Both

We did all the things in Switzerland! From hiking to shopping and everything in between. We visited small villages tucked away in valleys and rode to the some of the tallest mountain peaks in the country. And because of the variety of terrain and activities, you need to pack accordingly.

But, if you pick a color scheme and pack pieces that you can mix and match, you won’t have any problems being comfortable and also looking stylish!

Can You Do Switzerland Carry-On Only?

Yes! Switzerland is very doable carry-on only, even with the layering requirements, as long as you are strategic about your choices.

The key is choosing lightweight, packable layers that compress small…a thin down jacket, a merino cardigan, and a versatile light scarf can cover most temperature scenarios without taking up significant space. Build your clothing capsule around neutral pieces that mix and match easily, limit yourself to two to three pairs of shoes, and use travel-size containers for your skincare. I did three weeks in Europe including Switzerland with one carry-on suitcase and one personal item and would never travel any other way. The freedom is absolutely worth the discipline of packing light.

Switzerland Packing List Summer — The Complete Women Over 40 Capsule Wardrobe

Our family visited Switzerland for a week. We did a variety of activities and went to many locations. We wandered charming village streets, we hiked, we rode gondolas up steep mountainsides, we did a via ferrata course, paraglided (!!), and shopped. Here’s what I pack…

Clothes — What to Wear in Switzerland in Summer

When I pack a travel wardrobe capsule, I consider a few things:

  • Weather- I make sure to check the weather so I know what type of clothing to pack. I don’t need to pack a rain jacket if there’s no rain in the forecast. It’s nice to be prepared for anything, but when you’re limited on space, you have to pack strategically!
  • Activities- Consider the activities you’ll be doing while you travel. Pack the type of clothes, shoes, and accessories that will help you be prepared.
  • Color scheme- Pick a color scheme so your shoes, clothes, and accessories mix and match well together. This will allow you to create a lot of different looks without having to pack a ton of things!

Our time in Switzerland was amazing! I was comfortable and stylish through all the different activities we did. Here’s exactly what I packed in my carry-on:

Layering for Cooler Mountain Weather — What to Add

Layering is key when visiting Switzerland! We were hot one minute and bundling up the next. The weather was much warmer at the bottom of the gondola but once you arrived to the top of the mountain, it was frigid! The wind blew, the temperature dropped and we were so glad we packed layers to pile on.

But once we were back down in the valley, it was sunny and warm and pleasant. Make sure to always have a rain jacket, scarf, and hat with you so you can whip them out on short notice!

What NOT to Pack for Switzerland in Summer

Sometimes knowing what to leave behind is just as valuable as knowing what to bring. Here is everything I would tell you to leave at home…and exactly why.

  • Heels. I know. I’m sorry. But hear me out…the combination of cobblestone streets, mountain terrain, and rapidly changing weather makes them impractical for almost every situation. I love dressing up in heels, but Switzerland is not the place for them. If you must bring something to dress up an outfit, bring flat sandals that are comfortable and stylish.
  • Skip heavy denim which is too warm for city days and too stiff for mountain activities. Avoid packing clothes that only work for one type of environment…Switzerland requires versatile pieces that transition from city to mountain without adding bulk to your bag. Denim does not breathe, does not pack small, and takes forever to dry if you do laundry mid-trip. Leave them. Lightweight linen or cotton trousers give you the same coverage and versatility at a fraction of the weight and heat.
  • Leave full-size beauty products at home and use travel containers to comply with TSA liquid rules and save bag space. The TSA liquid restrictions apply on most international flights and full-size products will either get confiscated or force you to check a bag. Neither is worth it.
  • Resist the temptation to pack “just in case” items…Switzerland has excellent shopping if you genuinely need something you forgot.

The golden rule of packing for Greece: if you haven’t worn it in the last month at home, you won’t wear it on vacation. Be ruthless. Your back, your arms, and your overall trip experience will thank you.

My Best Packing Tips for Switzerland This Summer— What I Learned on Our Trip

I’ve lived in Italy and have traveled to many European countries. Here are a few things to consider when packing for Europe:

  • In general, Europeans dress nicely. They enjoy looking put together and polished. So leave the loungewear and yoga pants at home. Elevate your outfits and put a little pride in how you look. It’s amazing what dressing up can do for your attitude…when you feel good, you do good!
  • Europeans like classic pieces. Quality over quantity. Invest in higher quality pieces and you can wear them over and over!
  • Purses matter. Italians especially love their purses! Don’t pack a frumpy looking one. One of my favorite places to look for purses is Sapahn or Quince. Check out my favorite leather purses for traveling!

Frequently Asked Questions — Switzerland Packing List Summer

  • What should a woman over 40 pack for Switzerland in summer? For Switzerland in summer, women over 40 should pack a versatile capsule wardrobe that works for both charming lakeside cities and cooler mountain regions. Key pieces include lightweight dresses and linen trousers for city days, a warm mid-layer like a merino cardigan or fleece for mountain excursions, comfortable walking shoes that can handle cobblestone streets and light trails, and at least one layer that works for evening dining in Swiss cities which tend to be more polished than other European destinations. Because the weather can shift dramatically between elevations, layering is the most important packing strategy for Switzerland in summer.
  • How warm is Switzerland in summer?
  • What shoes should I pack for Switzerland in summer? Switzerland in summer requires more shoe versatility than most European destinations. Comfortable walking sneakers or supportive walking shoes are essential for mountain activities, hiking paths, and long city sightseeing days on uneven surfaces. A pair of versatile sandals or flat dressy shoes covers lakeside strolls and evening dinners in cities like Zurich, Lucerne, or Geneva. If you plan to do any mountain activities, trail or hiking shoes are worth the bag space…the terrain is rugged and regular sneakers can be slippery on mountain paths. Leave heels at home…the combination of cobblestones, mountain terrain, and unpredictable weather makes them impractical for almost every situation Switzerland will present.
  • Do I need a jacket in Switzerland in summer? Yes…a jacket or warm mid-layer is one of the most important things on your Switzerland packing list for summer. Even when temperatures are warm in the valleys and cities, mountain elevations can be significantly cooler and the weather can change quickly at any altitude. A lightweight packable down jacket or a warm merino cardigan that compresses small is ideal because it takes up minimal bag space but provides real warmth when you need it. If you plan to do any mountain activities like hiking, via ferrata, or paragliding, a windproof outer layer is also worth bringing. Many women are surprised by how cold it gets above the treeline even in July and August.
  • Can you do Switzerland carry-on only? Yes…Switzerland is very doable carry-on only, even with the layering requirements, as long as you are strategic about your choices.
  • What should I NOT pack for Switzerland in summer? For Switzerland in summer leave heels at home…the combination of cobblestone streets, mountain terrain, and rapidly changing weather makes them impractical for almost every situation. Skip heavy denim which is too warm for city days and too stiff for mountain activities. Avoid packing clothes that only work for one type of environment…Switzerland requires versatile pieces that transition from city to mountain without adding bulk to your bag. Leave full-size beauty products at home and use travel containers to comply with TSA liquid rules and save bag space. And resist the temptation to pack “just in case” items…Switzerland has excellent shopping if you genuinely need something you forgot.
  • What skincare should I bring to Switzerland in summer? For Switzerland in summer your skincare priorities are hydration, SPF, and wind protection, especially if you plan to spend time at higher elevations where UV exposure is stronger and the air is drier and cooler. A hydrating serum and moisturizer are non-negotiable for mature skin that needs consistent barrier support through changing climates. High SPF sunscreen is essential at altitude where UV radiation is significantly more intense than at sea level. A gentle cleanser, toner, eye cream, and moisturizer covers everything else. Waterless skincare formulas are ideal for travel…they are hydrating, nourishing, TSA-friendly, and perform beautifully across temperature ranges.

Switzerland does something to you. I’m not entirely sure how to explain it except to say that standing in the middle of those mountains…the air so clear and clean, the peaks incredibly green, the whole world reminding you it was designed by God…you feel very small and very grateful all at the same time. It’s one of those places that gets into your soul.

Getting your Switzerland packing list for summer right means you spend less time in your head about what you’re wearing and more time standing at the top of a mountain thinking thoughts you’ll remember for the rest of your life. The right layers, the right shoes, the right skincare…these things matter not because fashion matters but because comfort and confidence together allow you to say yes to every extraordinary thing the day offers. The via ferrata. The paraglide. The spontaneous hike to a view that takes your breath away.

Pack light. Pack smart. Pack for the woman you want to be on this trip…capable, comfortable, and completely present for every single moment.

If you want to see exactly what I packed for our three weeks in Europe including Switzerland…every outfit, every beauty product, every lesson learned…I have linked all my packing and travel videos above. And if you want a skincare routine that keeps your skin glowing no matter what elevation or climate you find yourself in, fill out my free skin questionnaire and I will personally build you a custom skin routine.

Go to Switzerland. Climb something. Eat the cheese. Watch the mountains turn golden at sunset. You were made for this kind of beautiful.

Greece has been on my bucket list for a long time. The whitewashed walls, the deep blue of the Aegean, the narrow streets that seem designed specifically for wandering slowly with a gelato in hand and nowhere to be. Our family just got back from a Greece cruise and we had the best time!

Here’s the thing about packing for Greece in summer: it takes intentionally planning. The heat is intense and dry. The terrain varies from smooth marble streets in Athens to cobblestone paths on Santorini to rocky cliffs in Crete. You’ll be in swimwear at the beach one hour and walking through a sacred site that requires covered shoulders the next. And if you are doing it carry-on only, every single item has to earn its spot.

Knowing what to pack for Greece in summer as a woman over 40 is its own specific art form. Our needs are different…we want to look effortlessly stylish without roasting in the heat, feel comfortable walking for hours without sacrificing our look, and have a skincare and beauty routine that actually survives hot temperatures and salt water. Generic packing lists written for 25-year-olds do not cut it.

This guide is everything I would tell my best friend before she got on a plane to Greece. What to wear, what to bring, what to leave at home, and how to look completely polished and confident from the moment you land to the last sunset you watch from a terrace with a glass of something cold and delicious in your hand. Let’s pack.

What to Know About Greece in Summer Before You Pack

Before you start pulling things out of your closet and trying to make them fit into a carry-on, there are a few things worth knowing about Greece in summer that will make every packing decision significantly easier. Greece is not a one-size-fits-all destination…the terrain, climate, culture, and dress expectations vary enough that packing without understanding them first is how women end up with the wrong shoes on the wrong streets and the wrong outfits at the wrong sites.

Greece in summer is hot. Like really hot. The kind of hot where the cobblestones radiate heat back up at you. The kind of hot where anything that isn’t breathable becomes unwearable within twenty minutes of leaving your hotel. Understanding the heat…and the specific way it behaves across different parts of Greece…is the most important thing you can do before you pack.

The terrain is also more varied than most people expect. Athens is marble and asphalt and wide modern streets. The islands are cobblestones, steep paths, and uneven surfaces that will end your trip early if you arrive in the wrong shoes. Some beaches are sandy and gentle. Others are rocky and dramatic. Your footwear choices need to account for all of it…which is why the shoes section of this guide is one of the most important things you will read before you go.

And then there’s the cultural context. Greece is a deeply spiritual country with a living, active Orthodox Christian tradition. Churches, monasteries, and many archaeological sites have specific dress requirements and showing up unprepared means being turned away at the door or having to buy an uncomfortable wrap from a tourist stall outside. A little advance knowledge saves a lot of awkward scrambling. With all of that in mind…here is what you actually need to know.

How Hot Does Greece Get in Summer?

Greece in summer is genuinely hot and if you’re not used to Mediterranean heat, it can catch you completely off guard. Average temperatures across most of Greece in July and August sit between 86 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit (30 and 38 degrees Celsius ), with some inland areas and southern islands regularly exceeding that. Athens in particular can feel even hotter due to the urban heat effect…white marble surfaces and stone streets absorb and reflect heat intensely, and midday in the city can feel almost overwhelming if you are not dressed for it.

The heat in Greece is dry rather than humid…like an oven kind of hot. There’s rarely the sticky, suffocating feeling of tropical humidity. But dry heat is dehydrating in its own way, and it affects your skin, your energy, and your makeup differently than humid heat does. For mature skin specifically, the combination of intense sun, dry heat, and salt air means your hydration and SPF routine becomes even more non-negotiable than usual.

A few practical things to know: the hottest part of the day is typically between noon and 4pm, and locals often do very little during these hours. Scheduling your biggest activities for early morning or late afternoon is not just culturally appropriate, but it’s the most pleasant way to experience the country. Many churches and archaeological sites also close during midday hours, so planning around the heat works in your favor logistically too.

Evenings cool down beautifully…especially on the islands where sea breezes make outdoor dining delightful even in peak summer. This is why having at least one or two lightweight layers in your bag is worth it. The temperature shift from a hot afternoon to a breezy island evening can be more significant than you expect.

What Is the Dress Code for Greek Churches and Sacred Sites?

This is the question most packing guides gloss over and it’s one of the most practically important ones to answer before you go, especially if your itinerary includes any of Greece’s extraordinary churches, monasteries, or sacred archaeological sites.

The general rule across most Orthodox Christian churches and monasteries in Greece is this: covered shoulders and covered knees are required for both men and women. Sleeveless tops, spaghetti straps, shorts, and short skirts are not permitted inside. Some sites are stricter than others…the monasteries of Meteora, for example, enforce dress codes rigorously and will not admit visitors who are not appropriately covered. Other smaller village churches are more relaxed, but it is always better to be prepared than to be turned away at what might be the most breathtaking building you have ever stood in front of.

The easiest solution…and the one I recommend for every woman visiting Greece…is to pack a large lightweight scarf or sarong and keep it in your day bag at all times. It takes up almost no space, weighs almost nothing, and works as a shoulder cover, a knee cover, a beach coverup, and an evening wrap all in one. A single versatile scarf is the most useful thing in your bag for navigating the cultural dress requirements of Greece without having to rethink your entire outfit.

For archaeological sites like the Acropolis in Athens, the dress code is less formal…there’s no strict requirement for covered shoulders or knees. But, comfortable, covered footwear is strongly recommended because the terrain is uneven marble and ancient stone that can be slippery and hard on bare or open-toed shoes, especially in the heat. Bring comfortable walking shoes you can trust on unlevel surfaces.

One more tip: if you’re visiting a monastery that’s still an active religious community…not just a tourist destination…dress on the more conservative side out of respect. Long skirts or pants and shirts with sleeves are a thoughtful choice for those visits. The people who live and pray in these places deserve that courtesy.

Can You Do Greece Carry-On Only?

Yes! And Greece in summer might actually be one of the easiest destinations in the world to do carry-on only.

The heat is your best friend when it comes to packing light. Summer clothing in Greece is minimal…lightweight dresses, sandals, swimwear, and one or two evening pieces. Nothing you need for this trip is heavy, bulky, or hard to compress. A lightweight dress packs down to almost nothing. A sarong is weightless. Sandals take up a fraction of the space of boots or sneakers. The climate requires the kind of light, packable wardrobe that carry-on travel is built around.

The island-hopping nature of most Greece itineraries also makes carry-on only the smarter choice logistically. Navigating ferries, small island airports, and cobblestone streets with a heavy checked bag is not fun! Women who have tried it will tell you the same thing: you do not want to be dragging a large suitcase up the steep, narrow steps of a Santorini village. A carry-on and a personal item that you can lift, carry, and manage independently is not just lighter…it’s more freeing. Trust me. I saw lots of women struggling!

The keys to making carry-on only work for Greece are choosing a capsule wardrobe that mix and match, packing only what you will actually reach for rather than what you think you might need, and being strategic about shoes…which are the bulkiest item in any summer bag. Two pairs of sandals and a pair of sneakers will cover almost every situation Greece will throw at you.

I have done carry-on only for three weeks in Europe….suitcase, toiletry bag, and personal item…and I would never go back to checked luggage for a summer trip. The freedom of moving through airports, ferry terminals, and cobblestone streets with everything you need on your back is one of the best things about traveling light. Greece is made for it.

What to Pack for Greece in Summer — The Complete Women Over 40 Packing List

Our family went on a Greece cruise and we visited lots of different locations around Greece. Our activities ranged from snorkeling, laying out on the beach, enjoying a lazy lunch at a cafe, wandering the narrow streets, popping into churches, touring historical sites. Here’s what I pack…

Make sure to check out my blog post about how to pack a travel wardrobe capsule that still feels stylish!

Clothes — What to Wear in Greece in Summer

Our Greece trip consisted of a lot of beach time, wandering the cities, exploring historical sites, and dinners on the cruise ship. So the pieces I packed reflect that. Here’s exactly what I packed in my carry-on:

Travel Essentials — Documents, Tech + the Things You Can’t Forget

Along with packing clothing, skincare, and makeup, there are some other essentials that you don’t want to forget when you’re traveling abroad! There’s nothing worse being in a foreign country and not having what you need when you need it! Here’s a list of things that are important to pack:

Documents:

  • Passport
  • Credit cards (make sure to check your credit card company’s policies on foreign transactions)

Technology:

  • Chargers for all your devices
  • Converters (make sure to check what kind of outlets the countries you’ll be visiting use)
  • Portable charger (You’ll be taking a lot of video and pictures and using Google Maps and your phone battery will die fast! A portable charger will be your life saver!)

First Aid:

  • Bandaids
  • Neosporin

Some of these may seem overkill, but trust me. I packed all of these things and ended up using quite a few of them! And there have been times when I wish I had something and I didn’t.

Travel Bags:

The bags you pack matter!! You don’t want to be lugging suitcases through airports and streets that have weak wheels and cheap plastic. You want something reliable, comfortable, that holds a ton! Here are the bags I always travel with:

What NOT to Pack for Greece in Summer

Sometimes knowing what to leave behind is just as valuable as knowing what to bring. Here is everything I would tell you to leave at home…and exactly why.

  • Heels. I know. I’m sorry. But hear me out I’ve lived in Italy and the streets of Santorini, Mykonos, and most other Greek islands are ancient cobblestone, steep inclines, and uneven marble that will end your evening early and possibly your ankle along with it. Even women who consider themselves very capable in heels have been humbled by the streets of Oia. Leave them at home, pack a beautiful pair of flat dressy sandals, and you will look just as elegant and actually enjoy your evening instead of spending it watching every step you take. The only exception might be a kitten heel or block heel for a flat surface dinner — but even then, I would ask yourself honestly whether you will reach for them. Most women do not.
  • Heavy denim. A pair of jeans might seem like a sensible versatile addition but in hot dry heat they become unwearable within twenty minutes of leaving your accommodation. Denim does not breathe, does not pack small, and takes forever to dry if you do laundry mid-trip. Leave them. Lightweight linen or cotton trousers give you the same coverage and versatility at a fraction of the weight and heat.
  • A full skincare shelf. I know this one is hard for those of us who take our routines seriously…and I say this as a licensed esthetician. But Greece is not the place for a 10-step routine. The heat, the salt air, and the pace of travel mean your skin needs simpler, more concentrated care rather than more products. A hydrating serum, a good moisturizer, a high SPF, your eye cream, and a gentle cleanser is genuinely everything you need. Anything beyond that is taking up space you could use for something better.
  • Full-size everything. Greece is not a destination that requires your full-size products for anything. Decant your skincare into travel containers, choose travel sizes where they exist, and leave the large bottles at home. The TSA liquid restrictions apply on most international flights and full-size products will either get confiscated or force you to check a bag. Neither is worth it.
  • Too many shoes. Shoes are the silent carry-on killer. They are heavy, bulky, and hard to compress. For Greece in summer you genuinely need three pairs maximum…comfortable walking sandals for days, flat dressy sandals for evenings, and flip flops or slides for the beach. That’s it. Every additional pair is weight and space you will regret the moment you are hauling your bag up a Santorini staircase.
  • A heavy bag or structured handbag. Your everyday bag in Greece needs to be lightweight, secure, and comfortable to carry for hours in the heat. A large structured leather handbag will be heavy before you put anything in it and uncomfortable to carry through archaeological sites and beach towns. A lightweight crossbody with a secure zipper or a small packable daypack is far more practical…and honestly looks just as chic with a linen dress and sandals.
  • Anything you’re bringing “just in case.” This is the category that fills bags and goes unused on every single trip. The just-in-case heels. The just-in-case cardigan. The just-in-case fourth swimsuit. Greece is a highly touristic destination with excellent shopping…if you genuinely need something you forgot, you can almost certainly find it. Pack with intention, not anxiety. Leave the just-in-cases at home and trust yourself to figure it out if you need to.

The golden rule of packing for Greece: if you haven’t worn it in the last month at home, you won’t wear it on vacation. Be ruthless. Your back, your arms, and your overall trip experience will thank you.

My Best Packing Tips for Greece — What I’ve Learned from Traveling Europe

One of my favorite places to look for purses is Sapahn. Check out my favorite leather purses for traveling!

Frequently Asked Questions — What to Pack for Greece in Summer

  • What should a woman over 40 pack for Greece in summer? For Greece in summer, women over 40 should prioritize lightweight, breathable fabrics in neutral or Mediterranean tones that can be mixed and matched easily. Key pieces include linen or cotton dresses that work for both beach days and evening dinners, a lightweight layer for air-conditioned restaurants and churches, comfortable walking sandals that can handle cobblestones, and a versatile coverup for beach to street transitions. For beauty, choose heat-proof makeup and a hydrating SPF-focused skincare routine…the Greek sun is intense and mature skin needs extra protection and hydration in the heat.
  • How many outfits do I need for a week in Greece? For a week in Greece, five to seven outfits is plenty…especially if you choose pieces that mix and match easily. The key is building a capsule wardrobe around two or three neutral base pieces that work with everything else you pack. In the heat, you will likely repeat outfits more comfortably than at home, and laundry services are widely available on most Greek islands if you need a refresh mid-trip. Choosing lightweight, wrinkle-resistant fabrics means everything comes out of your suitcase looking fresh without needing to be ironed.
  • What shoes are best for Greece in summer? The best shoes for Greece in summer are comfortable walking sandals with arch support, a pair of flat or low-heeled dressy sandals for evening, and flip flops or slides for the beach. Avoid heels entirely on the islands…the cobblestone streets of Santorini and Mykonos are notoriously difficult to navigate in anything other than flat shoes, and even locals wear flats. Look for sandals with adjustable straps that won’t dig in when your feet swell in the heat. Leather sandals in a neutral tone are the most versatile investment…they work with everything from a swimsuit coverup to a dinner dress.
  • What should I NOT wear in Greece? In Greece you should avoid wearing heavy fabrics like denim or thick synthetics in the summer heat…they’ll be uncomfortable within minutes outdoors. Avoid high heels on the islands where cobblestone streets make them impractical and potentially dangerous. When visiting churches, monasteries, or sacred archaeological sites, avoid sleeveless tops, shorts, or short skirts…covered shoulders and knees are required at many religious sites and some tourist areas. Beachwear should stay at the beach…walking through towns or entering restaurants in swimwear is considered disrespectful in most Greek communities.
  • Do I need to cover up in Greece? You do need to cover up when visiting churches, monasteries, and some religious or historical sites in Greece…covered shoulders and knees are typically required. A lightweight scarf or sarong packed in your day bag is the easiest solution…it takes up almost no space and doubles as a beach coverup or evening wrap. Outside of religious sites, Greece is generally quite relaxed about summer clothing, though walking through town in swimwear is frowned upon in most communities. Packing one or two versatile coverup pieces means you are always prepared without having to think about it.
  • What skincare should I bring to Greece in summer? For Greece in summer, your skincare bag should prioritize sun protection and hydration above everything else. A high-SPF sunscreen worn daily is non-negotiable…the Greek sun is intense and reflects strongly off white walls and water. For mature skin specifically, a hydrating serum and lightweight moisturizer help counteract the dehydrating effects of heat, sun, and air travel. A gentle cleanser, your regular eye cream, and a facial mist for refreshing your skin throughout the day complete a practical, carry-on friendly skincare kit. Waterless skincare formulas travel particularly well…they are concentrated, TSA-friendly in smaller sizes, and perform beautifully in heat.
  • Can you do Greece carry-on only? Yes…Greece in summer is one of the easiest destinations to do carry-on only because the warm weather means lightweight, compact clothing that packs down small. A capsule wardrobe built around five to seven pieces that mix and match, one pair of walking sandals, one pair of evening sandals, beach shoes, a compact toiletry kit, and your travel makeup essentials can fit comfortably into a standard carry-on for trips of one to two weeks. For longer trips, choosing accommodations with laundry facilities or using a local laundry service mid-trip makes carry-on only very manageable even for three weeks or more.

Greece has a way of making you feel more alive. Something about the light there…makes everything look more beautiful. The food tastes better. The sunsets last longer. And somehow, surrounded by all that history and all that blue, the small things that usually take up space in your head start to feel very small.

Knowing what to pack for Greece in summer means you can spend less time worrying about what you’re wearing and more time being fully present in one of the most beautiful places on earth. The right clothes, the right shoes, the right skincare…these aren’t trivial details. They’re what allow you to say yes to the spontaneous swim, the long walk, the dinner that turns into dancing. They’re what let you show up fully for every single moment.

If you want to see exactly what I packed for my own Europe trip…including my full carry-on, toiletry bag, and personal item…I’ve linked my packing video above. And if you want a skincare routine that keeps your skin glowing no matter where in the world you are, fill out my free skin questionnaire and I’ll personally build you a custom routine.

Finding the right purse for summer travel can honestly make a bigger difference than most people realize. When you’re walking through airports, exploring new cities, heading to dinner, or spending long days sightseeing, you want a bag that’s stylish, lightweight, functional, and comfortable to carry. And after 40, many of us care less about carrying a trendy bag that hurts our shoulders and more about finding pieces that are practical and beautiful. That’s why I’ve been loving Sapahn purses for summer travel. Their bags are thoughtfully designed, versatile, ethically made, and easy to style with everything from casual vacation outfits to dressier evening looks. In this post, I’m sharing some of my favorite purses for summer travel and why they’ve become such great staples for warm-weather trips. Crossbody bags, lightweight totes, and versatile neutral handbags are frequently recommended for travel because they balance comfort, security, and style.

What Makes Sapahn Bags So Good?

I’ve been a Sapahn customer for YEARS! I’m talking like 7 years. They are so so good! Here are just a few reasons why Sapahn bags are amazing (IMHO):

  • They are handmade in Thailand.
  • They are made from leather.
  • Their hardware (zippers and buckles) is incredible quality.
  • Each bag is versatile, giving you more bang for your buck.
  • The quality is top notch, giving you a purse that will last for years!
  • They are all beautiful!

Are Sapahn Purses Worth It?

Are Sapahn bags worth the money? I absolutely think so! I am a firm believer of quality over quantity. I think it’s best to save your money and buy better products that cost more than to have a ton of so-so products that are cheaper. Read my Sapahn review to see the bags I have and love.

Sapahn bags will last you for years! Leather gets better with age so your purse will be your side kick through many of life’s experiences.

Sapahn Wallet

If you need a good wallet for traveling, then here are some great Sapahn wallet options that will fit everything you need:

  • Parker Deluxe Wristlet– This wallet is more than a wallet. It can also hold your phone and passport. It works great as a wallet or a clutch or wristlet.
  • Winnie Jo XL Wallet– This is a bit bigger than the Paker Deluxe Wristlet and can be worn in all the same ways!
  • Ciara Crossbody and Wallet– The Ciara has a little more structure than the Winnie Jo and a zipper closure. But it is just as versatile!
  • Staney Crossbody– This was my first Sapahn bag and it does so much! It’s a glorified wallet because it is also a clutch, crossbody, and belt bag! It’s amazing and so classy!

A crossbody is the perfect purse for traveling!! The size makes it a great addition to any outfit and will hold everything you need for a day exploring. Here are some great Sapahn crossbody options:

  • Jori Crossbody– This is a great size for everyday use! It will hold the essentials and then some!
  • Sarah Ann– This bag does it all. It can be worn as a crossbody, shoulder bag, clutch, or belt bag! It’s my personal fave and I bring it everywhere I travel.
  • ADA Crossbody– This is a great smaller crossbody bag that will hold all your daily essentials!
  • Linda Jean– I like to call this my Mary Poppin’s bag. It doesn’t look like it holds nearly as much as it does! It can be worn as a crossbody, shoulder bag, or hand bag.

Sapahn Crossbody

Sapahn Backpack

These backpacks are all so perfect for traveling!

  • Chloe Convertible Backpack– This backpack is amazing! It can be worn as a backpack, as a handbag, or as a crossbody bag. It even has a cool pocket that can attach to your suitcase, making traveling through the airport a breeze!
  • Amelia Backpack– This is a classic backpack, but elevated since it’s made with leather and with the highest quality hardware.
  • Pepper Convertible Backpack– If you need a smaller backpack to hold your essentials, then this bag is for you! You can attach the straps in different ways to get the perfect look and fit you want.
  • Rodica Backpack Tote– Again, another backpack that can be worn in lots of different ways!!

A backpack is great for a carry on if you’re flying or a travel companion if you’re on a road trip. It helps keep everything you need really handy. But backpacks don’t have to be frumpy. These Sapahn backpacks are functional and stylish:

FAQs

  • What type of purse is best for summer travel? Crossbody bags are one of the most popular options for summer travel because they keep your hands free, distribute weight more comfortably, and are easier to carry during sightseeing or long travel days. Lightweight totes and versatile shoulder bags are also great options depending on your travel style.
  • Why are crossbody purses good for travel? Crossbody purses are practical for travel because they’re comfortable to wear, harder to misplace, and help keep your belongings close while walking through airports, tourist areas, or busy cities. Many travelers prefer them for both convenience and security.
  • What should you carry in a summer travel purse? A good summer travel purse should comfortably fit your essentials like:
    • phone
    • wallet
    • sunglasses
    • lip products
    • sunscreen
    • travel documents
    • portable charger
    • small makeup essentials
    • The goal is to stay organized without carrying a heavy oversized bag.
  • Are neutral purses best for travel? Neutral purses are often the easiest option for travel because they pair well with multiple outfits and help simplify packing. Colors like tan, cream, black, or soft metallics tend to work especially well for summer vacations.
  • How many purses should you bring on vacation? Most people only need 1–2 versatile purses for a summer trip: one everyday crossbody or shoulder bag & one slightly dressier option for dinners or evenings out. Choosing versatile bags that work with multiple outfits can help avoid overpacking.
  • What makes Sapahn purses different? Sapahn is known for creating ethically made handbags with a focus on quality craftsmanship, functionality, and timeless style. Many women love that the bags feel elevated and stylish while still being practical enough for everyday use and travel.

At the end of the day, the best purses for summer travel are the ones that help you feel comfortable, organized, and confident while still fitting your personal style. Whether you prefer a hands-free crossbody for sightseeing, a roomy tote for flights, or a versatile everyday bag that works from day to night, having the right purse can make traveling feel so much easier. I love that Sapahn bags combine beauty, functionality, and thoughtful craftsmanship in a way that feels elevated but still practical for real life. If you’re looking to simplify your travel style while still feeling polished and put together, investing in quality purses for summer travel is absolutely worth it. Travel experts often recommend choosing versatile bags that can transition easily between casual daytime use and evenings out to reduce overpacking.

Not only has my family lived abroad for 2 years together, but we’ve traveled full-time for the past year together. And our family has never been as close and as strong as we have been because of it! Family travel is so rewarding! Here are 5 ways traveling can strengthen your family and why you should do it!

You Experience New Things Together

When you travel to a new place, you get to experience new things. New foods, new people, new cultures, new smells, new sites…all the new things! And you get to do it together. When you experience new things together, you create a bond. You create opinions together, experiences together, memories together. It’s the best! Tasting Thai food in Thailand, watching a Chinese New Year performance in Malaysia, snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef, attending a Broadway show in New York city, and eating gelato in Italy are all new experiences we did together this year that will last a lifetime!

5 Ways Traveling Can Strengthen Your Family at iamjoellen.com

You Rely on Each Other

Because you’re experiencing new things in new places, you learn to rely on each other. You don’t know anyone. You don’t know where you’re going. You learn together. You grow together. You rely on each other’s strengths and lift each other up. Our kids learned to get along better with each other because they don’t have anyone else to talk to and play with! Public transit is always tough when going to a new place. So thank goodness my husband takes the rein on getting around while my family can count on me to always be able to whip something up in the kitchen with whatever ingredients we can find at the local store.

You Create Memories Together

When you’re doing family travel, you get to create memories together! You get to go to new places, see new things, experience new experiences and create really cool memories together. Now, sometimes those memories are awesome and good. And sometimes those memories are not so good….like having to be stranded at an airport for 2 days because of a delayed flight with Burger King vouchers for all 3 meals. But whether they’re good or bad experiences, they’re memories nonetheless and you will talk about them for years to come!

Why You Should Make Family Travel a Priority at iamjoellen.com

You Do Hard Things Together

Traveling isn’t always butterflies and roses. There can be some tough times thrown in the mix. And you learn to do hard things together. You get to see Dad step up to the plate or Mom show her extra nurturing side or the kids practice patience. It’s so good to see your loved one be tough. It’s so good to go through hard times together and see how you make it through. It’s so rewarding growing stronger together! Doing hard things like having super long travel days, getting our rental van stuck in a ditch in Italy, almost losing our son on a train, and not being able to find a restaurant that’s open are just a few of the hard things we’ve had to deal with when traveling. But those times toughen us and make us stronger.

5 Ways Traveling Can Strengthen Your Family at iamjoellen.com

You Count Your Blessings

When you have the opportunity to visit new places, you learn to appreciate the modern conveniences that you have at home. You see what others live with and how they live and you count your blessings. You learn to not take little things for granted. Visiting a place like Bali, Thailand, or Dominican Republic, will really make you appreciate the warm bed, hot water, dishwasher, and washer and dryer you have at home. Family travel can be so rewarding! When you do family travel, you learn, grow, and create memories together that will last a lifetime.

Planning a trip to Italy in the fall is exciting…the weather is cooler, the crowds are lighter, and the golden autumn light makes every piazza and vineyard feel like a movie set. But packing? That can be tricky. Italy in September, October, and November brings everything from warm afternoons to crisp evenings, plus unexpected rain showers. The key is packing smart: versatile pieces you can layer, comfortable shoes for cobblestone streets, and chic outfits that will help you blend in with stylish locals. This guide will walk you through exactly what to pack for Italy in fall so you feel prepared, comfortable, and fabulous no matter where your travels take you.

And PS…our family lived in Italy for 2 years. So not only have I traveled there as a tourist but have lived there as a citizen…so I know a thing or two 😉

FAQs

  • What should I wear in Italy in September? September in Italy can still feel summery, especially in the south. Think lightweight dresses, skirts, blouses, and sandals for daytime, with a light sweater or jacket for cooler evenings.
  • How cold is Italy in October and November? October brings mild days with crisp evenings, while November can be chilly and damp, especially in northern Italy. Pack layers, a coat, umbrella, and waterproof shoes.
  • Do Italians wear sneakers? Yes! Stylish sneakers are common, especially in cities like Rome and Milan. Just avoid bulky athletic trainers…opt for sleek, neutral sneakers that are comfortable yet chic.
  • What shoes should I wear in Italy in fall? Opt for comfortable, stylish shoes for walking—like leather sneakers, loafers, or ankle boots. Avoid flimsy sandals as streets can be uneven.
  • Should I pack a coat for Italy in the fall? A mid-weight coat or trench is perfect. You’ll want something versatile that works for layering and can handle both cool evenings and unexpected rain.
  • How do I dress like a local in Italy? Italians favor classic, neutral tones and well-fitted clothes. Think tailored jeans, leather boots, chic scarves, and minimal accessories. Avoid overly casual gym wear or athleisure.
  • Can I wear jeans in Italy in fall? Yes! Italians wear jeans, but choose dark or tailored styles to look polished. Pair them with a chic blouse or blazer for day-to-night wear.

What to Pack for Italy in Fall: Weather Overview by Month

Our family lived in southern Italy, about an hour and a half south of the Amalfi Coast. But we traveled from the tippy top of the Dolomites all the way down to Sicily and everywhere in between! We visited Venice, Milan, Lake Como, Cinque Terra, Pisa, Florence, Rome, Amalfi, Alberobello and more! Weather can vary depending on where you visit. But I will say that fall is such a great time to visit Italy! The crowds are gone and the weather is a little cooler but not too cold. It’s magic!

Let me break down what the weather is from September-November in general:

  • September- It can still feel summery, especially in the south. Think lightweight dresses, skirts, blouses, and sandals for daytime, with a light sweater or jacket for cooler evenings.
  • October- October brings mild days with crisp evenings so it’s best to wear something lighter in the daytime with a jacket or cardigan at night.
  • November- November can be chilly and damp, especially in northern Italy. Make sure to pack a rain jacket!

Italy Fall Outfit Ideas: Chic + Comfortable

When you’re traveling, you want to be comfortable. But you also want to fit in with the locals so you don’t stick out like a sore thumb! And you want to look stylish so you look amazing in all the pictures you’ll be taking. Here are some outfit formulas you can follow to create comfortable but stylish looks for your fall Italian trip!

1. Sightseeing Chic

  • Formula: Comfortable jeans + striped long-sleeve tee + trench coat + white sneakers + crossbody bag
  • Why it works: Easy for walking cobblestones all day while looking polished in photos.

2. Evening Aperitivo

  • Formula: Midi dress + leather jacket + ankle boots + statement earrings
  • Why it works: Transitions from a museum afternoon to drinks and dinner without an outfit change.

3. Layered Travel Day

  • Formula: Black leggings + oversized sweater + lightweight scarf + slip-on loafers + tote
  • Why it works: Comfortable for the train, but chic enough to head straight to lunch in Florence.

4. Tuscan Countryside Stroll

  • Formula: Midi skirt + fitted turtleneck + denim jacket + ballet flats or boots
  • Why it works: Feminine and practical, especially for day trips to vineyards or hill towns.

5. Rain-Ready Combo

  • Formula: Dark skinny jeans + chunky knit sweater + packable raincoat + waterproof boots
  • Why it works: Keeps you cozy and stylish for those drizzly Venetian afternoons.

6. Museum-to-Market Look

  • Formula: Tailored trousers + silk blouse + cardigan or blazer + loafers
  • Why it works: Comfortable but elevated—perfect for chic city vibes and shopping sprees.

Pro Tip: Stick to a neutral color palette (black, cream, camel, olive, navy) and then add a pop with scarves, accessories, or lipstick. It keeps outfits versatile and makes mixing & matching easy.

The Ultimate Italy Fall Packing List

It’s so easy to pack everything but the kitchen sink when traveling! You want to make sure you don’t forget anything!! But I promise you that you can pack strategically without packing everything! It’s amazing how you can mix and match different pieces to get completely different looks. Here are 12 items you can pack that will create 20+ outfits for your fall trip to Italy:

12 Pieces → 20+ Outfits

  1. Dark skinny jeans
  2. Tailored black trousers
  3. Midi skirt
  4. Comfortable leggings
  5. Striped long-sleeve tee
  6. Silk blouse
  7. Fitted turtleneck
  8. Oversized sweater
  9. Denim jacket
  10. Leather jacket
  11. Trench coat
  12. Midi dress

Shoes to Pack for Italy in Fall

Have you ever walked on cobblestone streets?? They’re charming but they’re uneven! If you’re not watching carefully or you’re wearing a poor shoe choice, you can twist an ankle or pull a muscle! Opt for comfortable, stylish shoes for walking, like leather sneakers, loafers, or ankle boots. Avoid flimsy sandals or heels.

Accessories That Make Traveling Easier

Accessories are a great way to elevate any outfit and pack less! Italians are great at accessorizing! Here are some accessories you can pack for your Italian trip:

  • Scarves (this is my favorite way to add a classy and colorful pop to any outfit!)
  • Jewelry- necklaces, earring, rings, bracelets, watch
  • Belts
  • Hats
  • Sunglasses
  • Purses (Sapahn purses are my absolute favorite purses to travel with! They’re handmade leather purses that are classy and practical. Check out my favorite ones HERE! Save 20% with this code: JOELLEN20)
  • Makeup (don’t underestimate the power of makeup! A good lip color and blush can help elevate any look!)

Packing Tips for Italy: How to Travel Light but Stylish

The key to packing light for any trip is to pack a travel capsule! Here are some tips on how you can pack intentionally so you still look stylish:

  • Pick a color scheme: Choosing several colors of clothing will help you pack less because your tops and bottoms and accessories can mix and match easily. Start with a neutral base (like black, white, tan, or navy) and add 2-3 accent colors that you love and that work well together. Stick to pieces that all coordinate.
  • Pack versatile pieces: You want to be able to wear something more than once. My personal rule is I don’t pack it unless it can be worn at least 3 different ways. For instance, pick a skirt that can be worn with several different tops. Pick shoes that can be worn with several different outfits.
  • Check the weather: Look into what the weather will be like during your trip. This will give you an idea on what type of clothing will keep you comfortable.
  • What activities will you be doing? Will you be sight-seeing, relaxing, doing fancy things, hiking, shopping…? Depending on what activities you’ll be doing, you’ll want to pack clothes accordingly.

Do you have plans to travel? Have you been wondering, is Seint makeup TSA approved??? Then you are in the right place! Keep scrolling…

FAQs

  • Is Seint makeup TSA approved? Yes! Seint’s IIID foundation and most other products come in cream form and are well under the TSA liquid limit (3.4 oz or 100 mL). As long as everything is packed properly, you can absolutely bring it in your carry-on.
  • Does Seint makeup count as a liquid when going through security? Seint IIID foundation is a solid cream and the eyeshadows are powder so it does not count as a liquid. (Pro tip: I’ve flown many times with my Seint compact in my carry-on and never had a problem.)
  • Can I bring my Seint palette in my personal item or purse? Yes! Your Seint palette is compact, magnetic, and carry-on friendly. Just make sure your palette is somewhere secure so it doesn’t fall and break the eyeshadows.
  • Do I need to check my Seint makeup when I fly? Nope! That’s the beauty of Seint…it’s travel-friendly. Everything fits in a slim compact that’s perfect for your personal item or carry-on. No need to risk lost luggage or broken powders. 🙌
  • What’s the best way to pack Seint makeup for travel? Keep your palette closed tight and tucked into a zippered pouch or your makeup bag. If you’re bringing brushes, use a brush holder or a travel case to protect the bristles.

What is Seint Makeup?

First off, what is Seint makeup? Seint is a beauty line created by Cara Killpack, a talented makeup artist. The makeup is designed to simplify your beauty routine by having to apply only one layer of makeup and from one simple compact. Seint is known for their iiid foundation that consists of a highlight, contour, blush and illuminator combo. The iiid makeup uses Highlight and Contouring (HAC) which uses a highlight shade to brighten your face and a contour shade to add dimension to your face. Along with iiid foundation, Seint also offers eyeshadows and other fun beauty products.

Is Seint Makeup TSA Approved?

YES!! Seint makeup is TSA approved! I have literally traveled around the world and I have taken Seint makeup with me in my carryon! My custom palette has been to 18 countries and counting! There’s nothing worse than losing your luggage so I always like to keep my essentials with me in my carryon, and that includes my makeup!

Since Seint makeup is cream, you don’t have to worry about it not making it through security. There’s no need to pack it any differently than in its custom palette.

Why Seint Makeup is the Best Makeup for Traveling

Seint makeup is seriously THE BEST makeup to travel with! Why?? Let me break it down:

  • It’s cream makeup so it won’t spill and make a mess!
  • It’s TSA approved so you don’t have to risk losing it in your luggage, carry it on the plane with you!
  • It fits everything you need (minus mascara) in a custom palette: foundation, concealer, contour, bronzer, blush, illuminator, powder, lipstick, eyeshadow, brow color, brow wax, eyeliner, lip conditioner….all of it in one place!
  • It saves space! Since everything fits into one compact, you don’t have a bulky makeup bag with a ton of clutter.
  • Each palette comes with a mirror so you can do your makeup on the go or near a window to apply with natural lighting.

What is a Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

A travel capsule wardrobe is a small, curated collection of clothing that mixes and matches easily to create multiple outfits. It’s perfect for packing light while staying stylish. The purpose is to pack less so if you can fit everything into a carry-on suitcase and a personal item, that’s great!

Why a Capsule Wardrobe Works So Well for Travel

It can be tricky lugging around tons of bags on your trips. They can be heavy and bulky and it can cause space issues in rental cars and ride shares. Plus, do you really need everything that you packed?! Most likely, no. Taking time before any vacation to strategically plan your outfits and pack lightly will help you travel with less stress and less baggage!

As a woman that has traveled the world with my family of 6, I can attest that traveling with less bags is so much easier! In the span of a year, our family visited 17 countries and 29 states. We traveled with 4 suitcases total and we each had a backpack. It was so much easier only having a few bags to carry through the airports and cities and it eased the decision fatigue when wondering what to wear.

Since that year of world travel, I have continued to take several global trips a year and I always try to just take a carry-on and a personal item. It’s much easier to maneuver through lines, escalators, elevators, and streets with fewer pieces of luggage in tow. Once I started packing a travel capsule wardrobe, I can’t look back!

How to Choose a Color Palette for Travel

The key for packing a capsule wardrobe is to start with a color palette. If you haven’t already gotten a color analysis done, you need to! It will help you determine what colors look best with your skin tone. It’s amazing to see the power of color in your life! Wearing the wrong color can make you look like you have dark circles under your eyes or a double chin! But wearing the right colors can help you look youthful and fresh. It’s wild! (check out my friends Tressie and Chandler for a color analysis!)

But back to packing a color palette. Choosing several colors of clothing will help you pack less because your tops and bottoms and accessories can mix and match easily. Start with a neutral base (like black, white, tan, or navy) and add 2-3 accent colors that you love and that work well together. Stick to pieces that all coordinate.

After I got my color analysis, it made it really easy to pick a few colors to pack my wardrobe around. Look at the pieces you have in your closet and pick colors that go well together. If you have a rainbow of colors in your suitcase, you’ll end up packing a ton of clothes that can only be worn once.

How to Maximize Outfits with Minimal Pieces

Once you have a color palette picked out, pack pieces that are versatile. You want to be able to wear something more than once. My personal rule is I don’t pack it unless it can be worn at least 3 different ways. For instance, pick a skirt that can be worn with several different tops. Pick shoes that can be worn with several different outfits.

With a color palette and versatile pieces, you will pack a lot less clothing but have a lot of outfit options between the individual pieces. You want everything to mix and match well. This way will help you maximize outfits with minimal pieces.

Travel-Friendly Fabrics & Packing Tips

If you want to avoid packing an iron or steamer (because those can take up a lot of space!) then there are some fabrics that are great for traveling. Believe it or not, wool is an amazing fabric to wear year round! It can keep you cool when it’s warm outside and warm when it’s cool outside. It is also breathable and odor resistant so you can wear something many times without having to wash it.

My favorite wool brands to purchase from are WoolX and Wool&. I love packing wool leggings, wool t-shirts, and wool dresses when I travel.

In the warm months, linen is a great fabric to pack. It’s lightweight and breathable but it can wrinkle easily. So here’s a trick for you! Hang up your linen clothing on a hanger in the bathroom while you shower. The steam from the shower will help release the wrinkles. You can also spray water on it and let it air dry. My favorite place to buy linen is NotPerfectLinen.

Don’t Forget These Accessories

Accessories are a great way to spice up any look! You can wear the same dress but switch up the accessories to completely change the look. Here are some accessories you’ll want to pack:

  • belts
  • hats
  • scarves
  • jewelry- earrings, bracelets, rings, necklaces
  • purses
  • shoes
  • makeup…yes, makeup! Your eyeshadow, blush, and lipstick can add the perfect pop to any outfit.

Capsule Wardrobe Mistakes to Avoid

When creating your capsule wardrobe, avoid these mistakes:

  • Don’t forget to check the weather! You can’t control the weather but you can do a little research and get a good idea of what the weather will mostly be like on your trip. There’s no need to pack a heavy coat if the weather will be warm. Pack only what you need.
  • Don’t take into consideration what activities you’re doing on the trip. Pack clothing items that you will actually use. You don’t need to pack exercise clothing if you have no plans to exercise. Same with a swimsuit. Consider the activities you’ll be doing and pack accordingly.
  • Don’t pack more than you need! We all get caught up in the “what if” train of thought and that can lead to packing way too many things! Be prepared, but don’t pack unnecessary things.

Sample Travel Capsule Outfit Plan

This summer I will be going on a 2 week trip to Europe and I only plan to take a carry-on and a personal item. When I plan my travel capsule wardrobe, I like to use Canva to map out what clothing items I’ll take. It allows me to visually see the color scheme, the versatile pieces, and outfits I can create with all the items. Here is a sample of what I will be packing on my trip:

Take note that I am packing a variety of tops, bottoms, dresses, and accessories that can easily be mixed and matched. This will give me a lot of outfit combinations! And bonus, it will all fit into a carry-on.

What Bags are Good for a Travel Capsule Wardrobe?

The bags you travel with are so important! You want your bags and luggage to be high quality, versatile, and space saving. Here are some bags I never travel without:

  • Toiletry bag– I LOVE this bag! It holds all my toiletry items and then some! It hangs on a hook to make it easy to access. It’s a must!!
  • Personal bag– This is the perfect size for a personal carry-on item! I like to fit my toiletry bag, makeup bag, skincare products, computer, chargers, book, and snacks in this bag. It fits well under the airplane seat and it has lots of pockets to keep you organized. AND…it has a cool side pocket that allows you to secure it to your suitcase.
  • Carry-on Suitcase– This is the BEST suitcase!! It’s the perfect size, the wheels move like butter, it has a lock, and fits great with the personal item bag. The quality is amazing and you can’t beat the price!
  • Sapahn purse– I’m not exaggerating when I say that Sapahn purses are the BEST around! They’re handmade in Thailand, leather, and have the best style and color selection. I have too many of their purses to count!! All of their purses are the perfect addition to any travel outfit. Check out the best of their purses to travel with, but my personal travel faves are the Dominique, Ada, Audrey, and Sarah Ann. Save 15% with this Sapahn discount code: JOELLEN15
  • Packing Cubes– These are a great way to keep your things organized!

Final Thoughts: Pack Less, Stress Less, Glow More

Take time before you travel to plan. Pick a color scheme, pack versatile pieces, look at the weather, plan your activities. This planning will lead to less stress and less wasted space! If you want to take your planning a little further, take time to put outfits together and try them on. Then snap a picture and save them in a an album on your phone so you can quickly refer to the pictures when you want to remember what to wear.

Planning before your trip will help you enjoy your time and glow more! Now that you have amazing outfits planned, don’t forget to take pictures so you can remember the amazing memories you’ll make!
