Best Travel Outfits for Women Over 40: Comfortable, Polished, and Easy to Pack

Let me tell you about the time I showed up to a beautiful rooftop dinner in Positano wearing the same linen dress I had been sightseeing in all day. Was it ideal? No. Was it still a great outfit because I had packed intentionally and that dress could genuinely do both? Yes. And that is the entire philosophy behind this post.

After traveling to over 40 countries and spending years living in Italy and New Zealand, I’ve learned exactly what works and what absolutely does not when it comes to packing clothes for a trip. I’ve sweated through the wrong fabrics in the wrong heat. I’ve limped through ancient cobblestone streets in adorable but completely impractical shoes. I’ve checked bags full of outfits I never wore and come home wishing I had packed half as much and twice as intentionally.

So here it is…my complete guide to the best travel outfits for women over 40, organized by travel scenario so you know exactly what to wear for every moment of your trip. We’re talking airport outfits, sightseeing looks, dinner outfits, beach and resort days, active adventure days, and even a working-while-traveling outfit for all my fellow women who never fully unplug.

Every outfit formula is practical, polished, and packable. Every piece earns its spot in your carry-on. And all my actual product favorites are linked throughout because I know you are going to ask anyway. Let’s get into it!

How to Build the Perfect Travel Wardrobe for Women Over 40

Here’s what I want you to remember as you start pulling things out of your closet and wondering what actually makes the cut: the best travel outfit is the one you feel amazing in and can wear more than once. Period.

The best travel outfits for women over 40 are not about packing more. They’re about packing smarter…choosing pieces that do double duty, fabrics that actually behave in heat and humidity, and shoes you could wear all day without thinking about them. When your outfits work that hard for you, traveling becomes effortless. And effortless is exactly how travel should feel.

I’ve linked everything I recommend in the shop section below…all my Quince favorites, my WoolX pieces (use code JOELLEN10 for 10% off), my Sapahn bags (use code JOELLEN15 for 15% off), and my full Amazon and LTK storefronts. Everything you see me wearing in my travel content lives in one of those places.

And if you want to see how all of these pieces actually pack into a carry-on…I’ve linked my full Europe packing video and my outfit capsule video below. Because seeing it is always more helpful than reading it.

Pack light. Dress intentionally. Show up fully. You were made for this kind of beautiful.

The Golden Rules of Packing Outfits for Women Over 40

After over 40 countries and four years living abroad, here are the packing rules I genuinely live by:

  • Every piece needs to work with at least three other things in your bag. If it only goes with one outfit, leave it home.
  • Quality beats quantity every single time. One beautiful linen dress you feel amazing in is worth more than five mediocre pieces you feel okay in.
  • Comfort is non-negotiable. If you wouldn’t walk five miles in it at home, you will not magically want to walk five miles in it in Florence. Pack things you can actually move in.
  • Wrinkle-resistant fabrics are your best friends. Linen, merino wool, and jersey knits travel beautifully. Silk and cotton poplin do not.
  • Shoes deserve as much thought as clothes. Two great pairs will take you further than five okay pairs. Pack accordingly.

And the rule I wish someone had told me before my first trip to Italy: pack half of what you think you need. You will still have too much. And you’ll thank yourself every single time you have to carry it up a flight of stairs.

The Best Fabrics for Travel — What to Look For and What to Avoid

Fabric choice is everything when you’re traveling, especially in hot weather. Here’s my honest breakdown:

✅ PACK THESE:

  • Linen: breathable, beautiful, gets better with wear. My number one travel fabric for hot weather destinations.
  • Merino wool: sounds counterintuitive but merino regulates temperature, resists odor, and packs down tiny. I love WoolX for this. Use code JOELLEN10 for 10% off! [add WoolX link]
  • Cotton jersey: comfortable, packable, and works for everything from sightseeing to casual dinners.
  • Bamboo blends: lightweight, breathable, and incredibly soft against skin.

❌ LEAVE THESE HOME:

  • Heavy denim: it doesn’t breathe, it doesn’t pack small, and it takes forever to dry. Hard pass.
  • Thick polyester: you’ll sweat in ways you didn’t know were possible.
  • Anything that wrinkles at the thought of being folded…silk charmeuse, cotton poplin, stiff blazers. Not worth the stress.
  • Anything that only works in one outfit…see golden rules above.

The Quince linen pieces are some of my absolute favorites for travel…quality feels, beautiful look, and incredibly affordable.

The Airport Outfit — Comfortable, Pulled Together, and TSA Ready

Can we talk about the airport outfit for a second? Because I’ve seen women show up to the airport in full pajamas and I’ve seen women show up in heels and a blazer and neither extreme is serving anyone.

The goal of the airport outfit is this: comfortable enough to sleep in on a long flight, put together enough to feel like yourself when you land, and easy enough to get through security without doing a full costume change at the conveyor belt. It’s a very specific brief and once you nail it, travel days become so much more enjoyable.

After years of long-haul flights…including some with four kids in tow…here’s exactly what I reach for every single time.

The Airport Outfit Formula

The formula that never fails me:

  • One comfortable base layer: a soft tee, a fitted tank, or a lightweight long-sleeve depending on the season. Something you could sleep in but would not be embarrassed to be photographed in.
  • One easy bottom: wide leg pants, joggers that look polished, or a comfortable maxi skirt. Nothing tight or restrictive. You’ll thank yourself at hour six.
  • One layer: a cardigan, denim jacket, or lightweight zip. Planes are cold. Always.
  • A crossbody bag or tote that fits under the seat: your personal item should be organized enough that you can find your passport, earbuds, and snacks without unpacking the whole thing at security.

My airport outfit staples:

The Best Travel Shoes for the Airport

Slip-ons. Or easy to put on and take off. This is not negotiable.

You’ll thank me when you are at security and the woman in front of you is untying knee-high lace-up boots while the line backs up behind her. Slip-on sneakers or loafers that look put together and feel like clouds are a great airport shoe. Make sure they are shoes you can actually walk long distances in…airport terminals are deceptively large and delays are always possible.

The Sightseeing Outfit — Look Good on Your Feet All Day

Sightseeing days are where most packing lists fall apart. You think you want to look cute and you pack something that looks great for the first twenty minutes and then reality hits…the heat, the walking, the cobblestones, the four-hour museum, the spontaneous lunch at a café you weren’t planning for…and suddenly that outfit that looked adorable in your hotel mirror is working very hard against you.

I’ve been there. I wore the wrong shoes to the Vatican once and it wasn’t fun.

The perfect sightseeing outfit for women over 40 is comfortable enough to walk for hours, polished enough to pop into a café or a church without feeling underdressed, and simple enough that it doesn’t require constant adjusting. Here is the formula.

The Sightseeing Outfit Formula

The formula I use for every sightseeing day:

  • A lightweight dress or linen trousers + a simple top: this combination is endlessly versatile, looks polished without trying, and transitions from morning sightseeing to afternoon gelato to evening aperitivo without skipping a beat.
  • A scarf or sarong in your bag: for church visits, an unexpected beach, or just adding a layer of style to a simple outfit. It weighs almost nothing and does five jobs.
  • A crossbody bag: hands free, secure, and stylish. Essential.
  • SPF and a lip with some color: because looking polished on a sightseeing day is more about skin and a little makeup than anything else.

Sightseeing Shoes — The Most Important Decision You Will Make

I’ll say this once and then I’ll say it again because it needs to be said twice: your sightseeing shoes will make or break your trip.

I’ve walked the streets of Rome, Florence, Venice, Athens, and dozens of other cities on ancient, uneven, cobblestone surfaces that are beautiful and absolutely ruthless on your feet. I lived in Italy for two years. I know things.

Here’s what you actually need for sightseeing: leather walking sandals with arch support for warm weather destinations, comfortable supportive sneakers for longer days and cooler climates, and enough sense to leave the cute-but-painful options at home.

Invest in a great pair of leather sandals. They’ll look beautiful, feel good, and go with everything in your bag. It is one of the best travel purchases you will ever make.

The Travel Dinner Outfit — Polished Without Overpacking

Dinner outfits are where I see women overpack the most. They bring three different dresses “just for evenings” and then wear the same maxi dress they wore for sightseeing to every dinner anyway because it looked great and felt comfortable and honestly nobody at that rooftop restaurant in Florence was judging.

True story. I did this. Zero regrets.

The key to the perfect travel dinner outfit isn’t having a separate “dinner wardrobe”…it’s choosing pieces during the day that transition beautifully to evening with minimal effort. A good accessory, a good bag, and a lip color change can take a linen dress from a morning museum to a candlelit dinner without a single outfit change. That is the goal.

The Travel Dinner Outfit Formula

The travel dinner outfit formula is simpler than you think:

  • One elevated piece that transitions from day to evening: a maxi dress, a wrap dress, or a silk-blend top with linen trousers. Something that looks intentionally dressed up even if you wore it all day.
  • Swap your day bag for something smaller and more evening-appropriate.
  • Add a little jewelry: one pair of earrings changes everything.
  • Do a quick lip refresh: a lip liner and gloss takes two minutes and immediately makes any outfit feel more done.
  • Flat dressy sandals: beautiful, Italian street-approved, and guaranteed to last the whole dinner without turning into a problem.

The Bag That Elevates Every Dinner Outfit

Here’s something I learned from two years of living in Italy: Italians notice your bag. And one quality leather bag will do more for your evening outfit than three mediocre ones ever could.

I’m a huge fan of Sapahn bags for travel. They’re beautiful, quality leather, the perfect size for an evening out, and the kind of bag that works with everything from a casual lunch to a candlelit dinner. They’re the kind of purchase you make once and use for years. And you can change the look of the bag by simply changing out the bag strap. Bring one purse but get 4 different bags! A small leather crossbody or a simple clutch is all you need for an evening out…your phone, your card, your lip gloss, and your room key. Everything else can stay at the hotel.

The Beach and Resort Outfit — Effortless and Elegant

Beach days are some of my favorite days to dress for because the formula is genuinely simple and the margin for error is very small. You need a swimsuit that fits and flatters, a coverup that takes you from sand to street, sandals that can handle both, and a bag that can get sandy without you losing sleep over it.

That’s it. Four pieces. Maximum.

After years of beach days across multiple countries…the Amalfi Coast, Maui, Mexico, the Greek islands, New Zealand, and plenty of Arizona lakeside days closer to home…here’s the beach and resort outfit formula I always come back to.

The Beach Outfit Formula

The four-piece beach formula that works every time:

  • A swimsuit that makes you feel great: not the one you have been meaning to replace for three summers. The one that actually fits and makes you feel confident. For beach days abroad you will be living in your swimsuit so this matters.
  • A versatile coverup: a lightweight maxi dress, a linen button-down, or a sarong that works as both a coverup and a wrap. Ideally something that looks cute enough to walk into a beachside café without feeling like you forgot to get dressed.
  • Comfortable flat sandals: nothing you love too much to get sandy.
  • A beach bag: a tote or a straw bag that holds your sunscreen, your book, your water bottle, and your smaller crossbody for when you leave the beach and need to transition.

My beach outfit favorites:

Beach to Lunch — How to Transition Without Changing

The beach to lunch transition is one of the great art forms of vacation dressing and it is simpler than most women make it.

Throw your button-down or dress coverup over your swimsuit. Switch your beach sandals for your slightly nicer flat sandals if you have them. Tie your hair up or shake it out depending on how you feel. Add a pair of sunglasses and your crossbody bag. That’s it. You’re ready for lunch.

The trick is having a coverup that genuinely looks like an outfit rather than something you grabbed on the way off the beach. A beautiful white linen button-down worn open over a swimsuit with flat sandals looks completely intentional. A faded beach coverup does not. The investment in one beautiful coverup pays off every single beach day of the trip.

The Active Day Outfit — For Hiking, Walking Tours, and Adventure

Not every travel day is a leisurely stroll through a piazza. Some of them involve hiking to the top of Arizona’s highest peak at 12,633 feet. Some involve via ferrata courses on the side of a Swiss mountain. Some are long walking tours where you cover eight miles before lunch and wonder what you were thinking when you agreed to this.

I’ve done all of these things. Sometimes on the same trip. And what I wear on those days matters significantly more than what I wear on a lazy beach day.

Active travel days require clothing that actually performs…that moves with your body, regulates your temperature, dries quickly if you sweat, and does not fall apart on a mountainside. Here is exactly what I reach for.

The Active Day Outfit Formula

The formula for any active travel day:

  • A performance base layer: a sports bra and biker shorts, or a fitted athletic tee and leggings. Something that moves well, wicks moisture, and does not chafe over miles of terrain.
  • A lightweight layer for changing temperatures: if you’re hiking at elevation, temperatures drop fast. A packable quarter-zip or windbreaker that stuffs into your pack is worth every inch of bag space.
  • Performance socks: do not underestimate the power of a good sock on a long hiking day.
  • The right shoes for the activity: more on that below.

I am obsessed with WoolX for active travel days. Merino wool sounds like the last thing you’d want to work out in but it is genuinely the most temperature-regulating, odor-resistant, comfortable activewear I have found. The sports bra and biker shorts are my go-to for hiking days. Use code JOELLEN10 for 10% off!

The Best Shoes for Active Travel Days

The shoes you wear on an active travel day can genuinely make or break the experience. I learned this hiking Mt. Humphreys in Arizona…at 12,633 feet the terrain is rocky, uneven, and absolutely unforgiving. And when I was in Switzerland doing a via ferrata course on the side of a mountain, I was incredibly grateful I had packed proper shoes.

For active travel days you need genuine support. Not fashion sneakers dressed up as athletic shoes. Real support, real grip, real protection.

Trail running shoes or light hiking shoes are ideal for most active travel scenarios…they handle everything from long walking tours on uneven city streets to actual trail hiking without requiring you to pack an additional pair of dedicated hiking boots.

If you’re doing serious hiking with elevation gain, consider packing actual hiking boots or trail shoes with ankle support. Your knees will thank you at the end of the day.

These are the hiking shoes I have and love!
