How to Layer Products Correctly in Your 40s and 50s

Okay, let’s be real…skincare gets a little more complicated once we hit our 40s and 50s. Suddenly, it’s not just what you use, but how you use it. If you’ve ever stood in front of the mirror holding a serum in one hand and a moisturizer in the other thinking, “Wait… which goes first??” you’re not alone. Skincare layering for mature skin is the secret sauce that makes your products actually work together instead of fighting each other. And once you nail the order, you’ll notice your skin looking more hydrated, firmer, and glowier than ever.

FAQs

  • How should I layer skincare at 40 (or 50)? Think of it like getting dressed…lightest to heaviest! Start with a gentle cleanser, toner, then apply your thinnest, most active products first (like serums), followed by moisturizer. This way, each layer can actually do its job instead of sitting on top of the wrong product.
  • What order should I apply products for mature skin? Cleanser → Toner → Serum → Eye Cream → Moisturizer. At night, you can add in your retinol or treatment products before moisturizing.
  • Do I really need a serum in my 40s/50s? Yep, friend…you do! Serums are like your skincare “power players.” They’re packed with concentrated active ingredients (like vitamin C or hyaluronic acid) that target fine lines, dryness, and dullness more effectively than moisturizer alone.
  • Can I use retinol and vitamin C together? They’re both amazing for mature skin, but it’s usually best not to use them at the same time. Use vitamin C in the morning to brighten and protect, and retinol at night to repair and smooth.
  • How do I know if I’m using too many products? If your skin feels irritated, red, or flaky, that’s your skin waving a little SOS flag. You don’t need 12 steps…just the right 3–5 steps for your skin. Consistency is more important than cramming your counter full of products.

Step-by-Step: The Correct Order for Skincare Products

When it comes to skincare layering for mature skin, think of it like getting dressed…lightest to heaviest! Start with a gentle cleanser, toner, then apply your thinnest, most active products first (like serums), followed by moisturizer. This way, each layer can actually do its job instead of sitting on top of the wrong product. Let’s break it down even more:

  • Cleanse (first and second cleanse…read more about double cleansing!)
  • Toner
  • Mask (apply a mask 1-2 times a week for extra TLC. Read about the best masks for mature skin!)
  • Serum
  • Elixir (retinol) *pro tip! Combine your serum and retinol together and apply to your skin at the same time for maximum penetration benefits.
  • Eye elixir and/or eye cream
  • Moisturizer (face cream)

Now, do you have to do ALL of these steps? No. A good simple skincare routine consists of cleansing, toning, and moisturizing. But if you want to see better results or you want to target specific things on your skin, the adding in a mask, serum, and/or retinol will help your skin more.

How to Layer Botanical Serums and Light Makeup

At night, I like to slather my face like a glazed donut! But in the morning, I keep my skincare routine simple. The more products you put on your face before applying your makeup will affect the way your makeup applies, blends, and stays all day. Think less is more.

Here is a simple skincare routine you can follow for your morning routine:

Let your skincare absorb well into your skin for a good 5-10 minutes before applying your makeup. Then, apply your favorite base. I LOVE skin tint for mature skin! It’s hydrating, it’s light, it provides great coverage, and it’s good for your skin. I also love to combine my skin tint with cream makeup. Again, this is hydrating for mature skin!

A big mistake women over 40 make is wearing too thick and too drying of makeup. This ends up enhancing fine lines and wrinkles and makes us look older! Using light and hydrating makeup will help give our skin a healthy glow.

Using a skin tint to even out your skin tone and then cream makeup to add dimension to your face will help you get a beautiful healthy glow! Here’s what I use and recommend:
