What Should You Do If Your Skin is Purging?
If you think your skin is going through a purging process, how can you lessen the impact?? Your skin should start to normalize within 2-6 weeks of using new products. In the meantime, here are 5 tips you can try to keep your skin calm:
- Cut back on how often you use certain products or cut certain products out until your skin has adjusted. For instance, if you notice that your skin started freaking out when you started using an exfoliant, stop using it for a few weeks. Once your skin has healed, slowly reintroduce it back into your routine. Start with once a week and see how your skin does.
- Get back to the basics. If you are using a bunch of skincare products, keep it simple. Just cleanse, tone, and moisturize for a week and let your skin calm down.
- Avoid picking at your face! I know…it’s hard not to pop those pimples or scratch away those bumps. But messing around with them will only make them worse. Be patient.
- Drink plenty of water and stayed hydrated.
- Change your pillowcase at least once a week! And same with your towel. Using dirty fabric will only exacerbate the problem.
Is It Skin Purging or a Breakout??
To distinguish between purging and breakouts, look at the ingredients of the products you are using. If one or more include acids, retinol, or vitamin A, it is most likely purging.
Are your breakouts where they normally occur? Then it’s most likely a breakout.
Keep track of how long it takes your breakouts to heal. If you don’t notice improvement in 2-6 weeks, then discontinue use of that product to see how your skin does.
How to Avoid a Skin Purge
Skin purges usually happen when you are trying new skincare products. To try to avoid your skin reacting badly to new products, it’s best to introduce them slowly into your skincare routine. Instead of starting a completely new routine all at once, start small by just switching out your cleanser. Let your skin adjust and then introduce another product like a moisturizer. Let a few days to a week go between each new product that you introduce into your routine.
Going slow will help prevent your skin from purging. It’s hard to be patient, but it will be worth it overall for your skin to have time to adjust to new products.
If you notice that your skin reacts crazy when you start using a certain product, then back off of that particular product. Use it less often and let your skin get used to it.
Sometimes we want quick results! But when working with our skin, we have to be patient and gentle. When using the right products and using them consistently, you can achieve happy, healthy, and glowy skin!
