How to Care for Cashmere

How is Cashmere Made?

Cashmere comes from goat’s hair. It comes from the soft undercoat of the goat. The fiber is perfect for keeping you warm in the winter months! The production of cashmere can be controversial in that some manufacturers don’t follow the best practices. But when you can find a brand that follows ethical guidelines, it’s a great fabric to wear!

How to Care for Cashmere

  • How to wash cashmere: The best way to care for your cashmere is to hand wash it, inside out with a gentle detergent like this one HERE or baby shampoo with lukewarm water. Swirl the fabric around in the water and then let it soak in the water for up to 30 minutes before gently rinsing it. Don’t wring it because it will stretch out the fibers. Squish the water out by forming it into a ball. If you don’t want to clean it yourself, you can take it to a dry cleaner to be professionally cleaned.
  • How to dry cashmere: To dry your cashmere carefully, simply lay it flat to dry on a clean towel. Hanging it will stretch it out.
  • How to get rid of wrinkles in cashmere: The best way to get rid of wrinkles in cashmere is to steam the fabric. This is a great steamer option HERE. You can also spritz it with water and let it dry. If you can’t do either option, then you can use an iron on cool setting and very lightly press it.
  • How to store cashmere: Never hang your cashmere pieces because they will stretch out. Fold your cashmere and store in a drawer or box with some type of moth repellent (cedar wood, lavender, cloves, rosemary). I have these cedar blocks HERE and they work great!
  • How to care for pilling: If you notice some pilling on your cashmere pieces, you can either use a cashmere comb like this one HERE or a sweater defuzzer. This defuzzer HERE works great!!
