Why Everyday Makeup Changes After 40
Makeup in your 20s was all about experimenting…bold colors, heavy powders, and products that didn’t have to do much except look cute for a few hours. But over 40? Your skin changes and so should your makeup.
As we age, our skin naturally loses collagen, becomes drier, and may show more texture or fine lines. That means products that once worked…might suddenly feel heavy, cakey, or just not flattering anymore.
The good news? You don’t need more makeup…you just need better makeup. Lighter formulas, cream textures, and hydrating ingredients become your best friends. Think of it less like “covering up” and more like “enhancing what’s already beautiful.”
It’s not about doing more…it’s about doing less, better. And when you choose products that work with your skin, your everyday makeup routine becomes quicker, easier, and way more effective.
What to Look for in Everyday Makeup Over 40
When it comes to everyday makeup over 40, your products should work with your skin…not against it. The goal isn’t to hide or overcorrect, but to enhance your natural features in a way that feels light, fresh, and effortless.
Here’s what to prioritize:
1. Cream-Based Formulas
Powders can settle into fine lines and highlight dryness. Creams, on the other hand, blend beautifully, add moisture, and create a skin-like finish that moves with you throughout the day.
2. Hydrating Ingredients
Look for makeup that includes nourishing ingredients like plant oils, butters, or antioxidants. Mature skin thrives with formulas that double as skincare…keeping your glow intact all day.
3. Sheer to Buildable Coverage
Instead of full-coverage foundation, opt for lightweight tints or concealers that even out your skin tone without masking it. You want your skin to still look like skin.
4. Natural-Looking Contour + Blush
A little sculpting and color can bring life and lift back to the face. Choose soft, blendable shades that flatter your skin tone and give a healthy flush.
5. Multipurpose Products
Time is precious. Products that can double as blush, lip color, or eyeshadow keep your routine quick and your makeup bag simple.
Why I Love Olive Rose for Mature Skin
Olive Rose isn’t just pretty makeup…it’s smart makeup that understands the needs of mature skin. As someone in my 40s, I’m done using products that leave me feeling overly made up. I want makeup that feels good, looks natural, and actually supports my skin…and Olive Rose delivers on all of that.
The formulas are hydrating, blendable, and made with clean ingredients, which means they don’t sit in fine lines or dry out your skin by noon. Everything is designed to enhance your features, not cover them…and there’s a softness to the pigments that makes them incredibly flattering on midlife skin.
What I especially love? The ease. These products apply and blend like butter! I can contour, add blush, swipe on some lip butter and mascara and I feel instantly polished without trying too hard.

My Go-To Olive Rose Products for a 5 Minute Look
Olive Rose has a full makeup line ranging from primer to setting spray and everything in between. If you want a quick everyday makeup look that takes you about 5 minutes, then here’s what you need:
These products will help you achieve a natural and glowy everyday makeup look over 40 that will help you look more youthful!

Step-by-Step: My Quick Everyday Makeup Routine
Here’s an easy step-by-step everyday makeup routine that you can do it 5 minutes to look and feel great:
- Apply 1-2 squirts of skin tint to your face. You can apply it with your fingers, a damp makeup sponge, or a brush.
- Apply contour on your cheekbones, along your hairline on your forehead, and along your jawline. Blend the contour on your cheekbones and forehead up and the contour on your jawline down. (you can also add some contour to your eyelids for a quick eyeshadow look)
- Apply blush on your cheekbone and blend it into your contour. (you can also add some blush to your eyelids for a quick eyeshadow look)
- Take a small amount of concealer on the back of your hand and the Bright Brush and apply on the darkest parts of your under eye area. Use the bigger side of the brush to blend.
- Squirt your face 1-3 times to set your makeup.
- Apply mascara to your lashes.
- Finish the look off with lip balm.
Seint Makeup Brushes for Best Application
A great makeup brush is KEY for a great makeup application! You’re over 40 now, so you deserve better brushes to get better results. Here are my favorite Seint makeup brushes that work beautifully with Olive Rose makeup:
- Blush + Bronzer Brush– Yes, I know this brush is made for blush and bronzer, but it works so so good for applying skin tint. The fluffy and dense bristles help give you an even coverage. You can swipe or stipple to apply the skin tint all over your face.
- Detail Brush– You will not find a better brush for contouring!! The dense flat edges of this brush hug the cheekbone to perfection and blend the contour beautifully to give you a natural sculpted look.
- Shape Brush– I love this brush for blush! It’s the perfect size and shape to add a pretty flush to your cheeks.
- Bright Brush– This brush is great for applying concealer. Just use a tiny bit of concealer and use the smaller end of the brush to apply and the larger end of the brush to blend.

Tips for Textured Skin
Textured skin is completely normal…pores, fine lines, and uneven tone are part of life (especially after 40). The goal isn’t to erase texture, but to work with it so your makeup looks smooth, fresh, and natural. Here are a few tips that really help:
1. Focus on Skincare First
Makeup sits better on well-prepped skin. Use gentle exfoliation 1–2 times a week to keep skin smooth, and follow with deeply hydrating products. Think: serums, face oils, and barrier-supporting creams. Waterless skincare for aging skin, like Oliveda, is amazing for this. Check out my morning skincare routine.
2. Use a Lightweight, Hydrating Base
Skip heavy foundations that cling to texture. Instead, use a light, dewy tint or skin-enhancing base that evens tone without emphasizing problem areas. Bonus: it lets your natural glow show through.
3. Avoid Setting Powder…Or Use Very Sparingly
Powder can easily exaggerate fine lines and texture. If you need to set your makeup, use a tiny amount only in areas that get oily, like the T-zone.
4. Embrace the Glow
Matte finishes can make textured skin look flat or dry. A bit of natural radiance, especially on the high points of your face, adds life and dimension without drawing attention to imperfections.
Everyday Makeup Over 40: What to Avoid
Let’s be real…makeup in our 40s isn’t about rules, it’s about what actually works. But if your products are starting to feel off, heavy, or like they’re aging you instead of helping you glow, here are a few things worth ditching:
1. Heavy, Matte Foundations
Full-coverage, matte formulas can cling to dry patches and settle into fine lines, making skin look older. Opt for lightweight, hydrating tints that even out your tone while letting your skin breathe.
2. Powder Overload
Too much powder can instantly flatten your features and emphasize texture. A light dusting in oily areas is fine, but cream products usually give a more natural, radiant finish.
3. Harsh Eyeliner
Lining your entire eye (especially the lower lash line) with black liner can make eyes look smaller and more tired. Try a softer shade like brown, gray, or taupe, and focus on lifting the outer corners.
4. Skipping Blush
As we lose volume in our face, adding warmth and color back in becomes key. A cream blush on the apples of your cheeks can instantly lift and freshen your look.
5. Shimmery Eyeshadow in the Wrong Places
A little glow on the lids can be pretty, but shimmer on textured areas (like the brow bone or creases) can accentuate lines. Stick to soft, flattering finishes that enhance without overwhelming.

Olive Rose makes it easy to build a routine that feels light, looks fresh, and lets your skin breathe. Whether you’re heading to carpool or lunch date, your makeup should work with you…not against you. Here’s to glow that fits your season.
