In fact, some of the most flattering eye looks…especially for women over 40…come from simple techniques and soft blending that enhance the eyes instead of overpowering them.
Whether you want a quick everyday look or you’re just trying to understand where eyeshadow is actually supposed to go, this beginner-friendly eyeshadow tutorial will help break it down step-by-step. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s learning how to create soft definition, brighten the eyes, and feel more confident applying makeup in a way that works for your features and eye shape.
What You Need for Eyeshadow Tutorial for Beginners
In order to get a great eyeshadow look, it really does matter what tools you have! But that doesn’t mean you have to have a lot of them! Just have a few in your collection that will work hard for you and that will give you the look you want. My absolute favorite eyeshadow brushes are the Eyeshadow Brush and the Smudge Brush. Both are so great and so easy to use. With just those eyeshadow brushes, you can get so many simple looks!
Along with good tools, you will also need quality eyeshadow. Not the cheap dollar store eyeshadow that doesn’t have any pigment. I’m talking high quality color that will last forever and that will give your eyelids the pop they need! Beginner Eyeshadow Techniques
When it comes to beginner eyeshadow techniques, there are a few methods to play around with. Here are the easiest to begin with:
- Wash Method
- Windshield Wiper Method
- Brightener Method
- Ombre Method
Wash Method
If you have a little bit of time or if you’re a simple gal or if you only have one eyeshadow shade you love or you just don’t like a lot of fuss, then the wash method will be your friend! With this method, you only need one eyeshadow color and an eyeshadow brush. That’s it.
Take your eyeshadow color and your brush and apply the color on most of your eyelid. Start at your lash line and go until your eyeball ends into its socket. Just wash that color over the lid to give it some nice color. And that’s it. Seriously. Simply swipe some color on and be done. This will give your eyelids some nice color without any fuss. Boom.
Windshield Wiper Method
If you have a little more time or if you want a little more dimension or if you have 2 colors you want to use, then grab a second darker eyeshadow color. After you do the wash method, take the larger end of your brush and apply the darker eyeshadow color right where your eyeball ends and your bone begins. Right in that socket. Simply take the brush and use a windshield wiping motion back and forth to add dimension.
The more your swipe, the more blended it will be. Keep doing it and adding color until you’ve achieved the look you want.
Crease Method
This method is a little more involved, but still totally doable! Take a medium shade and apply it as the wash method all over your eyelid. Then take a little dark shade and apply it in and above your crease. If you want more definition, take a dark shade and apply it in a sideways v shape in the outer corner of your eye and blend it into the crease. Top the look off with a light color under your brow and on the inner corner of your eye.
Ombre Method
This is the coolest eyeshadow method because it looks like you’ve spend a ton of time but it is so stinkin easy! You need 4 colors, ranging in dark to light. Apply the darkest color on the outer part of your eye. Apply a medium color on the middle of your eye. Apply a light medium color on the inner part of your eye. Then blend, blend, blend! Top your look off with a light color under your brow and on the inner corner of your eye. Super easy!
Learning how to apply eyeshadow takes practice, but don’t let that discourage you. Even professional makeup artists started as beginners once. The more you practice blending, placement, and working with colors that flatter your eyes and skin tone, the easier it becomes. And honestly, simple usually looks the most beautiful…especially on mature skin.
Remember, makeup is meant to enhance your features, not hide them. You don’t need complicated techniques or dozens of products to create a soft, flattering eye look. A few good shades, gentle blending, and confidence in your application can go a long way.
And most importantly? Have fun with it. Makeup should feel creative, empowering, and enjoyable…not stressful.
