It might not be your face. It might be your makeup.

The foundation you loved at 25 may suddenly settle into fine lines. Your favorite powder might make your skin look dry. The concealer you’ve bought for 15 years may suddenly seem to emphasize the very things you’re trying to conceal.

And yet, what do most of us do? We keep buying the same products. Because they’re familiar. It’s what we’re used to.

There’s a famous saying that I love:

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

I think about this ALL the time when I work with women over 40. Our skin changes as we age, but so many of us are still using the same makeup products and formulas we used decades ago.

If you don’t like the result you’re getting, it’s okay to change what you’re doing. As a licensed esthetician and certified makeup artist in my 40s, I’ve become much more interested in makeup that doesn’t simply cover my skin.

I want makeup that works WITH my skin. And that’s why I’m so excited about one of the biggest shifts happening in beauty: skincare-infused makeup.

What Is Skincare-Infused Makeup?

For years, we treated skincare and makeup like two completely separate categories.

Skincare took care of your skin. Makeup covered it. But that’s changing.

Skincare-infused makeup…sometimes called a skincare-makeup hybrid…combines the cosmetic benefits we want from makeup with ingredients traditionally associated with skincare.

Think skin tints, foundations and other makeup products formulated with ingredients designed to help hydrate, nourish or support the feel and appearance of the skin. And this isn’t just a passing beauty fad.

Women are looking for beauty products that multitask, and makeup brands have responded with serum foundations, tinted moisturizers, balms, oils and other formulas that blur the line between skincare and makeup.

For women with mature skin, I think this shift makes SO much sense. Why should we expect less from something we’re putting on our skin all day?

Why Mature Skin May Need Different Makeup

Your skin at 45 isn’t the same skin you had at 25…and that’s not a bad thing. It’s just different.

As we age, skin can become drier and changes in texture, elasticity and fine lines can affect how makeup sits on the face. That’s why a thick, matte, full-coverage foundation that looked beautiful on you years ago might suddenly look heavy or emphasize texture.

Current makeup-artist recommendations for mature skin consistently favor lightweight, hydrating and flexible formulas over heavy layers that can cling to dry areas or settle into fine lines. So instead of asking:

“How do I cover my aging skin?”

I’d ask:

“How can my makeup work better with the skin I have now?”

That’s a completely different approach to beauty.

The Best Makeup for Mature Skin Starts With Hydration

If there’s one word I want women over 40 to remember when shopping for makeup, it’s:

HYDRATION.

Hydrated skin tends to look plumper, smoother and more luminous…and makeup generally looks better when the skin underneath it isn’t parched.

That’s why I look for makeup with a creamy, flexible texture and ingredients that support hydration rather than formulas that leave my skin feeling tight and dry.

Ingredients commonly found in today’s skincare-makeup hybrids include things like:

• Hyaluronic acid
• Glycerin
• Squalane
• Botanical oils and extracts
• Antioxidants
• Vitamins
• Other moisturizing and skin-conditioning ingredients

You still need a good skincare routine underneath your makeup…skincare-infused makeup isn’t a replacement for cleansing, moisturizing or SPF. Check out my tried and true simple morning skincare routine that works beautifully under makeup!

But I LOVE the idea of my makeup complementing the work I’m already doing with my skincare instead of fighting against it.

Makeup After 40 Should Enhance Your Skin, Not Hide It

This has probably been the biggest change in my own philosophy as a makeup artist…I don’t want to cover my skin anymore. I want to enhance it.

I still have texture. I have fine lines. I have discoloration. I have pores. I’m 40+. Of course I do!

My goal isn’t to erase every sign that I’ve lived more than four decades. My goal is to even my complexion, add warmth and color, define my features and look like the best version of myself.

That’s why I tend to prefer makeup that allows real skin to show through.

Less mask. More skin.

And that’s exactly where the beauty industry has been heading too.

Why I Love Olive Rose Makeup for Mature Skin

Not even:

Everyone says this is a great product.

Does it work for YOUR skin right now?

When choosing makeup for mature skin, I generally look for:

• Hydrating formulas that help skin feel comfortable rather than tight or dry.
• Lightweight, buildable coverage that allows you to control how much product you’re wearing.
• Creamy or flexible textures that move naturally with the skin.
• Skincare-infused formulas with ingredients that complement your skincare routine.
• Natural or luminous finishes that allow the complexion to retain dimension.

And most importantly: Makeup that makes you feel beautiful when you look in the mirror.

Is Skincare-Infused Makeup Worth It?

I think skincare-infused makeup makes especially good sense for mature skin…but with one important distinction:

Your makeup shouldn’t replace your skincare.

I still want you cleansing your face. I still want you using your serums and moisturizer. And PLEASE still protect your skin.

Think of skincare-infused makeup as another layer of support.

If I’m going to wear something on my face for hours, I personally love choosing formulas that offer more than pigment alone.

That’s one of the reasons this category has become such a big part of my own beauty philosophy. Take care of the skin first. Then choose makeup that works with it.

Do You Need to Change Your Makeup After 40?

Maybe.

Turning 40 doesn’t mean you have to throw everything in your makeup drawer away.

And I’m definitely not here to tell you that women over 40 “can’t” wear certain products. You can wear whatever makes you feel beautiful. But if you’ve been looking in the mirror thinking:

Why does my foundation look so dry?

Why is my concealer suddenly creasing?

Why does my makeup make my skin look older?

Why doesn’t my makeup look like it used to?

Don’t keep doing the exact same thing and hoping for a different result.

Experiment. Try a lighter formula. Try more hydration. Try cream instead of powder. Try a skin tint instead of heavy foundation. Try makeup that’s actually formulated with skincare benefits.

Your face isn’t failing you. Your makeup routine may simply need an update.

• What type of makeup is best for mature skin? There isn’t one formula that’s best for every woman, but mature skin often looks and feels better with lightweight, hydrating, buildable makeup rather than very heavy or drying formulas. Look for products that complement your skin type and don’t emphasize dryness or texture.
• Is skincare-infused makeup good for mature skin? It can be a great option. Skincare-makeup hybrids may include hydrating or skin-conditioning ingredients while still providing the color or coverage you’d expect from makeup. They’re especially appealing if dryness and dehydration have become bigger concerns as you’ve gotten older.
• Is skin tint or foundation better for mature skin? It depends on how much coverage you want. I love skin tint for a lightweight everyday look and foundation when I want additional coverage. The most important factors are the formula, finish and how the product behaves on your individual skin.
• Should mature skin avoid matte foundation? Not necessarily. There are no universal rules. However, if your skin is dry or your foundation is emphasizing fine lines and texture, experimenting with a more hydrating, natural or luminous finish may give you a result you prefer.
• Is cream makeup better for women over 40? Cream products can be beautiful on mature skin because they tend to create a soft, blendable finish. That doesn’t mean you have to eliminate powders completely. I prefer using powder strategically rather than automatically powdering the entire face.
• Does skincare-infused makeup replace skincare? No. Think of skincare-infused makeup as a complement to your skincare routine, not a replacement for it. Your daily skincare…including sunscreen…still matters.

The Best Makeup for Mature Skin Is Makeup That Evolves With You

If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this, it’s this:

You are allowed to change. Your skin has changed. Your face has changed. Your life has changed.

So why should you expect the makeup routine you created 20 years ago to serve you forever? There’s nothing wrong with aging, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting your makeup to help you feel fresh, polished and beautiful in the skin you’re in.

I’m not interested in helping women over 40 look 25 again. I want to help us look incredible at 40, 50, 60 and beyond. And sometimes that starts with something as simple as letting go of what’s no longer working.

So if your old makeup isn’t giving you the result you want anymore, try something new. Choose hydration. Choose skin-first formulas. Choose makeup that enhances rather than hides. Your mature skin deserves makeup designed for the woman you are now…not the woman you were two decades ago.

And let yourself still look like you. Because beauty after 40 isn’t about going backward. It’s about learning how to feel confident in the face you have today.

Bronzer is a warm brown that adds a sun-kissed glow to your face. Contour gives your face shape, shadow, and dimension. It helps chisel your cheekbones. Whereas bronzer will give you a tanned look.

Contouring Step by Step

Contrary to popular belief, contouring is for the everyday woman! Contouring is not just for actresses, models, and makeup artists. It’s for you. Yup….you! And when you have the right products and tools, you can easily master the contouring process in your little ol’ bathroom or car or office or gym….wherever you choose to put on your face. It’s that easy. Here’s how to contour….a step by step process so you can learn the tricks of the trade and feel extra confident in your skin!

What You Need to Contour

To contour properly, you will need a few things. You will need: contour, a brush, a makeup sponge. That’s it! But let’s quickly chat about what kind of contour you need… Contouring is meant to create shadow. So you want an ashy tone brown…not an orangey tone that makes you look fake. Where to Contour

Blend, Blend, Blend!

Once you apply your contour in the right places, make sure to blend! You want to look as natural as possible so blending is key! Blend with your brush first and then go back and blend for a flawless finish with your makeup sponge. To use your makeup sponge properly, run it under water and get it to double in size. Then squeeze all the excess water out until it is just slightly damp. Then dab, pat, stipple the sponge all over your face to pick up any excess makeup lines. And that’s it!

Maskcara 3D cream foundation is so perfect for any skin type…especially for dry skin! There are some tips and tricks to get the application just right. So, here’s your guide to Maskcara makeup for dry skin so you look your best!

Dry Skin Prep

It’s crucial to have a good skin care routine. Having healthy skin is key for makeup application. You don’t want to use makeup to coverup unhealthy skin. Get that skin looking and feeling great and then enhance it with makeup! So, make sure to cleanse, tone, and moisturize daily and apply a mask a few times a week. You can learn more about proper skin care HERE. Also, make sure to drink lots of water! It does wonders for the skin!

Since you have dry skin, it’s so important to apply a moisturizer before you put your makeup on. The Milk Cream is so healing for the skin! After you cleanse or rinse your face in the morning, apply moisturizer. Let it soak into your skin a good 5-10 minutes before you apply your makeup. If you apply it right after your moisturizer, your makeup won’t stay on your face very well.

Dry Skin Application

When it comes to applying your makeup, be gentle with your face so you don’t irritate it. A good makeup brush is key to great makeup application. You can read more about Maskcara makeup brushes HERE. The best way to apply the cream foundation to dry skin is to gently pat the product onto your face instead of swiping and causing flaky skin. The Bronzer + Blush Brush is so great at dabbing and blending foundation on (highlight, blush, and bronzer). And then you can use either the Detail HAC Brush or the Buffy Brush to apply your contour by dabbing the color in the right areas.

Dry Skin Finishing

Since you have dry skin, you most likely don’t need to set your makeup with powder, unless you prefer a very matte look. But, you will definitely want to set your makeup with a setting spray. You have two choices: Stay Setting Spray or Stay Out There Setting Spray with SPF. Either are great options and work very well with dry skin!
