Looking for a Halloween makeup look that’s a little witchy, a little glamorous, and instantly recognizable? Sarah Sanderson makeup from Hocus Pocus is such a fun way to dress up for Halloween…especially if you want a costume that still lets you feel pretty!

Sarah’s look is playful and feminine with softly defined eyes, flushed cheeks, and that signature bold lip. And the best part? You don’t need professional costume makeup or complicated special effects to recreate it. You can get the look with regular makeup products you may already have in your beauty bag.

Whether you’re heading to a Halloween party, trick-or-treating with your kids, or putting together a last-minute costume, I’m breaking down the makeup tips you need to channel your inner Sanderson sister.

So grab your makeup brushes and come, we fly!

FAQs

  • Who is Sarah Sanderson? Sarah Sanderson is one of the Sanderson sisters in the movie Hocus Pocus. She is played by Sarah Jessica Parker.
  • How can I achieve the Sarah Sanderson look for Halloween? Sarah Sanderson has smokey eyes, red lips, contour, a beauty mark on her chin, and defined eyebrows. You can get her look by following the steps below.
  • What makeup products do I need to get the Sarah Sanderson makeup look? The best makeup to use to recreate Sarah Sanderson’s look is cream makeup.

Makeup Tips to Get the Sarah Sanderson Makeup Look

It can be overwhelming trying to recreate a complete look. But when you break it down into little sections, it’s really achievable! When you watch Hocus Pocus or search for Sarah Sanderson on Google, you notice a few things about her. Sarah Sanderson has:

  • Smokey eyes
  • Bold lips
  • Contour
  • Beauty mark on her chin
  • Defined eyebrows

You can recreate her sultry look by breaking it down to these steps. Here’s how:

Smokey Eyes

In my makeup artist course, I learned how to do a really easy smokey eye, and you can learn how too! Here’s what you’ll need:

Here’s how to get an easy smokey eye:

  • Apply black eyeliner with the Multitasker brush to the main part of your eyelid. Don’t go above the crease.
  • With the same brush, set the eyeliner with a black eyeshadow.
  • Take a warm brown eyeshadow and pat it above the black to blend the harsh line. Blend it until it looks seamless.
  • Apply the shimmer eyeshadow under the brow and on the inner part of the eye.
  • If you want more drama, add black eyeliner along your upper and/or lower lashes.
  • Apply a thick layer of Mascara.

Bold Lips

A bold lip is the perfect addition to this Halloween makeup look! But the tricky thing with red lips is that it either fades quickly or comes off on your teeth! And you want to look great all evening!

The absolute BEST long-lasting lipstick is from SeneGence. You apply it in 3 thin layers to really seal in the color and then top it with a gloss for moisture. Your lip color will not budge for HOURS! You can eat, drink, kiss, laugh, and talk and it won’t leave your lips.

Any of these long lasting LipSense shades would be perfect for this look: Red Blu, Plum, Lexi Berry, Fly Girl, Coco

Contour

Sarah Sanderson has defined cheekbones and you can easily get this look too! Here’s what you’ll need:

Here’s how to get those contoured cheekbones:

  • Find your cheekbones on your face.
  • Start at your hairline near your ear and take the Detail Brush and the cream contour and draw a line right below your cheekbones.
  • End the line near the outer corner of your eye.
  • Then blend the contour upwards.

Beauty Mark on Chin

Take the same eyeliner you used and create a little beauty mark on your chin. Easy peasy!!

Defined Eyebrows

Sarah Sanderson has great brows! Use a brow pen to define your brows to make them frame your face. Follow the tips in the video below:

Makeup Products to Get the Sarah Sanderson Look

Here’s a list of the makeup products and tools you need to create this look:

The great thing about this Sarah Sanderson look is that all the products can be used all year round! They’re all versatile products that you can use daily. So there’s no need to waste a ton of money….this is a practical Halloween look that won’t require you to use products that you’ll never use again!

And that’s it….you’ve officially put a spell on your makeup routine.

What I love about recreating Sarah Sanderson’s makeup is that it feels like Halloween without requiring complicated face paint or a completely different makeup routine. It’s feminine, a little dramatic, a little witchy, and most importantly…FUN.

Finish the look with Sarah-inspired hair and a witchy outfit, and you’ve got a recognizable Halloween costume without having to spend hours getting ready.

Need a Halloween costume you can pull together at the last minute? This easy cheetah Halloween makeup is cute, quick, and surprisingly simple to recreate using makeup you may already have at home!

I’m all about Halloween looks that don’t require hours of getting ready or spending a ton of money on a costume you’ll wear once. This cheetah makeup has been one of my go-to looks for years because you can create it in just a few minutes, throw on a black or animal-print outfit, add some ears, and call it DONE.

Whether you’re creating this look for yourself, your teenager, or even a child, I’ll show you step-by-step how to create a cute cheetah face using simple makeup products and easy techniques…no professional costume makeup skills required!

How to Create a Cheetah Halloween Makeup Look

Once you have the right tools and products, it’s time to get to work! To get this cheetah Halloween makeup look here are the simple steps:

  • Start with a regular face of makeup (if you’re an adult, or skip this step if you’re applying this makeup to a child). Don’t skip the contour! The Buff Brush is great for this first step.
  • Apply Bella Bronzer heavily on the top of your forehead and on your cheeks and cheekbones. This will give you a bronzed look. Use the Buff Brush and tap it liberally on those spots.
  • Take the Multitasker Brush and Cola contour and start applying cheetah like spots on your face. Start adding a little at a time and continue around your face until you get the desired look.
  • Use the same brush and contour to create a nose, whiskers, and defined eyes.
  • Use the Multitasker Brush and Versailles and start adding in white areas to the spots to give it a more dimensional look. If you prefer darker spots, you can use Bella Bronzer in between the black marks. Be creative…there is no right or wrong way!

Use these images as guides to create the look you want. You don’t have to be precise and perfect. A cheetah’s spots are not symmetrical so have fun with it!

Once you have your cheetah Halloween makeup done, what should you wear? A simple black shirt and black pants will do! Top the look off with some cute cheetah ears. If you have cheetah print shoes, that’s a bonus!

And just like that, you’re ready for Halloween! That’s why I love this easy cheetah Halloween makeup so much. You don’t need an elaborate costume, expensive face paint, or an hour to get ready. A few makeup products, some cheetah spots, a cute nose and whiskers, and you’ve got a Halloween look that feels fun without requiring a ton of effort.

Pair it with something black or animal print that you already have in your closet, add a pair of ears if you want, and you’re out the door!

And if you’re looking for even more last-minute inspiration, check out my Easy Halloween Makeup Looks for Women Over 40, where I share four more simple looks you can create using makeup you already own.

How to Get Fuller, Natural-Looking Eyebrows After 40

If you grew up in the ’90s or early 2000s, there’s a good chance your eyebrows have been through some things.

We tweezed them. Then we tweezed them some more. And some of us are still waiting for those poor little hairs to come back.

Add in the natural changes that can happen to our brows as we get older, and suddenly the eyebrow routine we used in our 20s doesn’t work quite as well in our 40s.

But here’s the good news: You don’t need to draw on an entirely new eyebrow to make sparse brows look fuller. In fact, that’s exactly what I DON’T want you to do.

As a licensed esthetician and certified makeup artist, my goal with eyebrows for women over 40 is to work with the brows you already have. A little shaping, strategic trimming, some lift, and tiny hair-like strokes can make a surprisingly big difference.

My method comes down to five simple steps:

Boundaries. Tweeze. Trim. Lift. Fill.

Let’s walk through each one.

Why Eyebrows Matter So Much After 40

Brows frame your entire face. A beautiful brow can help define your eyes and give the face a more polished appearance…even if you’re wearing very little makeup everywhere else.

But brows can also become less full and defined with age. That’s when it’s tempting to grab a brow pencil and start coloring everything in. But please don’t.

The goal isn’t to create two dark, perfectly stamped eyebrows. The goal is to make your natural brows look like a better version of themselves. That’s why I shape first and fill last.

Step 1: Find Your Brow Boundaries Before You Tweeze

Before you pick up the tweezers, figure out where your brows should actually begin, arch, and end.

I call these your brow boundaries.

This is one of the most important steps because once you understand the basic shape you’re working toward, you’ll know which hairs belong and which ones don’t.

Where Should Your Eyebrows Start?

Take a brow pencil, makeup brush, or another straight tool and hold it vertically along the side of your nose.

Where that line meets your brow gives you a helpful reference for where the brow should begin.

Be careful not to remove too much from the inner brow. Brows that begin too far apart can change the proportions of the face and leave you with even more space you’ll feel like you need to fill in later.

Where Should Your Brow Arch Be?

Look straight ahead and use your facial features as a guide for finding the natural high point of your brow.

The exact placement will vary depending on your face and natural brow shape, so don’t force an exaggerated arch that isn’t naturally there.

But a good method is to take a makeup brush and place it at the bottom of your nose, angle it to the middle of your pupil, and right above that should be your highest point of your brow arch.

Where Should Your Eyebrow End?

Use your tool to create a diagonal line from the outer area of your nose toward the outer corner of your eye.

That gives you a helpful guideline for where the tail of your brow can end.

One thing I pay attention to on mature eyes is the direction of the brow tail. Extending your brow dramatically downward can visually pull the eye down with it. I prefer a natural-looking tail that defines the brow without creating a long, droopy endpoint.

Makeup Artist Tip:

Mark your three brow boundaries before you start tweezing. It’s much easier to remove another hair later than it is to put one back. Trust every woman who survived the skinny-brow era on that one.

Step 2: Tweeze Conservatively

Once you’ve established your boundaries, you can clean up the shape.

The key word is clean up.

We’re not trying to completely reshape your brows with tweezers. Remove obvious stray hairs that fall outside your desired shape, particularly between the brows and underneath the brow where you want a cleaner line.

Then STOP. Seriously. Put the tweezers down.

When you’re already dealing with sparse eyebrows, every hair matters. Over-tweezing only creates more work for you when it’s time to fill them in.

I also recommend stepping back from the mirror periodically. When your face is two inches from a magnifying mirror, that one little hair can look incredibly important. From normal conversational distance? No one can see it.

And if this process is too intimidating for you, invest in going to get your brows professionally shaped. It’w worth the money!

Step 3: Trim Long Brow Hairs…But Don’t Overdo It

Next, brush your brow hairs upward so you can see their natural length.

If you have a few hairs that extend significantly beyond the shape of your brow, carefully trim the excess with small brow scissors. You don’t need to give every single brow hair the exact same haircut.

Over-trimming can actually make sparse eyebrows look even more sparse because you’ve removed some of the length that helps create the appearance of fullness.

Trim the obvious spider legs and leave the rest alone. You’re looking for polished…not perfect.

Step 4: Use Brow Gel to Lift Sparse Eyebrows

This is where things start getting really good.

Before I start drawing in missing hairs, I like to see what I can accomplish with the hairs I already have.

Brush your brows upward and slightly outward with brow gel. That simple change can instantly make brows look fuller and more lifted.

And here’s why I like doing the gel BEFORE filling: Once the hairs are lifted into place, I can clearly see where the actual sparse areas are. Instead of filling the entire brow, I only have to add makeup where something is missing.

Less brow makeup = a more natural-looking brow.

For women over 40, that softer finish can be especially flattering.

Step 5: Fill Sparse Areas With Hair-Like Strokes

Now we’re ready for the brow pen. And this is where I see one of the biggest eyebrow mistakes:

Coloring in the entire eyebrow.

If you want your brows to look natural, don’t think of your brow pen like a Sharpie marker. Think of it as a way to create individual brow hairs.

I use a fine-tip brow pen and make tiny, light strokes in the same direction my natural hairs grow.

If there’s already hair somewhere? I don’t necessarily need to put more product there.

If there’s a little gap? That’s where I’ll add a stroke or two.

If the tail is sparse? I’ll create a few tiny hairs to give it definition.

The goal is that when someone looks at your eyebrows, they can’t immediately tell which hairs are real and which ones you created.

That’s the secret to filling in sparse eyebrows without making them look drawn on.

Follow the Direction of Your Natural Brow Hair

Another small detail that makes a BIG difference is the direction of your strokes.

Brow hairs don’t all grow in exactly the same direction. Toward the front of the brow, the hairs often grow more vertically. As you move through the brow, they gradually begin growing outward. Your brow-pen strokes should mimic that pattern.

If you draw identical horizontal lines across the entire brow, they’ll look like drawn-on lines. Vary the length and direction slightly so your strokes mimic actual hair.

Don’t Make the Front of Your Brows Too Dark

If there’s one place where I’d rather you use too little product than too much, it’s the very front of your brows.

A dark, square inner brow can immediately make the entire eyebrow look artificial. Keep the front softer. You can add a few fine upward strokes where you’re sparse, but don’t create a solid block of color.

Remember: Your eyebrows should frame your face…not enter the room before you do.

Choose a Brow Color That Looks Natural

Going too dark can make sparse brows look harsher rather than fuller. You want enough contrast to define your brows without making them look obviously painted on.

Your ideal shade depends on your natural brow hair, hair color, skin tone, and the overall look you prefer.

When in doubt, I’d rather build a softer color gradually than start with something extremely dark and try to tone it down. And don’t feel like both brows need to look perfectly identical. They’re sisters…not twins.

My 5-Step Method for Eyebrows Over 40

If all of that feels like a lot to remember, here’s the entire routine:

1. BOUNDARIES
Find where your brows should begin, arch, and end.

2. TWEEZE
Remove obvious stray hairs without over-plucking.

3. TRIM
Brush the hairs up and carefully trim only excessive length.

4. LIFT
Use brow gel to brush your natural hairs upward and outward.

5. FILL
Use a fine brow pen to add individual hair-like strokes only where you’re sparse.

That’s it.

You don’t need five different brow products or an elaborate routine.

Work with the hair you have first. Then fake only what you’re missing.

Better Brows Essentials

Common Eyebrow Mistakes That Can Make Sparse Brows Look Less Natural

If you’re struggling with sparse eyebrows makeup, check to see if you’re doing any of these:

  • Over-tweezing the brow
  • Trimming too much length
  • Filling in the entire eyebrow instead of just sparse areas
  • Making the front of the brow too dark or square
  • Using a brow shade that’s too harsh
  • Drawing long lines instead of individual hair-like strokes
  • Extending the tail too far downward
  • Trying to make both eyebrows perfectly identical

Usually, getting better brows isn’t about adding MORE makeup. It’s about being more strategic with what you’re already doing.

Do You Apply Brow Gel Before or After Brow Pen?

You can use brow products in different orders depending on the formulas you prefer, but for my method, I like using brow gel first.

Why? Because I want to lift and position my natural hairs before deciding where I need to add fake ones. Once my brows are brushed into place, the sparse areas become much easier to see. Then I can use my brow pen strategically rather than filling everything.

This is especially helpful if your brows look sparse when they’re lying flat but appear surprisingly full once they’re lifted.

What Is the Best Brow Product for Sparse Eyebrows?

For the most natural-looking result, one of my favorite tools is a fine-tip brow pen.

The precision allows you to create small strokes that resemble individual hairs rather than filling the brow with one solid block of pigment.

I also love pairing it with a good brow gel. For me, those two products do most of the heavy lifting:

Brow gel = lift and hold.
Brow pen = believable fullness.

Eyebrows for Women Over 40: Frequently Asked Questions

  • Why do eyebrows get sparse as you age? Brows can appear thinner over time for a variety of reasons, including changes in the normal hair-growth cycle and years of grooming or over-tweezing. If you experience sudden or significant eyebrow hair loss, especially along with other symptoms, it’s worth discussing with your healthcare provider rather than assuming it’s simply aging.
  • How do you fill in sparse eyebrows and still make them look natural? Start by brushing your existing brow hairs into place. Then use a fine brow pen to create small, hair-like strokes only in the areas that need more fullness. Avoid coloring in the entire eyebrow with one solid layer of pigment.
  • Should women over 40 have thicker eyebrows? There isn’t one perfect eyebrow thickness for every woman over 40. The most flattering brow usually works with your natural hair growth, facial proportions, and features. Instead of chasing a brow trend, focus on creating a balanced, softly defined shape that looks natural on you.
  • How can I make sparse eyebrows look fuller without looking fake? Start with brow gel. Brushing the hairs upward can help maximize the fullness you already have. Then add fine brow-pen strokes only where there are visible gaps. Using less product and mimicking natural hair growth usually creates a more believable result.
  • Should you use a brow pencil or brow pen for sparse eyebrows? Both can work, but I especially like a fine-tip brow pen when you need to recreate individual hairs. A traditional pencil can be wonderful for soft shading and definition, while a fine brow pen makes it easier to create precise, hair-like strokes.
  • Should brow gel go on before or after filling in your eyebrows? Either method can work, but I prefer brow gel first for sparse eyebrows. It allows me to lift my existing hairs and see exactly where I’m missing fullness before I add brow-pen strokes.
  • How do you shape eyebrows for mature eyes? Start with your natural brow structure and use your facial features to identify the beginning, arch, and endpoint. Avoid over-tweezing or forcing an exaggerated shape. I also pay attention to the brow tail because extending it dramatically downward can visually pull the eye area down.
  • Can you make sparse eyebrows look fuller without microblading? Absolutely. Strategic shaping, brow gel, and a fine brow pen can create a significant difference without permanent makeup. The key is creating the illusion of individual hairs instead of drawing a solid eyebrow.

Better Brows After 40 Don’t Have to Be Complicated

If your eyebrows aren’t as full as they used to be, your answer doesn’t have to be drawing on darker, heavier brows. In fact, I’d do the opposite.

Shape less. Keep more hair. Lift what you have. Fill only what’s missing.

Remember my five steps:

Boundaries. Tweeze. Trim. Lift. Fill.

Once you get the shape right, the actual makeup portion can take just a couple of minutes. And that’s what I want makeup to be for women in our 40s and beyond.

Not a way to hide our age. Not a list of rules telling us what we’re no longer allowed to do. Just a few updated techniques that help us work with the face we have now and feel beautiful in the skin we’re in. Because better brows don’t require MORE makeup. They just require a better strategy.

Easy Halloween Makeup for Women—No Costume Required!

Can I make a confession? I don’t really love dressing up for Halloween.

I love the parties, the treats, and seeing everyone else’s creative costumes, but when it comes to spending a bunch of money and hours putting together an elaborate costume for myself? I’m usually looking for the easiest option possible.

And somehow, every year there seems to be at least one Halloween party or event where I need to dress up! So I put together four easy Halloween makeup looks for women over 40 who are like me and want to participate in the fun without spending a ton of time or money.

We’re talking:

  • Cat makeup
  • Deer makeup
  • Minnie Mouse makeup
  • Scarecrow makeup

Each of these Halloween makeup ideas can be done in under 10 minutes, doesn’t require a costume, and uses regular products you probably already have sitting in your makeup bag. No special Halloween face paint. No complicated techniques. No $75 costume you’re going to wear once and shove into the back of a closet.

Just cute, easy Halloween makeup…and you’re out the door!

I also created a coordinating YouTube tutorial where you can watch me create all four looks step by step. If you’re a visual learner, watch the video and do your makeup right along with me! (scroll to the bottom of this post!)

Easy Halloween Makeup for Women over 40

Why These Halloween Makeup Looks Are Perfect for Women Over 40

Halloween makeup doesn’t have to mean piling thick costume makeup all over your face. In fact, as a certified makeup artist, I prefer using the regular makeup products I already know work well on mature skin.

Heavy face paints and layers of product can emphasize texture, fine lines and dryness. These looks allow you to keep your normal complexion makeup underneath and simply add a few strategic details to turn your everyday makeup into a Halloween look.

The goal isn’t perfection. It’s to look festive, feel cute and still look like yourself!

And because each look takes less than 10 minutes, they’re perfect for last-minute Halloween parties, handing out candy, school events, work parties, neighborhood get-togethers or those invitations where you suddenly realize, Wait…we’re supposed to dress up?!

4 Easy Halloween Makeup Looks Using Regular Makeup

The best part about these looks is that you probably already own almost everything you need. Grab your foundation or skin tint, contour or bronzer, blush, eyeliner, mascara, brow products and a few neutral eyeshadows. Then pick your character!

1. Easy Cat Makeup for Women Over 40

You really can’t go wrong with a cat.

It’s probably one of the easiest last-minute Halloween costumes because your makeup does most of the work.

Start with your normal everyday makeup. Then use black eyeliner to create a slightly more dramatic cat eye. Add a small black nose, draw a line down toward your upper lip and finish with a few whiskers on each cheek.

You can keep it subtle and sophisticated or make your eyeliner a little more dramatic if you want the look to feel more costume-y.

Add a pair of cat ears, wear black, and you’re done!

What you’ll need:

  • Black eyeliner
  • Mascara
  • Neutral eyeshadow
  • Your normal complexion makeup
  • Optional cat ears

This is probably my pick if someone invited me to a Halloween party at the very last minute. Easy, cute and almost zero effort.

Easy Halloween Makeup CAT

2. Easy Deer Makeup Using Your Everyday Makeup

This one looks much more complicated than it actually is!

For an easy deer makeup look, use your contour to add extra definition around your forehead, cheekbones and sides of your face.

Then use concealer or a light-colored makeup product to create the signature little deer spots.

Add definition around the eyes, darken the tip of your nose and finish with mascara.

Add a brown or neutral outfit and put your hair up in little buns to mimic antlers.

That’s it…you’ve officially become the cutest little deer in under 10 minutes.

Easy Halloween Makeup DEER

3. Easy Minnie Mouse Makeup

If you’d rather look cute than spooky, Minnie Mouse is such an easy option. And you really don’t need much!

Start with your normal makeup and add a classic black eyeliner. You can make the liner slightly more defined than you normally would to give the eyes that fun, animated feel.

Add plenty of mascara, rosy cheeks and a classic red or pink lip.

Then use your black eyeliner to color the tip of your nose.

Throw on some Minnie ears…or even a simple red bow…and your Halloween look is finished.

The trick with this one is keeping the makeup pretty and polished rather than turning it into heavy costume makeup. You still look like yourself…just the Disney version.

Easy Halloween Makeup MINNIE MOUSE

4. Easy Scarecrow Makeup for Women Over 40

Scarecrow makeup is another Halloween classic that takes almost no effort.

Start with your everyday makeup and add a little extra warm blush to the apples of your cheeks.

Then use eyeliner to draw simple stitch marks near the corners of your mouth and add a few details around your nose.

Warm brown, copper, rust or orange eyeshadows work beautifully for this look and give it that perfect fall feeling.

Pair it with a flannel, denim shirt or straw hat you already own and you’ve basically created a Halloween costume without actually buying a Halloween costume.

This is one of my favorites if you want something festive but still really wearable.

Easy Halloween Makeup SCARE CROW

How to Make Halloween Makeup Look Better on Mature Skin

One reason I wanted to create these looks specifically for women over 40 is because we don’t necessarily want to use the same makeup techniques we used at 20.

Here are a few things I recommend:

Prep Your Skin First

Hydrated skin is always going to give you a better makeup application.

Do your normal skincare routine before applying your Halloween makeup and give your moisturizer a few minutes to absorb.

Check out my preferred skincare prep method!

Keep Your Base Light

You don’t need heavy foundation underneath these looks.

I prefer a lightweight skin tint that evens the skin while allowing your natural skin to show through.

Use Cream Products When Possible

Cream blush and contour can be beautiful on mature skin because they’re easy to blend and can give the complexion a fresh, natural finish.

Don’t Overdo the Details

You don’t need to cover your entire face in costume makeup for people to understand what you’re dressed as.

A nose, whiskers, spots or stitches can communicate the whole costume.

Sometimes less makeup actually makes the finished look cuter.

Good Makeup Brushes

Having good makeup brushes is KEY for creating simple makeup looks for everyday or for Halloween!

Makeup I Used to Get these Easy Halloween Makeup Looks

Here’s a list of everything I used to create these easy looks:

→Eyeshadow Primer

→Pup Eyeshadow

→Cafe Eyeshadow

→Black Eyeliner

→Lip Liner

→Pink Lipstick

→Contour Stick (shade medium)

→Blush (shade Sweet Rose + Strawberry Hill)

→Linen Highlight

→Red Lipstick

→Zion Eyeshadow

→Sandstone Lip + Cheek

→Fluffy Eyeshadow Brush

→Multitasker Brush

→Contour Brush

Halloween Makeup You Can Do With What You Already Own

This might be my favorite part of these looks.

Before you run to the Halloween store, shop your makeup bag and your closet.

Your brown eyeshadow can become deer makeup.

Your eyeliner can create cat whiskers, a Minnie nose or scarecrow stitches.

Your contour can completely transform the shape of your face.

Your red lipstick suddenly becomes part of your Minnie Mouse costume.

Then head to your closet.

Black shirt? Cat.

Brown sweater? Deer.

Red top? Minnie.

Flannel? Scarecrow.

Done!

Halloween doesn’t have to become another holiday where you feel like you need to buy a bunch of stuff.

Want to see exactly how I create the cat, deer, Minnie Mouse and scarecrow looks?

I’ve put all four into one easy YouTube tutorial so you can see each transformation from beginning to end.

Each look takes less than 10 minutes and uses products you probably already have in your makeup bag.

FAQ: Easy Halloween Makeup for Women

  • What is the easiest Halloween makeup to do? A cat is one of the easiest Halloween makeup looks because you only need a few products. Add black eyeliner, a nose and whiskers to your normal makeup, put on a black outfit and you’re ready to go.
  • Can I create Halloween makeup without face paint? Absolutely! All four of these looks use regular makeup rather than traditional costume face paint. Eyeliner, eyeshadow, bronzer, blush, concealer and lipstick can be used to create tons of easy Halloween looks.
  • What is a good last-minute Halloween costume for women? Try a cat, deer, Minnie Mouse or scarecrow. Each can be created using simple makeup plus clothing you may already have in your closet. You can create the makeup in under 10 minutes and add inexpensive accessories if you want to make the character more obvious.
  • How can I make Halloween makeup look good on mature skin? Start with well-hydrated skin, keep your complexion makeup lightweight and avoid adding unnecessary layers of heavy product. Cream products can help create a fresh finish, and you can use eyeliner or eyeshadow strategically for the costume details instead of covering the entire face with costume makeup.
  • What Halloween makeup can I do with regular makeup? You’d be surprised how much you can create with a basic makeup bag! Black or brown eyeliner can create whiskers, noses and stitches; eyeshadow can add dimension and color; bronzer or contour can reshape the face; and blush and lipstick can add character-specific color.
  • Do I need a costume with Halloween makeup? Not necessarily! That’s the whole point of these looks. Your makeup can become the costume. Wear simple clothes in colors that coordinate with your character, add an accessory like cat ears or a bow if you already have one, and you’re ready to go.

Easy Halloween Makeup Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

If you’re like me and Halloween costumes aren’t exactly your love language, don’t make it harder than it needs to be. You don’t have to spend a ton of money on a costume you’ll probably never wear again. You don’t need professional face paint. And you definitely don’t need to spend two hours getting ready.

Grab what you already have in your makeup bag and give yourself 10 minutes. Whether you choose a cat, deer, Minnie Mouse or scarecrow, each of these easy Halloween makeup looks lets you join in the fun while still feeling like yourself.

And if you’re craving something a little more glamorous this year, don’t forget to check out my Nicole Kidman-inspired Practical Magic makeup tutorial for another easy Halloween option that’s especially beautiful for women over 40.

Because at this stage of life, I want my Halloween costume to be three things:

Cute. Easy. Done.

Not a way to hide our age. Not a list of rules telling us what we’re no longer allowed to do. Just a few updated techniques that help us work with the face we have now and feel beautiful in the skin we’re in. Because better brows don’t require MORE makeup. They just require a better strategy.

Is there anything more perfect for fall than Practical Magic?

The cozy New England setting. The Victorian house. The witches. The ’90s beauty. And, of course, Nicole Kidman as Gillian Owens with that gorgeous red hair and effortlessly sultry makeup.

It’s basically fall beauty inspiration wrapped up in one movie.

I wanted to recreate that iconic Practical Magic makeup in a way that feels beautiful and wearable for women over 40. This isn’t theatrical witch makeup. There’s no green face paint, fake warts or elaborate costume makeup happening over here.

Instead, we’re creating a soft, slightly smoky, feminine witchy glam inspired by Nicole Kidman’s look in the movie…while using makeup techniques that work beautifully on mature skin.

And the best part? The makeup can basically be your costume.

Throw on a black dress or something flowy from your closet, add a few witchy accessories if you want, and you’re ready for a Halloween party without spending a fortune on a costume you’ll wear once.

I’ve also created a coordinating YouTube Practical Magic makeup tutorial so you can watch the entire look come together step by step.

Let’s get witchy.

What Makes Nicole Kidman’s Practical Magic Makeup So Iconic?

Nicole Kidman’s character Gillian Owens has such a recognizable beauty look throughout Practical Magic. It’s feminine and sexy without looking overly done. Rather than traditional Halloween makeup, the look is really about creating warm, sultry definition.

Think:

  • Glowing, natural-looking skin
  • Warm, flushed cheeks
  • Smoky, softly defined eyes
  • Long lashes
  • Defined brows
  • A beautiful lip

That’s what makes this such a fun Halloween look for women over 40. You don’t have to look like you’re wearing a Halloween costume. You can simply look beautiful, slightly mysterious and a little witchy. And I’m here for that kind of Halloween costume.

How to Prep Mature Skin for Witchy Glam Makeup

Before we get into the fun part, let’s talk about the step that can make or break your finished makeup:

Skin prep.

As a licensed esthetician and certified makeup artist, this is something I wish more women over 40 understood.

The more hydrated and healthy your skin is underneath your makeup, the better your makeup is going to look on top of it.

Start with your normal skincare routine and make sure your skin is well hydrated before applying makeup.

Pay special attention to areas that tend to get dry or show texture, especially around the eyes.

Then allow your skincare a few minutes to absorb before moving on to makeup.

You don’t need to create a perfectly smooth, poreless canvas.

Real skin has texture.

We’re simply giving our makeup a healthy, hydrated canvas to work with.

Check out my tried and true 3-step skincare process!

Step 1: Create a Fresh, Natural-Looking Base

For this Practical Magic makeup look, I don’t want a thick layer of foundation.

Nicole Kidman’s makeup in the movie still looks like skin, and that’s exactly what we’re going for.

I prefer using a lightweight skin tint to even out the complexion while still allowing your natural skin to show through.

Apply a small amount and blend it well.

With mature skin, adding more product isn’t always the answer. Too much foundation can settle into fine lines and emphasize texture.

Start light. You can always add coverage where you actually need it.

Step 2: Add Soft Warmth with Bronzer

Next, let’s add some warmth back into the face.

Apply bronzer on the highest points of your face, where the sun would naturally hit. The fullest part of your forehead, above your cheekbones, on top of your nose and chin.

We’re going for a soft and natural makeup look. The eyes will be the star of the show!

Step 3: Add a Warm, Flushed Blush

One thing I love about this look is that it doesn’t feel pale or washed out like traditional witch makeup.

Gillian’s makeup feels alive and feminine.

Choose a warm or rosy blush and apply it where it naturally brings life back into your complexion.

Cream blush is especially beautiful on mature skin because it blends into the complexion rather than sitting heavily on top of it. The goal is a soft, romantic flush that complements the warmer eye makeup we’re about to add.

Step 4: Create Nicole Kidman’s Soft Smoky Eyes

Now for my favorite part.

The eyes are where we really start bringing in that Practical Magic witchy glam.

Instead of creating a super-dark black smoky eye, use softer eyeshadow colors.

Think taupes and softly smoky tones.

Start with a lighter shade and gradually build depth toward the outer corner of the eye.

If you have hooded or mature eyes, don’t feel like you have to follow your natural crease exactly.

Place your deeper shadow slightly higher so it’s still visible when your eyes are open.

That’s one of those tiny makeup changes that can make a HUGE difference after 40.

Then blend the edges until everything looks soft and diffused.

Smoky doesn’t have to mean heavy.

Witchy Glam Eyeshadow Look

Step 5: Define the Eyes With Eyeliner

Add eyeliner along the upper and lower lash line to give your eyes more definition.

You can keep it slightly smudged using a smudge eyeshadow brush rather than creating a super-sharp graphic line.

That softness works beautifully with this look and can also be more flattering on mature eyes.

For even more of that sultry Gillian Owens feel, add a little definition around the outer portion of your lower lash line and blend it rather than leaving a harsh line.

We want:

Mysterious witch.

Not:

Forgot to take my eyeliner off last night.

Step 6: Finish the Eyes With Lashes and Brows

Add mascara to lift and define your lashes.

Then give your brows a little attention.

Brows frame the entire face, so don’t skip them!

Brush your brows up first with brow gel, then fill sparse areas with small hair-like strokes with a brow pen rather than drawing on one solid brow.

A softly defined brow helps balance the smoky eyes without competing with them.

Step 7: Finish With a Witchy Lip

Now finish the look with your lip color.

You can take this in a couple of directions depending on how dramatic you want your Practical Magic makeup to feel.

For something softer and more wearable, choose a warm nude, rose or mauve.

For more drama, go slightly deeper with a berry, wine or rich red tone.

Either way, I like keeping the lip polished and feminine with a lip liner and lip oil rather than overly theatrical.

Practical Magic Witchy Glam

How to Turn This Makeup Into an Easy Practical Magic Halloween Costume

This is exactly why I love makeup-focused Halloween costumes. You don’t have to buy an elaborate costume! Once you’ve finished your Nicole Kidman-inspired makeup, shop your own closet.

Look for:

  • A black dress
  • A flowy blouse
  • A long skirt
  • A cardigan
  • Boots
  • Layered jewelry
  • Anything romantic, slightly bohemian or witchy

If you want to take it one step further, add loose waves to your hair and lean into that effortless ’90s witch aesthetic. You don’t need to recreate Gillian Owens from head to toe for people to get the vibe.

And even if nobody knows exactly who you’re supposed to be? You still look really good. That’s a Halloween win in my book.

Practical Magic Makeup for Mature Skin: Keep It Soft

If you’re recreating this look after 40, there’s one principle I want you to remember:

You don’t need MORE makeup to make the look dramatic.

Strategic placement will do more for you than piling on product.

Keep your complexion lightweight.

Hydrate your under-eyes before concealer.

Build your eyeshadow gradually.

Blend harsh edges.

Use cream products where they make sense.

And let some of your real skin show through.

You can absolutely wear smoky eyes, contour, eyeliner and richer colors after 40.

We just might apply them a little differently than we did at 22…and that’s okay!

FAQ About Practical Magic Makeup

  • What makeup did Nicole Kidman wear in Practical Magic? Nicole Kidman’s character Gillian Owens is remembered for a sultry, feminine ’90s beauty aesthetic with glowing skin, defined eyes and warm, romantic color. Rather than trying to duplicate every exact product from the film, this tutorial recreates the overall feel of Gillian’s makeup using modern products and techniques that work well on mature skin.
  • How do you recreate Nicole Kidman’s Practical Magic makeup? Start with a lightweight complexion, add softly blended contour and warm blush, and create definition around the eyes with neutral and smoky shades. Finish with eyeliner, mascara, defined brows and a complementary lip color. The key is keeping the finished makeup soft and slightly undone rather than overly precise.
  • Is Practical Magic makeup good for a Halloween costume? Yes! It’s a great Halloween option if you want something more sophisticated than traditional costume makeup. Pair the makeup with a black dress, flowy clothing or witch-inspired accessories you already own for an easy costume.
  • Can women over 40 wear smoky eye makeup? Absolutely. For mature or hooded eyes, try building the color gradually and placing some of your deeper shadow slightly above the natural crease so it’s visible when your eyes are open. Keeping the edges well blended can create definition without making the eye look heavy.
  • What colors work best for a Practical Magic makeup look? Warm browns, taupes, rosy shades, mauves and softly smoky neutrals work beautifully for a Practical Magic-inspired look. You can adjust the intensity depending on your coloring and how dramatic you want your Halloween makeup to be.
  • Do I need special Halloween makeup for this look? No. That’s one reason I love it! You can recreate this Practical Magic makeup with regular products from your makeup bag. Foundation or skin tint, contour or bronzer, blush, neutral eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, brow products and lipstick are enough to create the look.
  • What is an easy witch makeup look for women over 40? A Practical Magic-inspired look is perfect if you want easy witch makeup that still feels grown-up and beautiful. Instead of traditional costume makeup, create glowing skin, softly smoky eyes, warm cheeks and a defined lip, then pair it with a simple black outfit.

Practical Magic Makeup Is the Perfect Grown-Up Halloween Look

If you’re like me and don’t really love going all-out with Halloween costumes, this is my kind of costume.

It’s easy. It’s beautiful. It doesn’t require a bunch of costume makeup. And you don’t have to spend money on an outfit you’re never going to wear again.

Best of all, you still feel like yourself.

This Nicole Kidman-inspired Practical Magic makeup gives you just enough witchy glam to make Halloween fun without feeling like you spent the entire day getting ready. And there’s something I really love about recreating an iconic beauty look in our 40s.

We don’t have to stop experimenting with makeup because we’re getting older. We can still play. We can still try the smoky eye. We can still wear the bold lip. We can still have fun with beauty. We’re just learning how to make those looks work for the beautiful faces we have now.

So grab your makeup bag, put on Practical Magic, and let’s get witchy.

Fall is one of my favorite times to freshen up my makeup. But that doesn’t mean you need to buy an entirely new makeup bag every time the seasons change.

Sometimes just swapping three things…your contour, blush, and eyeshadow…can take your everyday makeup from summer to fall.

And if you’re in your 40s or beyond, there’s another piece to consider: the makeup techniques and formulas you loved years ago may not work quite the same way on your skin now. As a licensed esthetician and certified makeup artist in my 40s, I’m much more interested in makeup that enhances my skin than makeup that covers it up.

For this fresh fall look, I’m using lightweight, creamy formulas and warmer seasonal colors to create dimension while still letting my natural skin show through. The result is polished, glowy and wearable…without feeling heavy or overdone.

I have a coordinating YouTube tutorial where I’m showing you the entire fall makeup look from start to finish, so you can follow along with me as you do your makeup!

Why Cream Makeup Works So Well for Mature Skin

One of the biggest changes I’ve made to my own makeup routine as I’ve gotten older is paying more attention to texture. Mature skin tends to become drier, and fine lines and texture can become more noticeable. Applying layer after layer of heavy makeup and powder doesn’t necessarily hide those things. Sometimes it does the opposite.

That’s one reason I love working with lightweight liquid and cream formulas…they can create coverage and dimension while allowing the skin to maintain some of its natural luminosity.

My philosophy for makeup over 40 is usually: Use less. Place it intentionally. Blend well.

We aren’t trying to cover every line or erase every sign of aging. We’re enhancing the beautiful face we have now.

Start With Lightweight, Skin-Like Coverage

For this look, I start with the Olive Rose Hydroxytyrosol Skin Tint in Shade 9.

Instead of creating a thick layer of foundation, I want my complexion to look like healthy skin. I apply a small amount and blend it into the skin, adding more only where I actually need additional coverage.

That’s one of my biggest foundation tips for women over 40: Don’t automatically add more foundation when you want your skin to look better.

Too much foundation can settle into texture and fine lines. Start light and build strategically. And the brush you use matters!! This foundation brush makes your makeup look like a filter!!

If you need extra coverage around the eyes, redness, or discoloration, that’s where concealer comes in.

I’m using the HT Serum Concealer in LM1 and keeping the application light.

For my under-eyes, I also like using an eye balm before concealer to give that delicate area a little extra hydration so the concealer doesn’t cling to my wrinkles.

Mature Skin Makeup Tip:

Give your skincare and hydrating products a few minutes to absorb before applying your makeup. A well-prepped canvas can make a huge difference in how your makeup looks and wears. Check out my simple 3-step morning skincare routine.

The 3 Easy Swaps That Make Your Makeup Feel Like Fall

Here’s the fun part.

You don’t need to completely reinvent your makeup routine for every season. For my fall makeup for mature skin, I focus on changing three areas:

Contour. Blush. Eyeshadow.

These little color shifts can completely change the overall feeling of your makeup while allowing you to keep the rest of your tried-and-true routine.

1. Switch to a Richer Contour Shade for Fall

Contour is one of my favorite ways to bring shape and dimension back into the face.

For this fall look, I’m using the HT Shaping Contour in Medium.

Rather than placing contour too low underneath the cheekbone…which can visually drag the face downward…I like keeping mine around the cheekbone and blending upward.

Remember: Contour creates shadow. Bronzer creates warmth. They’re not the same. (read this post about the difference between contour and bronzer)

After contouring, I’ll use bronzer to bring that warmth back into my complexion. The combination gives you beautiful dimension without needing a heavy layer of makeup.

2. Try a Richer Fall Blush

One of the easiest ways to transition your makeup from summer to fall is changing your blush.

Instead of automatically reaching for the same bright summer pink or peach, try something a little richer.

For this look, I’m using HT Blush & Glow in Wild Rose. It’s the kind of shade that instantly makes a makeup look feel more autumnal without becoming dark or heavy.

Placement matters here too. I like keeping my blush slightly higher on my cheeks and blending it up and outward. This creates a fresh, lifted effect while still giving the face that healthy flush of color. And this blush brush makes it blend so beautifully!!

And don’t be afraid of blush after 40! Blush brings life back into your complexion and can be one of the most flattering parts of a mature makeup routine.

3. Warm Up Your Eyeshadow for Fall

Eyeshadow is where you can have so much fun with seasonal color.

For fall, think:

  • warm browns
  • bronze
  • copper
  • taupe
  • soft plum
  • muted berry
  • olive
  • champagne

You don’t need to use all of them at once! Even changing one or two eyeshadow shades can take your normal makeup routine into fall.

In my tutorial, I’m using Seint eyeshadows to create a soft, dimensional eye that complements the warmer contour and Wild Rose blush.

For mature or hooded eyes, I like building color gradually rather than applying a large amount of pigment at once.

Keep your eyes open periodically while you’re blending, too. If you have hooded eyes, this helps you see where your shadow will actually be visible when you’re looking straight ahead.

And yes…you can absolutely wear shimmer after 40! The key is choosing and placing it intentionally. A soft shimmer can bring light to the eyes and look beautiful on mature skin.

This eyeshadow brush set makes applying your eyeshadow so easy!!

Keep the Brows Soft and Natural

Brows frame the entire face, but they don’t need to overpower it.

I start by using a brow gel to brush the hairs into place. Then I use a brow pen to add small, hair-like strokes anywhere my brows look sparse.

The goal isn’t to draw on a completely new eyebrow. It’s simply to make the brows you already have look a little fuller and more polished. Especially for mature makeup, I prefer a softer brow over a dark, blocky shape.

Define the Eyes Without Making Them Look Heavy

If your eyes have become more hooded or seem smaller as you’ve gotten older, pay attention to how much dark makeup you’re putting around them.

Heavy eyeliner can take up valuable lid space and make the eyes appear smaller.

For this fall look, I use eyeliner for definition, but I keep the overall eye soft. Then I finish with mascara to open the eyes and define the lashes.

A simple lash curl before mascara can make an even bigger difference.

Use Powder Strategically on Mature Skin

You don’t necessarily need to powder your entire face.

I prefer to keep some natural luminosity in the skin and use powder strategically in areas where makeup tends to crease, move, or get too shiny.

This is especially important underneath the eyes.

More powder isn’t always the answer to concealer creasing. Too much can make a dry under-eye area look even more textured.

Use a small amount and build only if you need it.

Finish Your Fall Makeup With a Polished Lip

The final step is lips.

A little lip liner can add definition, especially because our natural lip border can become less defined with age.

Instead of creating a harsh outline, I like to line my lips and soften the color slightly inward.

Then I finish with lip oil for hydration and shine. The combination gives the lips definition without making them look overly “done.”

My Biggest Tip for Updating Your Makeup After 40

If your makeup doesn’t look quite the way it used to, that doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with your face.

Your face changed. Your makeup can change with it.

Sometimes we keep applying our makeup exactly the way we learned 10, 15, or 20 years ago and wonder why it suddenly isn’t as flattering.

You don’t need to throw everything away or chase every new makeup trend. Instead, start making small changes.

Use a little less foundation.

Add more hydration.

Move your blush slightly higher.

Soften your eyeliner.

Experiment with a richer seasonal color.

Those little adjustments can make a surprisingly big difference.

Fall Makeup for Mature Skin FAQs

  • What type of makeup is best for mature skin in the fall? Hydrating, lightweight liquid and cream formulas can be especially flattering on mature skin because they help maintain a fresh, skin-like finish. Look for formulas that work with your skin rather than creating a thick layer over it. Your skin type matters too, so choose products based on how your individual skin behaves.
  • How can I update my makeup for fall without buying all new products? Start by changing just a few colors. Swapping your blush, contour, and eyeshadow for slightly richer or warmer shades can make your entire makeup look feel more appropriate for fall without replacing everything you own.
  • What are the best fall eyeshadow colors for mature eyes? Warm brown, bronze, taupe, copper, soft plum, olive, muted berry and champagne are beautiful fall options. You don’t have to avoid shimmer simply because you’re over 40. A finely milled, soft shimmer placed intentionally can look gorgeous on mature eyes.
  • Should women over 40 use cream or powder makeup? There’s no rule saying women over 40 can’t use powder. However, cream and liquid formulas can be especially helpful when your skin becomes drier because they often create a more luminous finish. If you use powder, try applying it strategically rather than heavily powdering the entire face.
  • How do you keep fall makeup from looking too dark or heavy? Choose one or two areas to deepen rather than making everything darker. For example, pair a richer blush and warm eyeshadow with lightweight complexion makeup and a fresh lip. You still want dimension and warmth while allowing your skin to look like skin.
  • Where should mature women place blush for a lifted look? Try placing blush slightly higher on the cheek rather than concentrating all of the color low on the apples. Blend upward and outward toward the temple for a fresh, lifted appearance. Your individual face shape matters, so experiment with placement to see what flatters you most.
  • Can mature women wear shimmer eyeshadow? Absolutely. You don’t have to give up shimmer after 40. Look for softer, refined shimmer rather than chunky glitter, and use it intentionally. A little light-reflecting color on the lid can make the eyes look bright and beautiful.

A Fresh Fall Makeup Look Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

Creating beautiful fall makeup for mature skin doesn’t require a 20-step routine or an entirely new makeup collection.

Sometimes the simplest seasonal changes make the biggest impact. For me, changing my contour, blush, and eyeshadow is enough to give my everyday makeup that richer fall feeling while still looking fresh, glowy, and like ME.

That’s ultimately what I want makeup to do for women over 40. Not cover us. Not make us look 25 again. Just help us look in the mirror and feel beautiful in the skin we’re in.

If you want to recreate this exact look, watch my full YouTube tutorial above. I’m walking you through every step from skin tint to lips so you can get ready right along with me.

And remember: you weren’t made to fade. A new season is the perfect excuse to freshen things up and have a little fun with your makeup.

Have you ever stood in front of a wall of foundation bottles or scrolled an online makeup page with absolutely no idea which one is actually your shade? You’re not alone. Foundation shade matching is one of the trickiest parts of building a makeup routine and getting it wrong doesn’t just waste money, it can make your whole face look off, especially as our skin tone and undertones shift with age.

That’s exactly why I love the Olive Rose Shade Match Quiz. It takes just a few minutes, and at the end, you’ll get a personalized shade recommendation so you can stop guessing and start glowing.

Why Foundation Shade Matching Matters (Especially After 40)

Skin tone isn’t static…it changes with sun exposure, hormones, and age. A foundation that matched you five years ago may not be your match today. Wearing the wrong shade can make your skin look ashy, orange, flat, or tired, even when your skincare routine is doing everything right. On the flip side, the right shade does the opposite: it evens out your complexion and lets your natural glow show through. You look healthy!

This is one of the most common mistakes I see as a certified makeup artist, and it’s also one of the easiest to fix.

How the Olive Rose Shade Match Quiz Works

The quiz is quick, simple, and takes the guesswork out of shade matching. Just answer a few short questions about your skin, and you’ll be matched to your ideal Olive Rose skin tint shade.

Once you know your shade range, here’s what pairs beautifully with your skin tint:

  • Shades 1–3: Fair contour, paired with Seashell Rose, Sweet Rose, or Wild Rose blush
  • Shades 4–6: Light contour, paired with Strawberry Hill, Seashell Rose, Sweet Rose, or Wild Rose blush
  • Shades 7–10: Medium contour, paired with Lovers Lane, Rosewood, or Wild Rose
  • Shades 10–14: Deep contour, paired with Lovers Lane, Midnight Rose, or Rosewood blush

To find your perfect concealer, simply count over the number of skin tint shade you are. For instance, if you are Shade 7 in skin tint, then your concealer shade will be LM1.
