You’re in your 40s, your skin is changing, but you haven’t changed your makeup that you’ve been using since your 20s. Here’s the thing…your makeup hits different on mature skin. It’s just how it is. So if you want to look amazing, then you gotta change things up! Let’s unpack some natural makeup looks for women over 40 that will help you glow!
Prioritize Skincare
Before we get into makeup, it’s important to start with your skin. You must have healthy skin if you want a glowy and natural makeup look. Makeup can only do so much. Gone are the days when you could use a makeup remover wipe and call your skincare good. You’re over 40, so it’s time to put your big girl pants on and invest in a better skincare routine.
But there’s a problem with a lot of skincare products out there. The ingredients aren’t great, they don’t give you results, and skincare isn’t a one size fits all!! As an aesthetician, I help women over 40 create the perfect skincare routine for their skin type and skin concerns so they get healthy, happy, and glowy skin again!
This is what I personally use to prep my skin. But what works for me, might now work for you because skincare isn’t a one size fits all! Click the button below to get personal recs!
How to Revamp Your Current Makeup Routine
Once you have a good skincare routine in place, the type of makeup you use matters. What worked when you were in your 20s and 30s won’t necessarily work anymore for your mature skin in your 40s and beyond! It’s time to toss the makeup that is not doing you any favors.
Toss the heavy foundations and powders. They will settle in your fine lines and wrinkles and will add texture to your face that is not flattering.
Swap a black eyeliner for something more soft and subtle like a gray, brown, purple, green, or blue.
Invest in better quality makeup that will give you a healthy glow! Skin tint is a great option!!
Making a few switches will help you look and feel better in your skin! We don’t want our makeup to cover up our beauty but to enhance it…no matter our age!
What Makeup Products & Techniques Should You Avoid?
As your skin ages, you will notice fine lines and wrinkles and possibly more texture on your skin. It’s best to avoid heavy makeup products like powders and thick foundations that will settle in those pesky fine lines. You may think it helps cover them up but it’s really making your skin look dry and more textured. And that’s not what we want! Don’t think more is better. Think less is more!
Here are a few things to avoid if you want to achieve that natural makeup look for women over 40:
- Messy mascara- We all do it. Make a mess when applying our mascara! But we don’t have to leave the mess. After you’ve applied your makeup, take a few seconds to clean up any messes you’ve made. Make sure the mascara is fully dry, then take a clean q-tip and flick away the mess. It will polish your look off!
- Concealer- We all have the dark circles and we think that using concealer will make us look better. But most concealers add a thick layer under our eyes that add texture and crease. Instead, use color correctors to help cancel out the distractions. It’s more natural looking and won’t cause heavy creasing.
- Matte makeup- Matte makeup settles in our wrinkles and makes us look older! Instead, choose hydrating and light makeup that will help us glow!
- Fully lining the eye- I know you feel comfortable with a fully lined eye, but it is aging you!! It’s heavy and too dramatic for an everyday look. Save it for a night out. Instead, just apply eyeliner on the outer corners of your eyes. It’s softer and more subtle.
- Forgetting your brows- Invest in a brow gel to help add dimension and fullness to your brows. Then you can use a brow pen to fill in any areas that need more fullness.
