Whether you want a quick everyday look or you’re just trying to understand where eyeshadow is actually supposed to go, this beginner-friendly eyeshadow tutorial will help break it down step-by-step. The goal isn’t perfection. It’s learning how to create soft definition, brighten the eyes, and feel more confident applying makeup in a way that works for your features and eye shape.

What You Need for Eyeshadow Tutorial for Beginners

In order to get a great eyeshadow look, it really does matter what tools you have! But that doesn’t mean you have to have a lot of them! Just have a few in your collection that will work hard for you and that will give you the look you want. My absolute favorite eyeshadow brushes are the Eyeshadow Brush and the Smudge Brush. Both are so great and so easy to use. With just those eyeshadow brushes, you can get so many simple looks!

Along with good tools, you will also need quality eyeshadow. Not the cheap dollar store eyeshadow that doesn’t have any pigment. I’m talking high quality color that will last forever and that will give your eyelids the pop they need! Beginner Eyeshadow Techniques

When it comes to beginner eyeshadow techniques, there are a few methods to play around with. Here are the easiest to begin with:

• Wash Method
• Windshield Wiper Method
• Brightener Method
• Ombre Method

Wash Method

If you have a little bit of time or if you’re a simple gal or if you only have one eyeshadow shade you love or you just don’t like a lot of fuss, then the wash method will be your friend! With this method, you only need one eyeshadow color and an eyeshadow brush. That’s it.

Take your eyeshadow color and your brush and apply the color on most of your eyelid. Start at your lash line and go until your eyeball ends into its socket. Just wash that color over the lid to give it some nice color. And that’s it. Seriously. Simply swipe some color on and be done. This will give your eyelids some nice color without any fuss. Boom.

Windshield Wiper Method

If you have a little more time or if you want a little more dimension or if you have 2 colors you want to use, then grab a second darker eyeshadow color. After you do the wash method, take the larger end of your brush and apply the darker eyeshadow color right where your eyeball ends and your bone begins. Right in that socket. Simply take the brush and use a windshield wiping motion back and forth to add dimension.

The more your swipe, the more blended it will be. Keep doing it and adding color until you’ve achieved the look you want.

Crease Method

This method is a little more involved, but still totally doable! Take a medium shade and apply it as the wash method all over your eyelid. Then take a little dark shade and apply it in and above your crease. If you want more definition, take a dark shade and apply it in a sideways v shape in the outer corner of your eye and blend it into the crease. Top the look off with a light color under your brow and on the inner corner of your eye. 

Ombre Method

This is the coolest eyeshadow method because it looks like you’ve spend a ton of time but it is so stinkin easy! You need 4 colors, ranging in dark to light. Apply the darkest color on the outer part of your eye.  Apply a medium color on the middle of your eye. Apply a light medium color on the inner part of your eye. Then blend, blend, blend! Top your look off with a light color under your brow and on the inner corner of your eye. Super easy! 

Learning how to apply eyeshadow takes practice, but don’t let that discourage you. Even professional makeup artists started as beginners once. The more you practice blending, placement, and working with colors that flatter your eyes and skin tone, the easier it becomes. And honestly, simple usually looks the most beautiful…especially on mature skin.

Remember, makeup is meant to enhance your features, not hide them. You don’t need complicated techniques or dozens of products to create a soft, flattering eye look. A few good shades, gentle blending, and confidence in your application can go a long way.

And most importantly? Have fun with it. Makeup should feel creative, empowering, and enjoyable…not stressful.

Complementary Colors

Let’s take it back to elementary school, shall we? In art class, we learned about the color wheel. Colors across from each other on the color wheel are called complementary colors. That means that they pair well together. So, if you have hazel eyes, (either brownish or greenish) the complementary color to green is purple. When searching for eyeshadows that will help those hazel eyes pop, you want to reach for purples, bronzes, golds, and even oranges. Those colors will pair well with your hazel eyes. How to Get the Look

After you’ve got your eyeshadow colors (Rome, Mama, On Wednesdays, and Oak), follow these steps:

• Take the fluffy end of your Eyeshadow Brush and brush Mama over your entire eyelid for a nice natural base layer.
• Then take On Wednesdays and wipe the color in the entire crease of your lid with a windshield wiping motion. Wipe it back and forth, making sure to blend well.
• With the smaller end of your brush, take Oak and create a V shape in the outer edge of your lid. You can flip over your brush and use the fluffy end to blend.
• Top the look off by applying Rome on the brow bone area and inner corner of your lid.

Steps to Prep Your Face for Makeup

Before you apply your makeup, it’s important to follow a few steps:

• Have a good skincare routine
• Shave your face
• Exfoliate
• Protect, moisturize, prime

Have a Good Skincare Routine

The most important thing you can do to prep your face for makeup is have a good skincare routine! Every woman wants that perfect glass skin, right?! When you commit to a good nightly skincare routine, your skin can renew itself while you sleep!

For your morning routine, keep it simple. Cleanse, tone, moisturize. See below for how to combine 3 in 1 on the last step. My very favorite skincare products are simple and all natural. The oil cleanser is gentle on your skin and the toner is soothing and healing (save 10% with this discount code: TDEJOELLEN). My favorite moisturizer is Elta MD or Dime Wonderscreen.

Shave Your Face

As your friend, I feel it’s my duty to let you know that you have a furry face. Yup. You do. But, I still love you! Everyone has some fuzz on their face, whether it’s fine, thick, light, or dark. It’s there. Throw out the notion that shaving your face is only for men. Because it’s not. Contrary to popular belief, shaving your face does not mean that your hair will grow back thicker and darker. That’s a myth. Now, I’m not telling you to go invest in a men’s electric razor or to buy some shaving cream and a good razor to shave your beard. I’m not. But I am suggesting that you make a small investment, and I mean small because they’re only a few dollars, in facial razors. These will change your life!

You simply take your facial razor at a 45 degree angle and shave off that peach fuzz. It’s so easy! So simple! And it gives your face a nice smooth surface. Who wants to look at their face and glance an eyeful of fuzz?? I sure don’t! I want to look feminine. And by simply razor-ing off your peach fuzz, you can!

Shaving your face will not only get rid of the appearance of fuzz but it will help your makeup apply and blend better and it will help your skincare absorb better into your skin. It’s a win win!

If you feel like the facial razor route is just too tedious because you have too much fur, then you can always wax. You can wax your face yourself if you’re brave and confident or you can pay someone to do it for you. You just want to focus your upper lip and jawline/cheek area.

Exfoliate

A crucial step to make your face nice and smooth is exfoliation! I can’t preach the power of exfoliation enough. It is oh so necessary for a smooth and texture free face. You can buy a great exfoliator or you can make a simple homemade recipe. The key is to make sure that you use an exfoliator that has fine granules so you don’t scratch your skin. Exfoliating should be helpful, not harmful. We want to slough off the dead skin cells, the product buildup, the dirt and grim. And a nice fine product will do just that. Simply apply the solution to your face and rub in nice circular motions to clean the area well. Only do this once to twice a week so you don’t overstimulate or hurt your sensitive skin. You will feel like a new woman!

There are a ton of exfoliators on the market. Some are great and some aren’t so great. Here are my top 4 tried and true exfoliators that I use and love:

• Daily Essential Co Exfoliant– This one is by far my very favorite!! It’s a plant based exfoliant. It has salicylic acid and jojoba oil beads that leave your skin so soft! It’s so gentle that it can be used daily. Since I’ve been using this in my skin care routine, my skin has never been so smooth and healthy! Protect, Moisturize, Prime

Once you have cleansed your face and have made it nice and smooth, it’s important to protect it. You may have been told that you need to apply sunscreen, moisturizer, and primer every day. But applying that many products on your face before you apply your makeup will just add to the oils and cakey-ness of your face. My motto is less is more! • What contour is best? Cream contour is easy to work with. It applies and blends well into the skin, giving a natural appearance.

What is Contour?

Contour is a makeup product that you use to add shape, shadow, and dimension to your face.

Most women’s makeup routine consist of putting a layer of foundation all over their face to even out their skin tone, add some blush, maybe some bronzer, dash some eye makeup on and call it good. And it is good. But, don’t you want to look great?!

You see, when you put one layer of foundation on your face, you’re getting rid of the shadows, the dimension, the shape of your face! You’re putting one flat finish on and calling it good. But a flat face looks lifeless. We don’t want that! We want to look feminine, beautiful, chiseled, alive, radiant! And contouring does that for you! Contouring brings back the shape and dimension. It gives your face life!

This is a common question! If you’ve ever wondered what’s the difference between contour and bronzer, you’re not alone! Contour is an ashy brown that adds shadow to your face. Bronzer is a warm brown that adds a sun-kissed glow to your face. Contour gives your face shape, shadow, and dimension. It helps chisel your cheekbones. Whereas bronzer will give you a tanned look.

Contouring Step by Step

Contrary to popular belief, contouring is for the everyday woman! Contouring is not just for actresses, models, and makeup artists. It’s for you. Yup….you! And when you have the right products and tools, you can easily master the contouring process in your little ol’ bathroom or car or office or gym….wherever you choose to put on your face. It’s that easy. Here’s how to contour….a step by step process so you can learn the tricks of the trade and feel extra confident in your skin!

What You Need to Contour

To contour properly, you will need a few things. You will need: contour, a brush, a makeup sponge. That’s it! But let’s quickly chat about what kind of contour you need… Contouring is meant to create shadow. So you want an ashy tone brown…not an orangey tone that makes you look fake. Find the best Seint contours to get the look. Take a look at the contour swatches to get a good idea of how the shades look in real life.

For brushes, you want one that will follow the curves of your face nicely. Any of these brushes are great for contouring: (the Detail Brush is my personal fave!)

Where to Contour

Now let’s get to the fun part! Once you have your proper tools, let’s contour! Like I said before, you want to bring those shadows and dimension back to your face after applying your foundation. You want to focus on applying contour to your cheekbones, your jawline, along your forehead near your hairline, and along the sides of your nose.

Blend, Blend, Blend!

Once you apply your contour in the right places, make sure to blend! You want to look as natural as possible so blending is key! Blend with your brush first and then go back and blend for a flawless finish with your makeup sponge. To use your makeup sponge properly, run it under water and get it to double in size. Then squeeze all the excess water out until it is just slightly damp. Then dab, pat, stipple the sponge all over your face to pick up any excess makeup lines. And that’s it!

How to Get the Summer Eyeshadow Look

To get this easy breezy summer eyeshadow look, you will only need: Stardust, Crush, and Sabrina and the Eyeshadow Brush.

• Take Stardust and apply it to your eyelid with the smaller end of your brush. The smaller end can help you get a good amount of color right where you want it. Because of its dense side, it can apply more color directly. Make sure to get a good layer of that shimmery shade on your lid.
• Then take Crush and swipe it into your crease using the large end of your brush.
• To add a nice brightening look to your lids,  finish the look off with applying Sabrina under your brow and inner corner of your eye. That’s it!!

This is such an easy way to add some color to your eyelids and make yourself look more put together. You can mix and match different looks with these three shades.
